What to expect? I am taking DS to the GI doctor for dairy issue
Ds just turned 1. He was on nutramigen bc of colic and reflux. We tried to switch him a few times and never did well. I always thought he just liked the nutramigen better. Well we went to switch him to milk and starting to 2oz of milk in his formula for a few days, and then we upped it to 4oz. He seemed perfectly fine. Well we then went to 6oz of milk and he was miserable for 2 days, then he had blood in his stool. We took him to the ped, who is sending us to the pediatric gi doctor. They did test his stool and it did test positive for blood. It wasn’t a lot of blood, but just enough to be noticeable.
The thing that has me , is he eats yogurt, cheese, ice cream and other things in milk and we never had a problem. Just when we went to the 6oz of milk 3-4 times a day. Anyway I am just ramble , can you tell me what to expect when we go there. What will they do. If your DC has something similar what kind of milk are they on?
We also put DS back on formula until we go to the gi dr.

Just
We're dealing with severe milk/soy protein allergy here, and DD is on Nutrmagin.
I've heard that some kids can take it in yogurt, ice cream, cheese, etc, but not straight up.
Good luck!!

Re: What to expect? I am taking DS to the GI doctor for dairy issue
It sounds like he may have a milk sensitivity as opposed to a full blown allergy since it seems like he can have some dairy and not have a reaction. But im no doc so the GI will confirm all of this. It probably has gone undetected because he has been on the nutramigen which is hypoallergenic formula.
The GI also test for soy allergy since he may also have a sensitivity/allergy to soy as many babies who have milk allergy are also allergic to soy. If no soy reaction then they may put him on soy milk.
His early bouts of colic and reflux could have also been related to his milk sensitivity or allergy.
HTH.

Re: What to expect? I am taking DS to the GI doctor for dairy issue
Well I can tell you that my DD is turning one this week and we think she might have a cheese allergy. But dr said this doesn't mean she can't have milk. They are made and processed different. So a child can have a milk allergy and be able to eat cheese or a cheese allergy and be able to have milk. I believe he said on is cultured and one is not?

Re: What to expect? I am taking DS to the GI doctor for dairy issue
SAME EXACT issue here - Yael was on Nutramingen for 6 months because, when I was nursing her, she had blood in her stool, no matter how hard I tried to eliminate dairy from my diet! She was fine on Nutramigen.
I figured she grew out of it around 1 year because she ate cheese/yogurt with NO problem, so I started to transition her from the Nutramigen to whole milk - UNMITIGATED DISASTER! Our GI doctor diagnosed her with a dairy allergy at 6 months, and then a dairy "sensitivity" at 1 year. It's not all that suprising considering I have the same issue - I'm lactose interolant - I can eat yogurt and some cheese with no issue, but anything with cream, like milk, or ice cream, and it hurts like hell.
So, in the end, we transitioned her to soymilk and she's been fine ever since, and I supplement with yogurt and cheese.
At our first meeting with the GI doctor we talked at length about her symptoms and he did an exam and also examined/tested a stool sample with blood in it. We opted not to do the extensive allergy testing because it was fairly obvious from her symptoms it was a dairy allergy and there was no point in putting her through the hell of the invasive allergy testing.
Good luck!
