Re: When did everyone get so angry ?
Posted by Christine
For me it's the pace of living here. There's so many people and only so many places to go - herding in & out of stores, trains, penn station. I am starting to feel like Tom Hanks in the beginning of Joe vs. the Volcao.
Then add that common courtesy seems to have fallen to the wayside where situations like this are not uncommon and even justified.
It isn't only in NY. I live in Dallas, Texas and it is awful here. People are grumpy, mean, evil, awful. It is a good thing that I am such a sweetheart.

I also think we have this sense of entitlement because we've never truly SUFFERED.
Think about it... my parents were raised by people who were raised during the depression... so when my parent's were growing up-- their parents had an attitude like: 'BE HAPPY WITH WHAT YOU HAVE...'
they raised us in a *better* economical time, and because they had to be happy with what THEY had, they wanted to give US better...
So we were raised with more... and we want more....
it's a cycle... really. We don't know how to suffer.
I absolutely agree with this!!!
I think about that point a lot. What do we really know about suffering and hard life? I look at my grandma--she was born in the 20s in Europe, went through WWII, lived in Leningrad during the blockade when her cousin died in her arms, saw her dad taken away during the Stalin's repressions at the age of 38 never to be seen again, 2 of her brothers died in battles of WWII, half of her family has been wiped out during Holocaust...
Comparing to that what are our little troubles...? I often think about that generation when dealing with difficult times in life, just for comparison... Life immediately looks better!
Edited because I can't spell!

Re: When did everyone get so angry ?
I'm a pretty laid back person so it really bugs me when people go off on the littlest things. I have been noticing that a lot lately too.
Yesterday, DH and I called for an elevator to go down and a guy standing next to us apparently wanted to go up. He got on our down elevator with us and when he noticed it was going down, he said a few curse words and pushed his floor button several times. The way he acted, it was almost like he was mad at us because we didn't tell him it was going down. (If we could read minds, we might've told him.)
As soon as we exited, we were both . It's his own fault for not looking at the elevator direction before getting on but to curse out and get mad is a bit much.

Re: When did everyone get so angry ?
yes, I have noticed that people in general are less patient and more angry.
Do you remember after 9/11? For months, maybe a year, everyone was pleasant each other, people were kinder while driving, in the stores, etc.
Where did that feeling go?

Re: When did everyone get so angry ?
I think part of it is that anger begets anger. So you get annoyed at rude/angry people, you become mote angry & it is a chain reaction.
My mom just told me that her car was hit in a parking lot just & the driver waiting for her to come out & gave her his business card & they have since been in touch & he is taking care of all of the damages.
I thought it was so nice of him, and nice of my mom to not be angry--some people would still be annoyed because they have to be without their car for a few days (my mom on the other hand says --it's cold--I'm staying here anyway!)

I've been making a REAL effort lately to change my thinking and be happy with what I have, not get so jealous of others, etc. Not just material stuff, but the good things in my life like my family is healthy, etc. It really has made a difference. I'm much happier and I enjoy my life more now that I don't waste all this energy thinking about the stuff I want in my life. It doesn't mean I don't want things, but I don't let it consume me.
