What's the point of starting internals at 35 weeks?
My Dr. said we will start internals at my next appt...I will be 35.5 weeks. What's the point? I mean, even if I am dilated and/or effaced, what does that really mean? From what I've read women walk around dilated for weeks without going into labor. Why do Dr's start internals so early?

I dont know why they do this? It really means nothing. I have been 1cm for weeks now, and still nothing.

Re: What's the point of starting internals at 35 weeks?
I started at 35 weeks, I guess just to see if you ARE dilated and perhaps will be going onto labor soon. 2cm is nothing but what is you are 4cm at 35 weeks?? They probably need to keep a closer eye on your progression then I would guess.
BTW, I've had 2 internals so far and they haven't bothered me in the least.

Re: What's the point of starting internals at 35 weeks?
my best guess to answer your original question is that they perform your strep b test and figure while they've got your legs up in the air...
all my dr. has done so far at my last 2 appts. is confirm what i knew, the head is down and quite low. she hasn't even checked for dilation or effacement. and no, it isn't "pleasant" at all. i could live without "internals" and be just fine! but it doesn't hurt anymore than a pap smear!

Re: What's the point of starting internals at 35 weeks?
They also dont want you to be too far dilated with no progress for too long due to the risk of infection.

I disagree too....
I have had many pap smears, colposcopy's, cervical biopsies, IUI's, 4x a week Vaginal sonos and IVF and none of them bothered me one bit...
I scream at internals on the other hand. No one ever prepared me for them hurting. Fast yes....but to me they hurt like Hell....

I have had them since 28 weeks (sometimes more than once a week...and last week at the hospital I had 2, one right after the other) and they were not bad. Dont worry!

this is the best way for me to put it:
you know how it kind of hurts if you aren't turned on enough to have sex yet? well, they just kind of go in to check and it's a little traumatic to your vagina i suppose...not like they are going to bring out the KY!

stop it....Its not like your gonna be crying....And its good practice for labor...LMAO
I dont know, it for me hurts...Its just not fun, but DONT get yourself crazy worrying about it either..
Look how many girls on the thread said it didnt bother them....
You know I cant help my honesty.....But I also dont think my experience will be everyones either. I just remember not being prepared for it to hurt and would have liked someone to tell me. LOL
Also I had one int he hospital 3 weeks ago that felt like nothing....Its usually the very last few ( like when your in labor already) that hurt the worst, and at that point, everything hurts so who cares ( ok, Im gonna shut up now) ...

You are far from a drama queen. It's just another one of those things that I will worry about until I actually go through it. The worst part for me is the not knowing.

Mine hurt pretty badly too- though my doctor did start stripping my membranes during the last one. But they are over pretty quick.

Re: What's the point of starting internals at 35 weeks?
Silly Q, but what exactly is done during an internal? They "go in" & check for effacement & dilation using their hand?

Re: What's the point of starting internals at 35 weeks?
I had an internal last week for the first time and it didn't hurt a bit. He just stuck a finger in to see what was going on, said he felt the head (that's weird) and said I'm not dilated at all. Not even really all that uncomfortable once you get past the whole man-other-than-my-husband-sticking-his-finger-you-knowwhere thing!

Re: What's the point of starting internals at 35 weeks?
I had my first internal today- it was uncomfortable, but bearable. I am 1cm dialated which means absolutely nothing.....
ETA: And I only gained HALF a pound. Considering the amount I gained throughout my 2nd trimester, I am thrilled with my third trimester gains.....
