When did you stop waking your infant to eat
I am exclusively BFing and currently I make sure not to let DD go past 3 hours without nursing (with the exception of overnight). I pretty much have to wake her at least 2 times during the day to eat. Should I keep on doing this? She is 7 weeks old today and the longest she will sleep through the night is 5 hours tops.

IMO, continue waking her during the day so she can learn her days and nights, so she can learn to sleep longer at night!

Ditto. She never slept long enough for me to have to wake her ever! Even from day 1. And if by some miracle she did sleep longer than 2-3 hours I was so grateful and exhausted I just slept too- and thanked my lucky stars for that one day!

Re: When did you stop waking your infant to eat
I never wake DD to eat she is like clockwork and if she goes a little longer I know she will make up for it by taking more the next feeding.

Re: When did you stop waking your infant to eat
def stop waking her up. when she wakes up on her own she will be hungry and eat. you dont need to wake her at all.
i had a preemie that needed to gain weight and i stopped waking her to eat after the first week home (around 5w).

Re: When did you stop waking your infant to eat
I also ebf. DD is 6 weeks old and I don't really wake her to eat. She is pretty good about eating every 3 hours during the day, sometimes 4 hours after her first morning feed, and every 1.5-2.5 hours in the evening. She generally sleeps 4-6 hours at night. Last feed is usually around 11-11:45.

Re: When did you stop waking your infant to eat
For those of you who BF and didn't wake LO up to eat during the day I have 2 questions :
Did your supply ever dip?
Did your DC eventually figure out their own day and night schedule and STTN?

Re: When did you stop waking your infant to eat
We had to wake DD to eat in the beginning because she lost a lot of weight. But once we hit 4 weeks and she had a good weight gain, the ped said we could stop. She still wakes to eat roughly every 2.5 to 4 hours, but has gone longer at night a few times. She even STTN twice so far and is 4 weeks old. So this seems to be working for us.

never woke her to eat...she took care of that on her own. I EBF'd the first 3 mths and she was sleeping through the night pretty early. I didn't wake her.

my supply didn't dip...it adjusted to her STTN. There was always enough for her

if you are directly breastfeeding, your LO is the one controlling the milk supply. therefore, your supply shouldnt dip. whenever she eats is when your body is programmed to make milk. That is usually why they have growth spurts. they continuously eat, to help you make more milk for their growing needs. just feed whenever the baby needs to eat and your body will adjust to those times. similarly, when she is ready to drop a feeding or sleep through the night, your body will know to stop making milk during those times. keep your water intake up though to help make more milk.
Day and night schedule was done from the day we brought her home. Lights and noise in the day. dim lights and quiet at nighttime. we never had a problem with her being confused between the two.

Re: When did you stop waking your infant to eat
i ABSOLUTELY woke DD to eat during the day (at night i let her sleep until she woke hungry). i did this for a while until she started being awake longer. i stuck to a pretty strict schedule and i have to say at 4wks DD was sleeping through the night 6hours and gradually increased her time at night until she was sleeping 12hours.
waking to feed helped establish a routine and determine the difference between day & night.
per my ped we went 2hrs, then 2.5hrs, then 3, and by the time it needed to be longer than that, DD was awake longer and we continued to stick to our schedule. at 16mos, we still have our schedule and it works perfectly for us.
i would highly suggest continuing waking to eat.

Re: When did you stop waking your infant to eat
I never woke my kids to eat. If I happened to wake up and they were sleeping, I pumped (also BF'ed) to keep up my supply and get rid of engorgement.
My son was 7lbs 15oz and both girls were 8lbs 10oz at birth, so dr told me there was no need to wake them.
ETA: To answer you other question, DD#1 slept thru the night from day 1 - 10 hours her first night home!
DS - He woke up on his own every 3hrs or so, but if he didnt, I did not wake up. I returned to work 6 weeks PP and needed all the sleep I could get. I never had a dip in my supply and he never had days/nights confused.
DD#2 - Pretty much same as DS. She was sttn much earlier than him though.

Re: When did you stop waking your infant to eat
Hmmm. Well I definitely don't intend to wake her overnight to eat. I guess my main concern is if I let her sleep as she pleases during the day, will she ever regulate herself on a normal daytime/nighttime routine
