Both my kids were in high back boosters with regular seat belt at 5. They were over the weight limit of my 5 point harness seat at age 4.

For MOST vehicles the car seat and child can not weigh more then a combined 65 pounds to install with LATCH. The seat IS still allowed to be installed with the seatbelt though.
BUT this has NOTHING to do with keeping a child in a harness or using the seatbelt. Installation is a different subject.
THIS ARTICLE simply states the limits for each car manufacturer and also gives weights of seats.
As for the OP's question- DD1 was 6.5 before she was out of a harness. DS and DD2 will be at least the same.

My DD was 6.5 when we changed her but my DS we just had to change him at 4.5 because he would no longer fir in the straps. They are completely different body types. She I'd petite and he is very tall and all muscle - built like a football player. So I ink it depends on the individual child and how they fit rather than age.

In my car at 5, DS was in a 5 pt, then booster w a back w the belt. In Exdh's car he was in a booster with a belt

Five point harness. He will stay in it until he is too big to fit. I see no reason to rush it. It is safer.
ditto. my son is 4.5 but the size of a 6 year old. he's not complaining so i have no reason to rush him. plus his seat holds 5 pt harness up to 60lbs. then i'll switch to booster up to 100lbs

DD will be 6 in June and wigs 32 lbs. She is in a 5 pt. harness and will obviously stay there for a while. We have the Britax Pioneer 70 the the upper limits for the straps are quite high. Even if she it 40 lbs. I'd keep her in the harness longer, as long as the straps still worked.
