When did your DC have a word explosion?

I feel like DD has been saying the same 10-15 words for the last few months adding a new one in once in a while. She knows so much but doesn't say as much as she knows (if that makes sense!). Just curious when your DC had a word explosion... DD is 15 months.

Re: When did your DC have a word explosion?

We're still waiting and we're at 17 1/2 months.

My older DD was saying a good 30 words by the time she was 1 and was speaking to you by 18 months with 3-4 word sentences. Every child is different.

We're still waiting at 25 months old. But I have a boy, and *most* boys don't talk as soon as girls do.

Re: When did your DC have a word explosion?

I would say you usually see a big word explosion around 18-22 months. It's great that she is understanding everything!

ETA- My DS is only 3.5 months so no word explosion yet Chat Icon I'm a speech therapist.

DD is 17.5 months and it has started. I mean, they are not all recognizable words....you'd have to know that "Be Bir" is Big Bird, but still.........Chat Icon

Re: When did your DC have a word explosion?

I've noticed a huge increase in her words now at 20 months. She'll try to say pretty much anything we ask and seems to know so much more.

Re: When did your DC have a word explosion?

between 15-18 months. She had very few words before then (I think maybe 6) and then all of a sudden she started saying multiple new words a day and started putting 2 words together shortly after. It was amazing.

Re: When did your DC have a word explosion?

DS had a burst at 16 months, but I attribute that to getting the tubes put in his ears. He had a major burst at around 19-20 months.

Re: When did your DC have a word explosion?

Thanks, I guess I shouldn't be expecting it for a few months then. She just knows so much (all animals, animal sounds, all body parts, all her stuffed animals by name, etc) but will still point and say "this, this" to most things. I was wondering if there was anything else I could be doing to promote actually saying what she knows.

Re: When did your DC have a word explosion?

20 months..DS

I was beginning to think it was never going to happen bec I was comparing him at about 15-18 months to his sister (which I know is worng - but you can't help it) and now he puts two words together and I have stopped counting how many words...it almost feels like it happened over night!

Re: When did your DC have a word explosion?

I noticed in watching my nieces & nephew learn to talk that my nephew who was first born took longer to speak. Especially when it came to asking for something he wanted. Meanwhile my nieces who are second & third born children asked for things earlier then he did.
I also noticed the same thing in my friends two children.

I think its possible that when you have 1 DC you tend to do things for them & give them what they want quicker. Meanwhile when you have more children you take longer & it forces them to vocalize more.

Re: When did your DC have a word explosion?

For mine-I would say around 18 mos. Then they slowed down and used the same words over and over. Now at almost 2 they are starting to use more new words(and more complicated words like, "raining")

Re: When did your DC have a word explosion?

I would say by about 18 months we couldn't keep track of how many words my DD knew anymore and she was starting to string together words in like 2-3 word sentences. She had been saying a handful of words for a while then all of a sudden her vocabulary just blew up.......it happened so quick.
