We switched him last week. He is 21 months. Pedi said it would be ok because he easily meets weight and height. He is now much happier in the car.
I know it's a personal decision. This is what was best for us at this time.
If your pediatrician says that it's okay then he/she is going against the recommendation of the American Academy of Pediatrics and is not up to date on proper car seat education. I would personally do your own research and see why foward facing at a young age is not only dangerous but potentially deadly in an accident because of the possibility of internal decapitation.
Go to Joel's journey and read about the dangers and consequences. Also THIS article explains it very well too.
Height and weight have nothing to do with bone maturity and safety.

DS changed to FF in DH's car a day or two ago - he is almost 1.5. We decided to switch him because he was kicking the seat and loosening his car seat. We are making a long trip in my car next week and will switch him forward there too. It's a personal decision. I really wanted to wait until 2, but I think this is just what will work best for us! I will probably keep DS2 RF for longer because he will have his brother to talk to!
If kicking the seat is loosening the seat then there's a very good chance the seat wasn't installed properly to begin with. Have you been to a car seat check ever? Or seen a certified car seat technician on your own?
You might say it's a personal decision but when studies and statistics show that a child is 500% safer rear facing, Why take the chance?

Yup! The "famous" saying is Cast it or Casket (as horrible as it sounds, it's true)

There's technically no law about rear-facing seats in NY (or any state, I think). The wording is " If under age four, he or she must be properly secured in a federally-approved child safety seat that is attached to a vehicle by a safety belt or universal child restraint anchorage (LATCH) system."
The recommendations (based on years of research, and lots of testing), are to keep them rear-facing for a minimum of 2 years, but it's not actually a law.

My sister took hers to get inspected years ago for my niece and they said better a broken leg than a broken skull to her too. That stuck with me.

My DD is only 15 months and still rear facing but I plan to keep her that way until she reaches the maximum height/weight of her seat.

I like this quote: Rear facing is not a choice to be made based on parenting style or opinion; it’s one based on scientific fact. The more we know about crashes, the better we’re able to protect our kids from severe injury as a result of a crash.
To answer dd is 22mos and still rear facing. However I get confused. We have a britax pavilion, and she's not a big girl usually scores25-50p in height and weight. I cannot imagine her fitting in there until age 3or 4. It has nothing to do with her legs bc she can cross them but her shoulders and the length of her body. How do you guys fit them in?

Unfortunately, Britax seats are not the best for extended rear facing unless your child is under the 25th percentile or all legs. That's most likely why your seat won't last you until age 4, which is what most CPSTs like to see kids RF until.

Right, in a car seat PROPERLY SECURED. All child seats say use only rear facing for a child under 1 year old and under 20 pounds. So you can not legally use a child seat foward facing for a child under 1 or under 20 pounds because the child's is not PROPERLY SECURED.

Re: When did you change to fwd facing?
18 months - and flame away - but my daughter gets very car sick and threw up EVERY single day she was in the car facing backwards. Even when she had nothing to eat since the night before and even when we only went somewhere that was 5 minutes away and no matter who was driving. It is much better now forward facing and we got the ok from the ped.
So yes, I do think this was a parenting decision. Do I want my daughter to throw up a few times a day, do I never want to take her anywhere in a car or do I want her to be a fraction less safe facing forward.
I don't regret my decision for a second.

Re: When did you change to fwd facing?
I turned my son when he was 18 months. I really want to turn DD. She is about to be 18 months next week. I am going to wait though because I only want to turn her for stupid reasons that don't trump her safety.

When did you change to fwd facing?
She was past two.
Honestly she didn't care. We did it for our own convenience at that point. She had her legs crossed but it didn't bother her at all. We had a Recaro and its super comfy. I didn't like her legs dangling forward facing so we waited until her seated position FF was comfy.
I wanted her knees past the base and where her legs wouldn't fall asleep. Pretty much nearly to the point of putting them up on the seat in front of her. (yeah another danger if you ask me).
She was comfy and content in RF so we didn't bother to move her. It was easier to take her out RF if she was asleep and to put her in her bed.

Re: When did you change to fwd facing?
My DS is 2y10.5m and we are still rear-facing in our britax advocate. We will rear-face until he hits the max limits for our seat (britax advocate). He is currently 36" tall and appx 31 lbs so I'm guessing we will be able to make it to 3, maybe longer. He folds his legs and doesnt complain.

Oh that's good to know. We have the advocate too. Dd is 12 months and 31" and 23lbs. I will push it until she reaches the max.

When did you change to fwd facing?
For all you britax people please remember you can only rearface until your child's head is one inch below the shell of the seat, not the headwings that extend above the shell.

This is the specs for ours Child Seated Shoulder Height (in) Rear Facing: 9 - 16.75 Forward Facing: 12 - 16.75

Re: When did you change to fwd facing?
Right but if you also read the manual it will say the child's head must be an inch below the shell.
The manuals tend to overstate height limits. And your kid could have a big or little head a long or short neck, etc. teo kids of the same height could have their heads at different places.
The headwings on the britax seats are not reinforced. Children need an inch above the heads when rearfacing as in an accident they ride up, and that shell prevents neck injuries.

When did you change to fwd facing?
I understand. It gives the seated height, not the total height. It's from their tush to top of head so it allows for that inch below

That's why Britax seats aren't recommended for kids that are on the mid to higher percentiles.

Those are a seated shoulder height limits not top of head limits. Depending on the proportions of the child that might not be accurate.
