What's the deal with protein bars?
Are they good for you? best before/after a workout? I have been eating the Balance Bars either in place of lunch or as a mid day snack and actually love them. Just want to make sure I'm not doing more harm than good!

Personally I feel they are glorified candy bars.

I agree to an extent. It depends on the ingredients. I eat Lara Bars sometimes. Most of them just have a few ingredients-for example, Peanut Butter Cookie flavor is just dates, peanuts and salt. But they don't have a ton of protein-7 grams per bar.

Agreed--I still love them though. I eat Zone bars but don't necessarily use them in the diet sense--I eat one for breakfast if I have a short run/race on the weekend (I need more fuel for longer runs) and will eat them in the evening if I'm not eating dinner until after 10pm.

Re: What's the deal with protein bars?
i make my own (have a batch cooking right now actually!) here's the recipe:
3 bananas 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce 1/4 cup unsweetened almond milk 1 tblp honey 2 tblp walnuts 4 scoops protein powder (watch which brand you buy - you don't want a super high cal one) cinnamon (optional - tastes good w/ vanilla protein)
mush the bananas up then add all other ingredients. mix and pour into pan. bake at 350 for 15-20 minutes.
yummmm
Eta I left out a key ingredient! 1 1/2 cups oats

Thanks so much for posting. Unfortunately I won't be able to use it because I am allergic to apples and nuts I feel like nuts can be such an important part of a low card diet so it is frustrating! The Balance bars were one of few that have no nuts.

These sound delish! I am definitely going to make these. Can I ask how many it makes, how you store them and how long they last?

Re: What's the deal with protein bars?
Here's my recipe! They come out kinda like brownies!
Cooking oil spray ½ cup quick oats ½ cup skim milk 1 cup Egg Whites ½ tablespoon vanilla extract 2 scoop whey protein powder stevia to taste ¼ cup ground flaxseed 2 tablespoons whole wheat flour 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder (if I make vanilla flavored, I omit this) ¾ teaspoon baking powder 1/8 teaspoon salt
Preheat oven to 350°F. Spray an 8×8? pan with cooking oil spray. In a microwave safe bowl, combine oats and milk; cook for 60 seconds. Stir and allow to cool; mix in egg whites and vanilla. In a large mixing bowl, combine the whey protein, stevia, flaxseed, flour, cocoa, baking powder, and salt. Add oatmeal mixture to dry ingredients; mix just until everything is moist. Spread batter in pan.
Bake for 10 minutes; allow to cool completely before cutting. I usually make 9 bars

This sounds easy enough! Thanks! Quickly-What kind of protein powder do you use and where can I buy the flaxseed?

they make about 12 servings and last awhile if you keep them in the fridge. they won't rise in the oven so just be careful that you don't make them too thick. I use a regular cake pan and cover the entire thing with it.
Also don't forget the oats if you make them - I left that out initially by mistake.
I added blueberries to batch i just made and it came out really, really good.

I buy my ground flaxseed at whole foods. I have used About Time Whey protein (its all natural and has 0 carbs/fat) as well as The Diet Doc Protein blend (which is YUMMO!)
