What's your milk choice & why?
I have no allergies, so that's not a concern. I'm looking at it more for nutrition.
I'm hearing so much about Almond milk.

Re: What's your milk choice & why?
I use unsweetened almond milk often, because I don't love the taste of milk (never really liked it). So prefer to use almond milk for things like cereal or smoothies. And it is low-calorie (and for someone who was going vegan or needed to avoid dairy for health reasons, it is a great choice).
But I don't think it has all of the same benefits as dairy milk... for example, it doesn't have as much calcium. And it doesn't work as well in a lot of recipes... it is thinner than dairy milk. Also, I am doing WW and almond milk doesn't count as a dairy serving. So I usually use Skim Plus (fat-free) milk in my coffee (to make lattes) or in recipes.
I also usually keep organic 1% or 2% in the house for my DS, so sometimes use that for cooking/recipes.

Almond milk. I never drink it, just use it in cooking/baking and occasionally with cereal. I hate soy

Re: What's your milk choice & why?
Almond milk. I use unsweetened vanilla and I find that it tastes close enough to regular milk that I can drink it in cereal. I also love it in smoothies. It's low in calories and although it doesnt have as much calcium as whole cows milk, it still has a good amount in it.

I use Almond milk as often as I can but my DD has nut allergies so I can't use it when cooking for her or around her. I usually have it in smoothies or coffee and don't notice it at all.

I use Silk Unsweetened Almond Milk and it claims to have 50% more calcium than dairy skim milk.

Re: What's your milk choice & why?
Ok.....I'm going to give almond a try!
Does it come organic, or matter?
I like skim milk, but like lower calories more! I eat so much yogurt, cheese, dark greens, that I'm not too concerned about calcium. BUT eat cereal daily & would be nice for smoothies too.

It may be fortified with calcium. I think the Silk Soy Milk is.... I usually get the Blue Diamond Almond Breeze almond milk, and I don't think that has a lot of calcium compared with dairy. I just pay attention to that because I like almond milk more and it's sometimes hard to get 2 full servings of dairy in on WW since I can't count the almond milk. I will have to look for the Silk brand.

This. It has more calcium than milk, just not as much protein.

Re: What's your milk choice & why?
I thought almond milk & coconut milk were my best choices until I started reading about all of the harmful addatives it contains. I seriously do not know what to eat or drink anymore. Has anyone found a brand of almond or coconut milk without additives?

I was going to say this. I'm very skeptical of commercial almond milk. First, it is fortified with synthetic vitamins. Synthetic vitamins are not as readily absorbed by the body as are naturally occurring vitamins. Second, unless you know the source of the almonds, they could have been treated with a substance called "ppo." this substance is used in vehicle engines. Third, there are many additives and preservatives in commercial almond milk. One possibly carcinogenic additive is carrageenan. The blue diamond brand uses carrageenan.
So unless you are making your own almond milk with raw almonds (which you would need to source directly from a farmer or from Spain), I'm not sure how healthful almond milk really is.

I'm love homemade & try to limit my family's consumption of processes things....but I also don't realistically have time to make everything.
What do you use?

Re: What's your milk choice & why?
I never knew about the additives in the almond milk, and I do drink Blue Diamond brand. I wasn't choosing it for health, more for taste, but I am definitely going to shy away from it now.

For those worried about carrageenan there is a guide on the Cornocopia institute's website about brands that are carrageenan free. ETA: here is the guide http://www.cornucopia.org/shopping-guide-to-avoiding-organic-foods-with-carrageenan/

Great, thanks!
I bought the Silk brand today, excited to try tomorrow morning. It doesn't have it listed.

I use skim or soy. Instead of drinking almond milk I eat almonds to get the nutritional benefits.

Whole Foods 365 brand organic almond milk has no carageenan. That is what we use. I don't use a ton...just for coffee, cereal and baking.

Re: What's your milk choice & why?
I don't drink much milk-only in my tea and it's organic. If I had access to grass fed raw milk, that would be my first choice. Grass fed pasteurized, non homogenized milk would be my second choice. Homemade almond or coconut milk would fourth third choice.
