I haven't gotten involved in this thread but I have read the replies. The OP had to do with salaries of the school superintendents. Are many of them over paid? Absolutely. But their salary is directly related to the area in which they work (the school district). A superintedent in an upper/middle class district makes more than a middle class district. That is the way it is. The superintendent of schools wears many hats and works many many hours attempting to improve the educational environment in the district. Many of the schools on LI are in poor shape due to their age and improvements need to be made, the superintendent has to figure out how that will be done and that is just one responsibility of his/her job.

This thread isn't speaking about teachers so I won't even address some of those issues presented but I think that everyone gets a little defensive about his/her job. It is human nature.

I just wanted to add that our Superintendent is the 3rd highest paid on the list. I live in PORT JEFFERSON STATION. Comsewogue SD. It is an decent school but we are NOT in an upper middle class area. Read the home board and you will hear people bashing my town ALL the time.

I guess my four Teacher friends are the only ones around that think they made a great choice to be a teacher and feel they are compensated well and have good hours. I have not heard ONE person in this entire thread say ANYTHING bad about teachers. And the initial thread even started about Super's. I am sorry you chose to work so far from your home, I totally understand. DH commutes 4 1/2 hours everyday too. We all made our choicesChat Icon

Not at all. I've stayed quiet on this thread because I'm a teacher on LI, I'm very well paid for what I do and I truly enjoy it. Do I love every aspect of it? Heck No!!! Are there days when I question the choice to become a teacher? Yes! But I think that's true of any profession. And it usually has nothing to do with the actual teaching....it's usually because of some BS that comes along with the job.

I know I'm paid well, I know I get great vacations, and I know I'm lucky. But I also know I work really hard for all of that. And it can be frustrating when people constantly remind you of all of the perks without ever making reference to the hard work involved.Chat Icon

I want to know how and why this thread turned into bashing teacher's salaries when it was about superintendents?
I'm a teacher. I've worked very hard to get tenure, still owe $20,000 in loans, and have laid out $5000 to take classes to get my salary to where it is.
I'm curious how come you never here anything about Suffolk County cops who make an incredible salary as well, and it's tax payers $. Is it b/c we have summers off? My only response to people who start complaining about teacher salaries is, "you should have became a teacher."

If you read Newday then you will know that Suffolk Police take ALOT of heat for their pay. One of DH and I's closest friends is a suffolk cop and we can not go to a social gathering where his salary doesn't come up. He catches ALOT of $hit but knows it comes with the territory. He knows how lucky he is to have that job.

I agree--my DH is in accounting, and needs to take courses to remain up to date on all of the laws/expectations; when I worked on Wall Street I needed my certifications renewed at my own expense, and in my current position I shelled out over $50,000 of my own money for a doctorate that was required. Chat Icon And I need to publish papers and do research outside of my job to continue being able to teach college courses.

I agree with this. There are so many fields in which people have to pay for their continuing education courses. The medical field is another one of those.

That is a fair point. I did not realize that lawyers and accountants needed to pay for their own continuing education. I was thinking more corporate.

I hear LI teachers say they deserve the salary so they can live on LI...yet NYC teachers and NYC cops manage to live quite comfortably on LI as well.

I started in NYC and would have loved to make that school (Cardozo HS) my career school. I loved the students, I loved the faculty, I loved every inch of that school.

I could not afford to be a NYC teacher. At the time I left I made 37K. I was taking out student loans to pay for my rent (and I lived with a roommate!)

I always tell DH, if he asked me to marry him one year earlier - I would have stayed there forever, I just couldn't afford to. I received a 40% raise by coming out to the 'burbs.

My two good friends there also left for higher paying suburbs schools. We are all scholar teachers at our current positions and it's the city's loss for their poor salary schedule = Brain Drain.

Well there are exceptions to everything. Just like there are exceptions to the teachers having a "sweet deal" as well.

I don't have a problem with the salaries per-say. I have a problem with the number of school districts and the number of superintendents making these salaries. We need to consolidate SDs so that one superintendent oversees more schools. Cutting down on the number of school administrators is what is needed.

In theory, it's a great idea- till you try to consolidate Merrick and Roosevelt, etc,- then all hell will break loose. I have a feeling that many people would prefer to keep their crazy taxes than have their good district combined with one that isn't.

you can "calm" YOURSELF. When you are required to have a Bachelors, a Masters, and then continue to PAY FOR professional development to maintain a certification, you deserve what you make and NYC teachers do NOT make enough to cover those costs.

And as far as our salaries being public information, it IS an invasion of our privacy and I do NOT care if you think your tax dollars pay my salary.

Just for your information, there are other professions that DO require continuing education that is ALSO paid out of pocket.

Needing a Master Degree and certification and all the extra credits is also needed in other jobs, not just teaching.

Why are some people so self absorbed that they don't think other people could be just as qualified and needing the same requirements of education and credits yet they get a lot less $$$?

Bottom line, EVERYONE think they deserve a higher income.

And yes, the incomes are paid through taxes so they are public records. The President of the USA's income is public.

Let's just say that if the income, benefits and time off were that bad well I don't think it would be that appealing to be a teacher. So people do go to teaching because there are perks. Let's not make it a job worst than it is. Yes, it's not for everyone! But neither in working in customer service when some lunatic screams at you that you sent them the wrong toaster and Aunt Margaret won't have the best toast tomorrow morning.

I can't think of a much more demanding and important job than teaching kindergarten. That is the groundwork of all future education and teaches some of the most important life skills. That teacher must foster a caring, positive and educational environment to say nothing of the patience and preparation necessary.

