I might be wrong but I don't think they are legally allowed to ask that question.

I would say yes.

If you went through an employment agency, I would also mention it to them, because possible employers cannot use your answer against you, and if you don't get the job, how are you to know being a parent isn't the reason?

They can't..I would ask how it was relevant to the position available?

It is totally illegal to ask but some people ask anyway.

I work for an employment law firm and they are no way allowed to ask you that question (among many others)

They aren't

And my old boss used to have a tricky way around it. She told me she would tell potential employees that the firm provided health insurance for just the employee and if that would bea problem and most people would tell her...

I've been asked and I've said yes mainly b/c I couldn't see lying about it and saying I didn't have a child, KWIM?

I do not allow my personal responsibilities to interfere with my ability to get the job done. I am not sure if you are aware but it is illegal for you to ask me that question..

Thanks I used it on an interview and watched the guys jaw drop to the ground. I actually got a call back for a second interview but declined because I didn't like the hiring manager at all.

The thing is though- then u prob wouldn't get the job because ur calling them out on it or being a know it all and bosses don't like either of those things. Most of us know that these personal questions are illegal but get asked anyway. I think if you really want the job (and it doesn't bother you that you will be working for a place that has the nerve to ask illegal questions) then you should answe honestly. Personally I wouldn't completely rule out a job just b/c they asked- even though it is wrong- but it would make me question the company's ethics, etc. So my answer is I would be honest during the interview but take their practices into consideration if I was offered the position.

I was actually called back for a second interview for this position with the VP of the division. I didn't like the hiring manager or overall athmosphere. I also could not work somewhere where that type of attitude is acceptable.

I personally could not stand by and allow this type of blatant discrimination go on.

I answer honestly even though I know they can't ask that question. The way I see it is that if they don't like the fact that I have a child, then I'm not gonna be happy there because chances are they're not gonna be flexible if necessary. I'd rather make sure I'm happy at the job and that it's family friendly, you know?

I would answer honestly.

I've personally never been asked.

I hired 2 people to work under me recently. I think I asked one guy if he had kids. I was just being friendly though.

Re: What would you say on an interview if someone asled if you had children?

It is illegal. Just as it is illegal for an employer to ask if an employee if she is pregnant. I asked this of an EXCELLENT attorney. My supervisor asked if I was PG before I was ready to come out. I looked her right in the face and said "Im pretty sure you are not allowed to ask me that." Needless to say, she kept quiet because I had them by the balls.

Re: What would you say on an interview if someone asled if you had children?

My answer would be "Why do you ask?" and then I'd listen for their explanation, and then explain that they are legally not allowed to inquire about that and that there are no outside responsibilities of any kind that would interfere with me completing my job duties.

I agree.

I have never been asked - but in the event that I am asked when I look for work - I would answer honestly and it would have to be in the context of a friendly conversation.....

Re: What would you say on an interview if someone asled if you had children?

tough - I guess I would answer it honestly, but that it has no bearing on my ability to work.

Maybe even lighten the mood by saying you must really like me that you are asking me these personal questions.

I only had one experience. I was 9 months pregnant. I told them that I knew they weren't allowed to ask me, so I will be the one to volunteer the information and told them my plans (I already had a son in daycare, the job would have begun at 12 weeks pp (school position), etc) and I got the job.

sucks to be put in that situation. I still don't think men fully get how much women are discriminated against.
