I am totally against it. Give it to people who lost jobs or income. Increase unemployment benefits right now or give it to businesses that are struggling.
Unless someone files for unemployment, and not everyone has, there is no way for the government to know if someone had a loss of income. Bear in mind, people might have kept their jobs but took a major pay cut so technically, it's a loss of income.
I don't get the check regardless but I certainly won't begrudge those that could really use this money. We have to do something to keep people afloat and keep the economy churning.
Then why not make it where you have to apply for it. Why does it have to be a rush out. Can’t be that hard to put up a site to have people fill it out a form that says we lost income.
Thier should be no cap limit either. If someone make $250000 a year and they lost income why shouldn’t they get it? Cause That’s too much? What if their lifestyle requires that income and now they don’t have enough. They should be getting a stimulus payment also.
I believe the issue is time. Developing a website, hosting the site, workers to main the website, the application process, etc...all take way too much time. The US Gov. needs to utilize systems that are readily available. The stimulus checks are really a tax credit that is beling advanced so they are using the IRS as a way to distribute the monies. The IRS is also tracking those who are getting the credit. If someone lost income that was over the cap, they still get the stimulus but as a tax credit when they file for the year in which they lost income. The income thresholds are easy-to-implement ceilings. The stimulus checks for individuals are also a VERY small part of this bill. There is only so much manpower to go around hence using the tax filing system already in place.
I don’t think that’s true. If the cap limits is $150000 and you made 165000 this year you are saying they get a tax credit even though they made $1650000 ? If they are then I may be a little more ok with it but I’m pretty sure that’s not the case
No, meaning that if you lost income. So you made 250K in AGI 2019 and when the first stimulus came out - you were over the threshold. So, based on your 2019 tax return you didn't not get the check. But now you file in 2020 and have lost your income so your AGI is now 35k. You are still entitled to the stimulus but now it would be a tax credit. Since one's tax return is backwards looking, it can't account for the change of income from year to year and that is why it would then be a credit if you are eligible.

You still have to be under threshold of 150k. My point is of my family was making $250 K and we lost says 50K in income I’m still not getting the stimulus ans why shouldn’t I? I still lost income?

There has to be a cut off somewhere. I think the income threshold should be lower. Even if areas with a HCOL, a couple with an AGI of 190k is not in need of gov't help.

Re: What’s your take in these stimulus checks?
Here is my other problem with caps on who can get it.
A married couple who makes $150K a year and has no children is different versus a family who has 1 child which is different from a family who has 2 children versus a family who has 3 children and etc.
The less children you have the less financial responsibilities you have.
Same can be said with married couples who have one parent staying home ans 2 working. They most likely aren’t paying for child care while 2 working parents most likely will.
Also on top of all that making $150K in say Kansas (no idea living expenses but for sake of argument say it’s not high) vs Long Island is a lot different since living expenses are much higher here!

I don’t necessarily agree. People may not have children but have family members that they care for, as just one example.
I do agree that cost of living needs could be taken into account.

My point is still valid thought just add the scenario to a married couple with a family member they are taking care of vs a married couple whose only take caring of themselves. The financial obligations are still different

What’s your take in these stimulus checks?
I could always use the extra cash but frankly I dont need it. I'm not hurting financially right now thankfully. I think unemployment needs a revamp and more money should have gone to struggling businesses than these "loans" that they got. What a joke...

That is why there are different filing methods like Head of Household. There are also child credits. You can also itemize and include some of those care costs. All those items would decrease the AGI and would possibly make a family with children eligible while a couple with no children would be not even though their income is the same.

However, because they go by 2019, I don’t get any stimulus. So people who lost income in 2020 and really need it will not get it because they worked and had a good year in 2019. That’s terrible.
I thought that too but BIL is a CPA and he just had us rush him our tax paperwork to file for 2020 ASAP because if we go off 2019 we get nothing but with 2020 we might have a shot due to deductions.
So maybe double check with your tax preparer as nothing is final yet.

