Re: What would you say is the "average" salary a school superintendant makes on LI

The fact is that NY (specifcally NYC and Long Island) has the most demanding curriculums in the country. My students from other states have great difficulty catching up to my native New Yorkers. NY teachers have a much easier time getting a job in other states because it is well known how hard we work and what we are expected to do. If you want to pay teachers less than be prepared to get what you pay for.

BINGO. I was once told I was too smart to be a teacher and I should have been an attorney. Just what everyone wants - stupid teachers because that's all that would be left.

Some of those Superintendent salaries are ridiculous! Yes, their job is stressful and many (but not all) have doctorates. But... so do college professors, and they're not making anywhere near that!

And there are about 130 SD's on LI! No one on LI would ever agree to this, but consolidating districts would be much more cost efficient. We'd have the same # of kids, so the # of teachers would be the same. But do we really need 130 Sup's making 250K+ a year of our tax dollars?

I couldn't agree more. We are one of the few states that have all the seperate districts. It is totally rediculous!!!

I am all for this. I have worked on Long Island and out of state (FL and SC).

I really don't think we need so many sep. districts. Consolidating to county or even area schools would be better for our taxes.

I know Suffolk county is big, so even if we did a Western Suffolk, Central Suffolk and Eastern Suffolk school district, just think of how many high paid people wouldn't exist.

ITA, I have worked on LI as well as MD. I also find at least in my experience, the county system schools had a lot more resources, due to large budgets.

I think $650K seems perfectly reasonable to me! I'm sad that my superintendent doesn't make that- maybe i'll write a letter asking them to raise my taxes so that he/she could Chat Icon Chat Icon

I really dont care what teachers make and would never say that they didn't deserve it. I get that teachers feel attacked and get on the defensive, but i never understand- when this conversation comes up- why teachers go on and on about how hard they work and schooling, etc.

Honestly, many jobs have the same requirements. It's the choice you make.

I just don't understand the endless monologues about the trials and tribulations, because, in all fairness, every profession has them.

This entire discussion is making me SICK.

Instead of complaining that teachers/superintendents/administratorsmake too much money, why aren't we complaining that A.Rod makes 20 MILLION a season to play baseball or TV actors make millions per episode or movie!!!!! Give me a break..... THAT'S a ridiculous salary for a job that has no importance in the world whatsoever....... if athletes or actors stopped working, would it affect our lives in any meaningful way?? not really!! But if teachers, officers, mta workers, or mostly any other profession (public or otherwise) that you are complaining about were to stop working, we couldn't be able to continue to function as society. We are paying the wrong people the big bucks!!!! I see nothing wrong with teachers, administrators, etc. who actually do an IMPORTANT & DIFFICULT job getting compensated for it!!!

I don't care what those in entertainment are paid because its not my tax money paying their salaries.

For example, the money that A-Rod is making comes from ticket prices, etc. ... discretionary money that no one is FORCED to pay because of where they live.

But do you really think if any of these public employees' salaries were lower, the taxes would then be adjusted to be lower? Doubt it! The government would just find some other (worse) way to waste the taxpayers' money. They're good at that!

Perhaps, but I doubt we'll ever know because I doubt the salaries paid on LI will ever change.

I do think there is a correlation between salaries and taxes though -- outside of NY the salaries AND the taxes are significantly lower.

A-MEN!

I totally agree teaching is extremely hard and would never take that away, but try working in a hospital for one day. Highlights of my job: getting cursed at, hit, hit ON, all body fluids on me, one time a patient grabbed a pair of large scissors and tried to kill me with them (literally, scissors over her head exorcist style, ready to plunge into me), i've changed adult diapers, walk with patients with external pacemakers in my hand (their life literally in my hands), had to go into isolation rooms with patients with active Tuberculosis and unidentified mystery illnesses after getting off planes from foreign countries, families who think you have a magic wand and make their loved one walk who hasn't walked in a year, doctors who think your magic wand can make their patient better with one wave. Does it suck? Sometimes HELL YEA! But I chose this. I also have to keep up continuing ed to keep my license current. Just sayin.

