What would you have done if a waiter did this to you??

DH and I went to a local family restaurant with DS for lunch yesterday. We go to this particular place pretty often and are friendly with most of the wait staff.

We order our drinks and are chatting away... DS has a few toys on the table but takes the box with sugar,sweet n low, etc. In it, dumps it out and counts how many packets there are as he puts them back into the container. ( right now he is obsessed with counting everything he can get his hands on!)

Our waiter came back to take our orders just as DS was putting one of the last packets back into the box.

The waiter yanks it off the table and goes " NO I DON'T THINK SO" we were SO puzzled that it didn't even sink in right away. DS burst out in tears crying for the box back. DH asked the waiter " What are you doing can I please have that back?"

The waiter goes to DH " Why so your son can play with it?"

DH said " Yes he is just counting them and putting them back he is not opening them or damaging them in any way"

Waiter says " Sorry I can't do it"

WTH??

Now DH is mad and says " Listen please just give it back to me, my son was not damaging them but if you want I will leave extra $$ on the table to replace the sugar if you want.

The waiter still refused to give it back ( All the while DS who had been in a GREAT mood all day was hysterical crying begging for the thing back)

He finally gave it back and gave us the most mean dirty look I have ever seen!!! Then asked us " So are you ordering or not??"

DH said ummm no!! I want to speak to the manager and we want a new waiter.

Are we nuts are is this unexceptable???
What is wrong with people?

eta: He does this everytime we go there and no other waiter has ever said anything about it to us.

Wow....what a jerk!!! You're not nuts at all...completely unacceptable! That guy should be fired!

I would have spoke to management or just left... He must have had a bug up his rear end or something! That was unacceptable treatment to your family

as a former waitres i can tell you that 99% of the children who reach for the sugar packets ususally either dump them on the floor or open them and dump them on the floor. And their parents don't tell them to stop!!!! It is infuriating.

Not that I am defending the waiter, he shouldnt have taken them away or said anything, but normally the kids don't play nice with those!!

I think you did the absolute right thing. As a matter of fact, I would have asked for the manager and after I spoke to him/her I would have left and never gone back.

OMG, I would be LIVID!! I would have walked out.

I asked my dh what he would of done and he said that after asking him for the sugar container back 2 times, the third time he would have taken it away and humiliated the waiter.

that is crazy, even if he opened every last package, SO WHAT? He is a child, that waiter should have been fired on the spot...you would think it was his personal sugar....ugh, I would have been livid !!!

I would have done the same thing your husband did. He handled it perfectly.

My DH probably would have told the guy to put it back or he would lay him out. He's normally a calm guy but if someone just made our kids cry for no reason at all, he'd be furious.

What did the manager say?

eta. Where is this so we can all bring our kids to count sugar packets?

My husband would of went off as would I. how dare he!! What an @sshole!!! There is no reason for that. It's sugar packs for God sake. Not gold! Patrick plays with them all the time!

I would have been so pi$$ed that I would have left and probably never go back!

My DD does this all the time and no one ever says anything.

Thanks everyone!! This was at Boulder Creek at lunchtime on a Sat. afternoon.

Not sure exactly what the manager said .. DH got up and walked away to talk to him while I stayed with DS. I was realy upset and didn't want to talk about it yet. All I know it a new waitress came out asap.
