What's your feeling on age recommendations for toys?
Are they true? Like, should I not bother with something that says 18 months and up for a 10 month old?

I use my judgement. I don't think they are always accurate. Even some board books have ages 3 and up on them. Its silly.

I just make sure to look for any small parts. If there arent any, we try it. Worst comes to worst, you save it for a few months.

same here. I have been buying toys for my girls that say 3+ on them since they were 1. I just take away and small choke-able pieces.

I use them as guidelines and use my own judgement. DD has a ton of toys that are 3+ and she is only 19 months. I just make sure there are no small parts.

I use my judgement, though 3 and up can mean there is a choking hazard of some sort. If I look at the toy carefully and see nothing he can choke on, and I think he will like it, I buy it.

Re: What's your feeling on age recommendations for toys?
it really depended on the item... for example the fp xylaphone is 18 months and up but ds has been using it since he was 6 months old.. i think it is 18 months because it can be towed while they walk, but he realllly loves playing music
also ds's favorite toys are the hess trucks... we just watch hm while he plays with them because they are 3 years and up

Re: What's your feeling on age recommendations for toys?
There are age recommendations for things like choking hazards, and those I always, always went with. Other age recommendations almost never applied to Ava, especially when she was a baby. She was bored by toys for her own age. As far as now, I just judge it on a case by case basis. Some stuff truly is too difficult for her to understand, like games or intricate toys, but for the most part, she'll play with things for a 6 or 7 year old, just as easily as with toys for a 3 or 4 year old.

Re: What's your feeling on age recommendations for toys?
To add in conjunction with PP... while the age could be mostly for choking hazard, it is also for development on some toys. Use your own judgement and watch DC with the toy/game. Everyone wants their child to advance quickly but if a toy is too difficult for them to figure out and frustrates them, it could not be a good thing for their development. Children learn by "getting it right" and succeeding so they should be able to "work" it without getting frustrated.