That being said, I'd like to share that I taught ADULTS for ONE DAY and went home and collapsed. It was awful. It gave me a new respect for teachers! I can honestly say how shocked I was at how hard it was. I've never taught a class before so maybe it was a learning curve. But I won't do it again.

My brother's gf is a nyc teacher. Until I knew her, I never knew how much take home work there is. Unreal.

* as far as teachers being defensive, i'm actually pretty impressed at the thoughtfulness of this thread in spite of the fact that people don't necessarily agree, but one need only open a newspaper or listen to 10 minutes of 1 of cuomo's speeches to get why. we've been targeted lately. we're taking the fall for all the factors that lead to kids who under-perform when so many of them are out out of our hands, and on top of everything else, people are screaming for our heads in the news over salaries.

i'm no marine. i'm not asking to be honored as a hero or anything. but i pour a lot of myself into my work and i care about kids, so i just don't want to be bullied by the nasty climate of the public debate on education.

Lets just call a spade a spade here. Is teaching an "EASY" job? No, not at all! BUT, it is a pretty sweet deal, between the hours and the insane amout of time off in relation to the pay. C'mon, what other job can you get and make that kind of money for that many work days per year.

this is some recycled old rhetoric that shows no understanding of the work outside of school hours. example: we had off on veterans day, and i spent it grading. that was a work day for me. in addition i'd say i spend about 10-12 hours of my personal time working, whether it's getting in 2 hours early every day to create materials, write lesson plans, grade, answer emails; or maybe it's staying after school to call parents, attend meetings, grade papers, etc. or maybe it's the 5 hours i spent grading essays yesterday (SATURDAY). did i mention grading papers? this is a HUGE time commitment. the time during the day is GO GO GO, so you can't get everything done.

i work basically 6 days a week (at least!), which add up to 40 extra works days--there's my summer vacation. what's left are school breaks like president's week and the holidays, not that much different from the 2-4 weeks that people get from their jobs, except YOU can take it when you WANT and not when the district tells you to. this is why teachers are totally burnt out in june. i always say that this job means working at 150% 10 months a year.

example: i am TTC right now, and i am totally freaked out about how i'm going to deal with time management once a baby comes because i don't want my work to suffer. let's "call a spade a spade:" my time is not my own, so i have to juggle baby and all the extra work outside of the school day. that's scary. that's teaching. please don't use this argument again.

Those who cna bad mouth teachers can just easily say it's so easy, blah blah blah. Unfortunately, they have no intention, EVER, of actually trying to see what a day as a teacher is like, or even a week.

There will always be this friction, but I think the teachers will stop defending themselves if the attacking stops and those who don't teach, I believe will stop complaining about salaries or whatnot if their eyes are opened to the profession.

I appreciate all of you who have tried it out and have been honest about whether you enjoyed it or not and how exhausting/difficult it was! Chat Icon

I dealt with this type of argument with a close friend once. We both have a similar background (same subject area) and she took the private route and I took teaching. One day we got into a discussion about how she feels it's easy for me to teach them the basics of my subject area. Nothing I said seemed to sway this, until one day I brought work home to do from school and she had come over. Being that she has a similar background, I showed her their responses to basic questions and she was floored! Then I explained how I take my students from knowing practically nothing from the subject area to passing their exams all in 10 months. After that, she respects teachers and has admitted that she had never actually seen what we work with at times.

All the griping about one's job is annoying. No one is being forced to work a certain job. There are pros and cons to all jobs. If you don't like what your job has to offer, and can't put up w/the cons, then leave. Yeah its not easy to change careers but it can be done.

There I said it. LOL Chat Icon

C'mon, what other job can you get and make that kind of money for that many work days per year. Lots and lots of jobs require a masters and require you to continue your education(and pay for it yourself).
Everyone made their choice in life and good for you if you chose to be a teacher. It was a smart choice. BUT, please be honest and call a spade a spade, it is a GREAT job with a GREAT salary and amazing hours/time off. Nobody can bash you for being smart and choosing that road. They can only regret not choosing it for themselves.

I commute 4 hours a day to and from my "sweet deal".

