Stimulus checks should go to those who need it. Those who have not lost income should not get it.
What about those who have maintained their jobs but have had to unexpectedly pay for new childcare costs due to children suddenly not in school? Frontline and healthcare workers did not have the opportunity to WFH and had to scramble to find and pay for childcare at extended hours.
What do they in the summer when there is no school or on school breaks. I don’t think they getting it just for that is a good excuse to use.
Using school as daycare shouldn’t be expected. If you work you should expect to have to pay for daycare if your spouse significant other etc can’t do it.
It’s one thing to pay a couple grand in the summer months for camp and a small amount during the year for before/after care. I thankfully didn’t need it but I no longer budget for full time daycare for my kids now that they are school aged.
I know my friends hospital offered some subsidies - which was good because she was paying a lot for a private babysitter since the daycare we used for school aged kids was closed.
I am not 100% positive but I do think for first responders who worked day shifts, the schools were suppose to provide childcare for those children. I know our district did.
It was offered through our districts but not free. When you aren’t expecting to financially cover daycare until the summer, it is very hard for some to come up with childcare costs for multiple kids, for this prolonged period of time, right away.

Unfortunately for working people school is a blessing and pay for before and after care.

It truly stinks for Long Island as 80k / 160k isn’t ‘wealthy’. It’s not fair that a couple making $150k in Oklahoma gets it but a family on Long Island making $175k doesn’t. It’s a broken system.
The extra unemployment irks me too....not motivating many to get jobs. I see tons of help wanted signs all over. Yet people on my social media who are enjoying making more on unemployment are out enjoying beautiful days at port Jeff harbor doing some shopping and lunch. Another broken system.
Money isn’t going to the people who NEED it.
I agree. I know a few people that DH wanted to employ by putting them in payroll and they decided not to do it because they didn’t wanna lose the unemployment they’ve been getting. I’m talking about young men that are totally capable of actually working and earning a living but instead they’re becoming lazy and used to getting free money.

What do you even mean by this? You make it sound like anyone who can't afford day care ongoing just shouldn't have kids. Most working parents I know suck up the cost for day care for a few years. I paid $25k a year for 2 kids in day care. I kept working knowing I'd only have that burden for a few years. Last year was the last year I was going to have to pay for daycare. This year the schools were opening only 2 days/week. I have to work, and cant work from home. I put the kids in Catholic school at a coat of $14k a year because I could afford to and it was convenient for me but there are many who can't afford to and have had to stop working. No one expects to have exorbitant care costs for school aged kids. Your comment is very short sighted and lacks any sort of empathy...

Re: What’s your take in these stimulus checks?
I think it's important to look at the bigger picture and realize the checks are just one part of an enormous bill.
Many of the other items are in fact targeted towards people in need - unemployment benefits, rent and food assistance, lowering the cost of health care under the ACA, a tax credit for children, etc. A lot of people are going to get vital help from this bill.
The checks are direct payments because we are in a pandemic and it's quicker to just cut most people a check. I'm not sure what people expect the government to do to make sure no one gets a check they don't need - issue a survey to people? Even households not claiming unemployment could have taken a pay cut. Implementing all of those logistics to figure out who needs it and who doesn't costs money and time.
If people get money they don't need, that doesn't really bother me. We're not talking about a ton of people. I would rather help too many people than too few. Maybe that extra $1400 sitting in the bank makes someone feel a little more secure and ready for an emergency. I know that's what I felt when I stuck my two partial checks in the bank last year. And now I'm better prepared to buy a car this year, which we apparently now need sooner than I thought, which will pump money into the economy.
I have mixed feelings about the new income limits. On one hand, they have to draw the line somewhere. DH and I are two of the 12 million people who are out of luck but we also didn't lose money because of the pandemic, so in that sense, with us the income limit did its job, so to speak.
However, with the way our system works in general - for profit healthcare, high college costs, and a minimal social safety net - I can absolutely see how someone with a relatively high income can find themselves in a difficult situation.
They were never going to make everyone happy but there are a lot of great things about this bill and it is very popular in bipartisan polls.

ITA that it has helped some have some type of savings as many, many people can not save anything on a regular basis. I am grateful that I won’t have to go and charge things I need when I get mine as I have some things with the house that need to be done.

