Re: What's the plan for no school?
Posted by SLPRunner I really like that plan and like that your school district is communicating the plan with you even if the state has not yet approved it.
Here’s what confuses me. Many districts have made public their plans. Don’t they need state approval before implementing?
I am on two district reopening committees, where I work and where my kids attend. Neither have not yet published our plans for this reason. There’s a great deal of work going on behind the scenes, planning in school, remote and hybrid scenarios, following NYSED guidelines, etc.
I wouldn’t be happy if I made child care/transportation plans and found our district plans weren’t approved and had to be amended...

My district has been communicating their plans for weeks. Everyone is aware that nothing is approved or set in stone. They've been responsive to questions and concerns from the community rather than just a few committees which I think is great. The plans have evolved over the last month as guidelines have continued to come out and as they've gotten feedback from the community. I'm glad they've been open about things even though everything could change again overnight.

Re: What's the plan for no school?
Our district is going 2-3 days a week in person and 2-3 days remote. I am happy with that but it seems to majority of people are pissed about it. I can't see any other way though honestly. Safety is more important than 'daycare'.

What's the plan for no school?
My district is doing half day in person, half day virtual.
So parents will spend half the day doing remote learning with their kids and the other half waiting on a drop off/pick up line. They're in school for 2 hours.

Where do the kids go on the days they're not in school if "daycare" isn't an option?

Re: What's the plan for no school?
Our district is small so in-person learning will be at 50% capacity, that is about 7'ish kids in the classroom at any one time. Grades will be split into 2 groups according to last name, half will go on Mon/Tues and half will go on Thurs/Fri with Wednesday as a partial remote learning day. Schools will be empty every Wednesday to allow for full disinfecting of schools. Grades K and 1st will be in school 4 days a week, they are working to get 2nd grade in there 4 days as a week as well. They feel it's critical for the younger ones to have as much in-person instruction as possible, I agree.
Desks will be social distanced, no masks during learning and every student will be given a Chromebook to aid in remote learning. Teachers will be wearing masks all day. They have installed picnic tables all around so that kids can have outdoor learning, activities and lunch. All classrooms will have sanitizer and custodial staff will be cleaning high touch areas throughout the day. No assemblies, visitors into the school, after school activities or sports through September, possibly longer depending on the situation. Specials will be conducted within the classroom.
Buses will run at 50% capacity, socially distanced and masks must be worn. Windows open on the bus for ventilation. School is prepared to go straight into full time in-person learning should it be safe to do so. At any point, you can pull out of hybrid in-person learning for full remote learning.
For working parents, they are coordinating with the local YMCA to offer before and after care.
Because the district is so small and we have had so few cases of COVID where I live I feel more confident sending my kids back to school. I think they did a good job of planning this out and putting into effect multiple safety measures.
ETA - In-person learning days will be on a full day, regular schedule. No early dismissals or shortened days.

To another "daycare". Where they don't learn. is that any safer?

But this has to be given the green light by Cuomo first, right?

Your "crazy" is my sensical. This is why parents should have school choice to do what they want and think is best for their children. The system we have clearly isn't working. The money should follow the child.

Cuomo has to green light every plan but many think that is just a formality. All the superintendents had to sign a form saying they are adhering to all guidelines so I'm assuming that is all he is looking at. All Cuomo is doing is saying that the numbers are still low and schools can open.

I mean crazy is the sense that I'm surprised they had the balls to do it. I'm all for all in teaching.

If she is in NY yep and that would be awesome to me. My kid needs to go back full time to get a full education.

For all students? How can they achieve all the guidelines put forth by the DOH? My district is full time for 1-5, K is every other day and 6-12 is hybrid. That’s with having a 100% virtual option that 30% of parents are going to do.

As a parent of a 6-12 student I don’t find that fair. I get the childcare situation for the younger kids but the older kids need in school teaching too.

They can social distance in the classroom and they want the secondary students to wear masks full day. K-6 they can fully socially distance all students in the classroom (18 kids per class) and only need to wear mask when they are not at their desks. They are not providing a virtual option as of yet.

What has the response been in your community to this?
Our district is proposing the same as I’ve been reading here, and people are either really upset that it’s not full time in person for upper grades, or they are upset that there isn’t an online option for those who don’t want to feel like their children are guinea pigs.
Our community is clearly divided and it’s certainly 100% based on political leanings.

Older students are getting in person teaching. Maybe not every day but they are having regular contact with their teacher. There is not enough space to meet DOH guidelines having them come in every day.
At my school, homeless students, EL students and students with IEPS and 504s will attend every day. Schools are doing the best they can with the current situation.

What's the plan for no school?
My district is planning full day in person for K-6. It's a K-6 district and my son is going into 1st so I don't really know what the middle and high school is doing. Desks will have plexiglass dividers and students have to wear masks. Im so happy my son will be able to go to school every day. Yes it won't be the same but I think it'll be as good as it can be while being safe.

I don’t think that’s a fair assumption in the least. My political leaning and Covid leaning are stark opposites.
Our district is full time k-8 with social distancing, plexiglass shields, and everyone (including k) wearing masks. 9-12 will have five days in school, rotating half days. A days they’ll attend periods 1-4 in the am, B days periods 5-8 in the afternoons. There will be approximately 1.5 hours in between 4th and 5th period to clean/clear out morning students/accept afternoon students. However, they will be expected to log in virtually to the remaining periods from home (and attendance will be taken). Our school is now also providing devices to all students k-12. We were already on track to do so, but it will now be done a few years in advance.

I believe your statement and I don’t mean it’s happening nationally, but I was simply referencing what I am experiencing in my community with social media.

I would say the majority is happy. There is a decent size group that wants a remote learning option because they will not go to school full time. It is definitely along political lines.

What's the plan for no school?
My circle consists almost exclusively of left leaning, progressive, dual income families, the majority of whom work in science and medicine.
We all want our kids in school.
I think the dual income aspect (not politics) is most predictive of covid response as it relates to school.

I really don't understand what politics has to do with feeling comfortable about having your child in school or not.

It really doesn't, as everyone has there own opinions on whether or not in person school fits for their family but since I was asked, there is a clear political leaning of the "loudest" supporters of being fully in school and those who want to be fully remote.