On Wednesday I had to call security and pray they got there in time before two kids beat the living sh!t out of each other. (They didn't make it in time)

On Monday an AP came in to my room and told me that besides all my other work I had to do an item analysis on a recent test I had just given and he wanted it by Friday. Sweet....so I got to work on Veteran's day. I had to send my kids to daycare instead of spending the day with them....but that is another post.

My sweet deal allows me to pee only when the bell rings and have lunch at 10am.

My sweet deal has me e-mailing a student all her work because she just had a baby but is capable of going to a really awesome college if she can find the time to do it.

My sweet deal has me praying my kids go to bed early so that I can grade 100+ papers on A Streetcar Named Desire. Most are hand written because my kids can't afford computers at home.

My fellow colleagues and I have to deal with people who have no idea what they are talking about bash what we do and think it is a sweet deal. We have to listen to people in politics who have never stepped foot in a classroom dictate to us what we should and shouldn't be doing. Clearly they know best. SWEET!!!

Yeah.....totally a sweet deal!

ETA: I totally get that other professions all have their own stuff they have to deal with. But I would never ever say they have it easy or a sweet deal because I have never been in their shoes.

I guess my question is, for those of you that think teachers are overpaid, how much do you think is a fair salary for teachers?

Keep in mind that we also live and need to support to a family in Nassau/Suffolk county, just as you do?

I am really just curious because I think there are a few teachers who are making 120,000. But, honestly, it's not the majority. I am just wondering if your opinion is actually a lot closer to the true average salary.

I never realized how much some teachers were making. I guess I am used to those old commercials touting how poorly paid teachers are for the important job they do.

I don't think it's a bad thing that they make good money - they are teaching my children. Good for them.

I guess I'm in the minority.

I'm a teacher and don't mind that supers make 250k+. It's actually a pretty small salary if you think about their real title - CEO.

I don't mind that my salary is public. I'm a great teacher and I get paid accordingly.

DH is IT without one single college credit. not one and will ALWAYS make more than me - even double at times (and he's underpaid - but we accept it, b/c he gets to work from home, gets to go to conferences, plays golf before 9 am, puts our son on the school bus, etc).

postscript: I started at 29K too! and it was a raise from my 23K salary at a publishing company. Publishing employees are probably the lowest paid professionals out there!

Nicrae- my commute is shorter by an hour- but otherwise I deal with pretty much the same things.

I sort of feel like the "teachers complaining/defending themselves" usually comes up in response to "teachers make a lot of money" and "teachers have such a sweet deal". I think if the second type of thread didn't come up, there would be less of the first.

I am a LI teacher and I deserve what I make. I work extremely hard and take home hours of work each night. I also have numerous planning hours every weekend. I have over 115 students that I teach and am responsible for each and every day. I need to contact their parents if they dont do their homework or do poorly on a test. From September to June I cannot read a book for pleasure because I do not have the time. So I deserve my salary. Maybe you should become a teacher and see how difficult it really is, because many people try it and dont make it past their first year. My first year I cried every day.

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I am not a LI teacher but a city one and what you said is my life too. Many of my non-teacher friends dont "get it" that I always have so much to do. They seem to think that I just copy notes from the textbook and put it on the chalk board for the kids to copy (kind of what many of our teachers used to do). That is furthest from the truth. I spend hours planning lessons even with almost 10 years in.

ALso, what other profession REQUIRES you to get a masters degree and additional coursework to maintain certifications. And all of this coursework costs ME money. These college classes arent cheap.

I have friends that have a quarter of the college that I do and make far more than me and dont do work when they get home or on the weekends or vacations like I do. That said, I LOVE what I do and would not do anything different.

Edited to answer original question:
Yes, I do feel that 500 or 600k is alot for some of them. Maybe there should be a cap of some sort. However, there are many districts that have 5 or more assistants. Is there always a need for that especially when when budget cuts happen and its the paras and teachers that are the first to go. On average, 5 teachers can be paid with those salaries. Those 5 teachers mean smaller classes and kids learn more effectivly when there are smaller classes.