I know what daycare costs I paid it. And I always expect to have to pay it. If I could afford it back then I can afford even if I don’t want to.
I just don’t think anyone should depend on school has daycare. Is it nice that we don’t have pay cause they are in school yes but I am always prepared to put it when o have to have it.
No one said you can’t have kids of you can’t afford daycare. I’m not being dramatic like that. The real problem Is daycare is just extremely expensive and my point is what they do when schools closed they have to find daycare somewhere for those times.

Most don’t have that daycare money anymore as when the kids get older other expenses go up. Most need before and after care until middle school.

What’s your take in these stimulus checks?
I’m sure there are many who will receive it and don’t need it. In that case, stimulate the economy by spending it on needs that can be donated. Diapers or food for a community table or food bank. There are many who will receive it and STILL won’t be able to stimulate the economy.

Yes, but school vacations are planned. You anticipate having to pay for care during those times. You don’t anticipate having to pay for care due to a global pandemic.
It never occurred to me that school would ever be off the table and I’d be paying a fortune to supplement my kindergartener’s school day on top of the exorbitant taxes I pay.

I agree with you. I really thought that the districts were giving childcare for free during the shut down. I wasn't aware there was a cost. Any family that had to pay for child care above and beyond what they normally did, should have been subsidized. The execution of these "relief funds" is really poorly done.

Maybe it should be in the stimulus bill instead of all the pork that is going to other countries.

I think you have to consider some of the more reaching effects of sudden unexpected childcare expenses. In my case, many healthcare providers opted to take leave to take care of kids at home because it was cheaper than childcare. As a result, hospital Covid units were left more short staffed than they already were(from staff sick from Covid) and patient census per provider rose. I can most definitely tell you, from my own eyes, that patient care suffered because of this, in the very worst ways.

It is not true that there is a lot of "pork going to other countries."

The money for state and local governments that Republicans are mostly against - lest it help "blue states" - could go to this effort although I'll say that my local SCOPE had free childcare for health care workers last spring. I didn't read every post so I'm not sure what need in particular everyone is talking about.

So.you have no problem with any of this and no problem paying for full time day care indefinitely for school aged children? You cant deny that this is an unexpected financial burden for families. You should just admit that you misspoke or didnt think your response through completely...

That is a good thing to hear then. It should have all stayed here in the states, IMO.

Re: What’s your take in these stimulus checks?
I think the money would've been better suited going to those that lost income and I don't agree with the caps, but who am I to say other people didn't need it as well for whatever unexpected expense may have arised? We should know by now that government inefficiency exists and it's probably cheaper just to cut everyone a check than it is to hire the manpower to maintain websites and comb through the finances of every single American to see who qualifies within $1. I'm less annoyed that a couple thousand dollars went to the average American family who may not have really needed it at that moment than millions of aid dollars earmarked for struggling small businesses being given to large corporations at the expense of those small businesses.
Americans: We need to stop giving money to other countries and help Americans! America First ya ding dongs!
Govt: How about we cut everyone a check to do whatever they please with... supplement lost income, pay for increased childcare since apparently school isn't a thing anymore, put in savings for rainy day fund since so many Americans don't even have much savings, spend it at a small business and pump back into the economy, donate to charity, or paying for other unexpected miscellaneous pandemic expenses like buying a lifetime supply of toilet paper to build a fortress of protection against the virus or paying for the therapy they need to deal with the depression caused by being trapped at home for what feels like a decade at least.
Americans: Hold up. I didn't approve this. How much did these people's childcare expenses really increase?? I'm going to have to see some documentation before deciding who really needs it.

I think the major point being missed is that every American did not receive a check. So if they are already putting restrictions on it, then do the restrictions correctly.

I agree. Like I said I don't agree with the cap.

What’s your take in these stimulus checks?
I also agree with another response in here. Why couldn’t they take a chunk of the money and actually invest in the technical that those on unemployment aren’t making more than they were when employed?

For the most part I think that stopped in the summer when the $600 extra stopped. MAX unemployment in NYS is $504 a week, right now the supplement is $300 per week, but in the last year there were weeks/months where it was just $504 per week. So if you don't get taxes taken out, you can get a max $804 per week. I made that when I was 25 years old (I'm 40 now). Plus that is IF you don't have taxes taken out so it'll bite you at tax time.

So that’s about $40k a year....to sit home and enjoy the summer. Why would you be motivated if you were making slightly more and actually going to work? Obviously those who were making $75k plus a year can’t survive but someone who was making $50-55k and is home and doesn’t need to pay for childcare or anything anymore. Why go to work? If you are in your 20’s living at home....why take a job making what you could make sitting home?
