When did you know if your child is a righty or lefty?
Dd is 14 months and dh and I have noticed that she pretty much always feeds herself finger foods with her left hand. Occasionally she will use her right hand to eat but for the most part it's always her left. We also recently started to let her practice brushing her teeth and she always holds the tooth brush with her left hand. Is it likely she will be left handed, or is it too early to tell? Just curious.

Re: When did you know if your child is a righty or lefty?
When my kids were about two years old I put crayons on the table and asked my kids to pick them up. I did not put them in any specific hand, I wanted to see which they would choose. DH is a lefty and I am a righty.

Some of them, very early on. My last, not until around 2 was there clearly a preference.

When did you know if your child is a righty or lefty?
My LO has always used left hand. To eat, color, play, brush teeth, grab things. Mostly left over right since he was 12(?)mos and is now almost 2.

Re: When did you know if your child is a righty or lefty?
Honestly, at just a few months old. She always favored her right hand whether she was going to pick something up, play with something, hold something in her hand, feed herself, etc. It was pretty obvious she would be a righty. She's 5yo old now..........she's a righty.

When did you know if your child is a righty or lefty?
DS is just about 21 months and he clearly favors his right hand. I was hoping he would be a lefty like me but I guess he had to inherit something from his daddy.

We could tell at like 6 months(he is 19 months now)He has always always favored his right hand for eating/throwing/grabbing /coloring etc. My DH and I are both left handed. We thought about returning him for a better model.

Re: When did you know if your child is a righty or lefty?
MY DD is 3 1/2 and we still can't tell. She writes with one hand and then will switch to the other half way through. I read somewhere that lefties tend to start out ambidextrous.

This exactly! DD is only a year now, but she seems so clearly right handed that I would be shocked if she turned out to be left handed. I read somewhere that if both parents are left handed, there is a really small chance that the kid will also be left handed, so we weren't surprised when she started favoring her right hand. We also thought about returning her for a better model

When did you know if your child is a righty or lefty?
I'm lefty and DH is righty.
DS 1 is almost 4 and is a righty - he does everything righty. DS 2 is 21 months and seems to favor is left hand for eating, writing, throwing, etc so we think he most likely will be a lefty.

Wow - that's odd. Based on what they taught us in bio in high school - I would have assumed that two left handed people would have a left handed child...

When did you know if your child is a righty or lefty?
5 She still prefers to throw, carry and any large gross motor skills with her left
Her fine motor skills such as painting, drawing and writing are all done with her right.
We have lefties on both sides of our family. But she's a rightie
Meh :D

DS is a lefty, and he has shown a preference maybe 1 1/2? eating, crayons, anything he just goes for his left hand first.
My girls seem to be righty's (they are 6 and 2).

DH & I are just noticing that when we hand DS a utensil in his left hand he always transfers to his right. He'll be 2 in a few weeks.

When did you know if your child is a righty or lefty?
I knew my first daughter was a lefty at 6 weeks old. Everything she grabbed for was with the left hand. My middle daughter I knew was righty ariund the same time. My youngest seems to use both hands so far (6 months) but if I had to guess, I'd say righty.

Yes they taught wrong in highschool lol. Handedness is not a "Mendelian trait" in fact they haven't really isolated a single gene for handendness which means simple dominant/recessive characteristics don't apply to the handedness of your child Here is some interesting info: When people have looked at handedness, it just doesn't follow simple rules. For example, if both parents are right-handed, there is a 1 in 10 chance of having a left-handed child (10%). The same is true if the dad is left-handed. If the mother is left-handed, the odds rise to 2 in 10. And if both parents are left-handed, the child has a 3 in 10 chance of being left-handed (about 26-29% of lefties have 2 left handed parents).

Re: When did you know if your child is a righty or lefty?
It's funny it seems that lefties definitely would prefer their children to be lefty (despite all of our challenges hehe). What about you right handed people, would you prefer a righty or lefty

We realized DS was a lefty pretty much by 2/2 1/2 years old...
DH is very happy about it...something to do with being a baseball pitcher...

Re: When did you know if your child is a righty or lefty?
DS used his left hand for a lot when he was younger. Coloring, eating, throwing..... He is now 4 and he is doing more with his right hand now. His OT says he is still young and it can go either way. I am a righty and his father is a lefty.

I guess it doesn't really matter, but since dh and I are both righties and it seems dd may be a lefty I'm a little nervous about teaching her to write and use scissors, not sure if its any more difficult.