Yes they will go off 2020 of you file ASAP. Also you will get a credit for all stimulus payments in the past if you qualify for it in 2020

What’s your take in these stimulus checks?
I think that it was poorly thought out and not executed correctly.
There should have been no income cap. Just because you make over a certain amount does not mean you can't be struggling. It is unfair and discriminatory.
It also should not have been sent out to everyone who met their income criteria. If you are working and did not take a substantial pay cut they you should not be able to receive a check. That way all that money could have increased for the people who really needed it.
I did not receive a check, but we also did not need it. My husband always worked from home and we saw absolutely no change in our income. I told him that if for some reason we did receive one, it would have been donated to the local food pantry. My parents and sister did receive one and it really irked me as neither of them had any income loss.
The government did a piss poor job in handling the financial responsibility of this pandemic. That is republicans and democrats alike. Other countries were giving out weekly/monthly stipends and the US, always claiming they are a super power did crap. I will say that I am proud at how the communities rallied around the food banks to help others out to make sure no one was going hungry but little was done help with the rent/bills/stability of some of the affected families.

It truly stinks for Long Island as 80k / 160k isn’t ‘wealthy’. It’s not fair that a couple making $150k in Oklahoma gets it but a family on Long Island making $175k doesn’t. It’s a broken system.
The extra unemployment irks me too....not motivating many to get jobs. I see tons of help wanted signs all over. Yet people on my social media who are enjoying making more on unemployment are out enjoying beautiful days at port Jeff harbor doing some shopping and lunch. Another broken system.
Money isn’t going to the people who NEED it.

Stimulus checks should go to those who need it. Those who have not lost income should not get it.
What about those who have maintained their jobs but have had to unexpectedly pay for new childcare costs due to children suddenly not in school? Frontline and healthcare workers did not have the opportunity to WFH and had to scramble to find and pay for childcare at extended hours.

Yes this was my point in a comment I made. The cap makes no sense it should be of everyone of you are going to give it to people who didn’t loose income.
Unemployment irks me too but it has irked me from the beginning. No one should be getting paid more money then what they were making while working.
To say they still can’t handle a way to make it that you only get the amount of money you were getting while working is bullshitt. The amount of money they put into a stimulus package they could have a had a team dedicated to working on program to make this happen by now! Maybe not at the behind but it’s been a year no reason they don’t have one in place!!

What do they in the summer when there is no school or on school breaks. I don’t think they getting it just for that is a good excuse to use.
Using school as daycare shouldn’t be expected. If you work you should expect to have to pay for daycare if your spouse significant other etc can’t do it.

What’s your take in these stimulus checks?
I really have trouble believing people who say they don’t want this money and they rather not have it, that it doesn’t make them somewhat happy or at least a little relieved to get a small amount. I think people think it sounds good on paper, but I don’t buy it.
Add the fact that many people didn’t get raises or a bonus this year because of Covid... even if you stayed employed, or had to work from home, some cost increased somewhere for you. Electric bill, phone bill, food bill, etc from working from home or kids home.
But if anyone has some moral issue taking their second (third?) stimulus, feel free to FM me so I can arrange a pick-up.

I don't think it's that hard to believe when you are seeing people around you suffering and businesses that have been around for decades closing. I find it hard to believe that anyone who has not been adversely affected to want to take the money. I don't believe anyone should be getting anything for free unless they truly need it.

I saved a lot this year on gas, commuting, wear and tear on my car, hair, make up, work clothes, dry cleaning etc. While I didn't get my raise I did get a much higher bonus this quarter as company expenses were way down since we are all locked at home and not traveling and entertaining customers. So profits were way up andmy bonus reflected that. I 100% made out better this year. I'll throw the money in the bank when it comes and forget about it. Not complaining about free money but I just think it would be better served going to people who need it...maybe a larger, more significant payment to those who really need it rather than these small amounts to the everyone

I didn’t mean to pick on you, I’m sorry if it came off that way. I meant more in general, reading comments here and on social media too. I do agree that those who are really hard hit should be tended to.

I didn’t say it I wouldn’t rather have it. I think honestly it’s bullshittt that some get it and some don’t when no income is lost. I find it more unfair. Either everyone should get the stimulus or it should only be for people who lost income not matter what they make. It’s the fair way to do it.

What do they in the summer when there is no school or on school breaks. I don’t think they getting it just for that is a good excuse to use.
Using school as daycare shouldn’t be expected. If you work you should expect to have to pay for daycare if your spouse significant other etc can’t do it.
It’s one thing to pay a couple grand in the summer months for camp and a small amount during the year for before/after care. I thankfully didn’t need it but I no longer budget for full time daycare for my kids now that they are school aged.
I know my friends hospital offered some subsidies - which was good because she was paying a lot for a private babysitter since the daycare we used for school aged kids was closed.

I am not 100% positive but I do think for first responders who worked day shifts, the schools were suppose to provide childcare for those children. I know our district did.