I teach at the secondary level and have great admiration and respect for all teachers, but marvel at those who teach those early grades.

It's getting tiresome that teaching seems to be the one whose salaries get bashed and have to be defended.

First, I wasn't directing my comments at you but at the person who told me to "calm myself". I understand on a public forum any person can reply, but if you look at the conversation between myself and that person you will see why I was so angry.

Second, I NEVER stated that other jobs don't need to do what we do. I/ am far from a self-absorbed person. In fact anybody who knows me off of this website would tell you I put others thoughts/opinions/needs first to a fault! However, no other job is looked down upon more or more criticized than teachers. People always say teachers get too defensive or jumpy when this topic comes up. YES, we do because the general public makes it that way for us.

Third, I LOVE MY JOB. I would not trade it for anything in the world. I do not make anything close to the numbers you see listed on that website and I never will if I remain in the city. I did not go into this job for the so called perks, I went into this field because it combines the two things I happen to love most: children and literature. I work my butt off and I am not saying that others outside of this field do not, but no other field that I can think of takes more abuse than us. We are first to blame for all of the problems of the world and the last to praise when our children succeed or do wonderful things. I do not expect daily thanks or applause. I save that for people like my husband and other members of the armed forces who keep us all free, but to be left alone by the public who in large part have no idea about what we do every single day.

Teachers do NOT, in general, go around bashing other careers and yet it seems as if everybody thinks it is okay to bash us.

I was quoting you on the comment that you had to pay for your education and for more credits.

This is not just for teachers. Lots of professions including mine require for continuing education. It was $$$$ this year for me.

The comment on being self absorbed was a general comment. We all think that we deserve x y z because we have x y z degree or because our job is so important. The point is, all jobs are important or they would not exist in the 1st place.

Let's just say that since people are paying taxes to pay teachers' salary it will create heated discussions. The taxes on LI are insane. Tax payers want to know why they must have such income. Such is life!!! I am sure lots of posters with political views feel the same about politicians. Some want less taxes, less Government, etc... Well, that's the same argument. Bottom line, since taxes on LI are so high, this is becoming a very sour subject. Also because people are not getting raises, still losing their jobs, yet they are frustrated that they still pay a lot of taxes and some people are making 6 figures. If someone does not understand that, then they are out of touch with reality.

Sometimes the justification for the income is not well taken by others. Degrees (lots of other professions need similar degrees), hours (lot of people work way over 40 hours and not paid for OT), dealing with kids (lot of professions have to deal with BS, customers, etc...). I don't know if you ever worked with pi$$ed off customers all day in a customer relationship job (that's not picnic!!!).

See, I never think I earn too much money. I know some people think I do (I have been told!!!). But I am also not paid by tax payers.Chat Icon

I just don't get it.

I love healthy debates, I do, and yes, sometimes I feel they are paid very high, but whatever, I am not a teacher. I have no desire to be and I have no idea how hard it is or isn't.

I could have been a teacher. I still could be, if I wanted the such and such salary.

But, it's like being mad at someone for buying a bag of oranges. You could have bought them..and you still can!

Im much more mad at corruption in politics...and how NY state can be so broke, but the campaign money can be flowin' like a stream.

OK I'm gonna respond just because I can. I think some of the salaries, when I first look at them, are gross. then I read some of the responses from teachers, non teachers, teacher lovers, teacher haters and think about it i think....the sups do a lot of work...work real late, weekends, holidays, make hard decisions. Most deserve the money.

OP didn't ask about teachers, but....as a tax paying citizen that has been threatened, cursed at, yelled at by adults and kids... had poop...pee...blood...vomit to deal with as well as helping kids with seizures, passing out, suicidal AND has been loved, admired, and has inspired while having had an incredible passing rate... teachers deserve EVERY RED CENT THEY EARN. And if they complain they don't get paid enough...then they deserve a raise.

sorry supers shouldn't be paid that much, they're too many of them (assistants, etc). Should be a consolidation within districts then you can earn that much.

The president of the college i work for makes $172,000 (2008) plus he gets to live on campus for free. Um yea he runs a small "district" since we have 6,850 (Fall 2008) students.

As a public employee i do think its fair to have our salaries on public record. We are paid by our own tax dollars and everyone else who pays into the system. We are public servants - we work for the public. I like to know what my boss makes vs what I make and what I do compared to what he/she does.

Re: What would you say is the "average" salary a school superintendant makes on LI

I just want to throw it out there that I recently looked up what teachers make here in NC and it is shockingly lower than what is paid up north. Masters degrees aren't required in NC, but if you have one, there isn't that much of a difference in salary, either. I think it's awful -- they SHOULD be paid MUCH MORE.......

As for superintendents, I have no idea what their job entails specifically, so I'll hold off on giving an opinion on that....

Re: What would you say is the "average" salary a school superintendant makes on LI

A superintendent is a "CEO" of a rather large "firm" that consists of students, teachers, assistants, administrators, school buildings and grounds, numerous budgets, numerous public relation issues, transportation, etc.

They work all year ( as many people outside of education do). They attend board meetings which are at night, are at most school functions including sporting events, plays, musicals, pep rally/homecoming, and other night and weekend events of ALL schools in his/her district.

They are in charge of every aspect of education.

While some of us may think it is an excessive salary, I have to wonder... what are other CEOs making? Is a superintendent's pay that excessive?

They are in charge of the welfare of our children.

I don't think there can be a price on that
