I took my twins at 3 and boy was that a nightmare. Now at 4 1/2, one is great and one still gives a hard time there. My youngest is 3 and I haven't mustered the courage yet to bring himChat Icon

At 3 we took dd to our dentist not a pediatric one. I must have pretended dentist with her 50 times so she was ready when he told her he wanted to look at her teeth. I also told her that if she was really good he would brush her teeth with an electric toothbrush. lol she totally bought it and when it was time for the brushing she actually enjoyed it instead of freaking out like I thought would happen.

The American Dental association recommendation is that dental visits should start at a year old.

I love these recommendations. My child had no teeth at a year old.

But I'm sure a dentist would have LOVED to have billed my insurance company to look at her beautiful gums!

LOL!
The dentists seem to say 1 year, but even my pediatrician was like yeah, you could probably wait until they are at least 2 when they might sit still for that.

We took DS#1 around 3+ I think and DS#2 (he'll be 3 in July) we'll maybe try soon just because the dentist knows we have him and has been saying we should bring him since he got a tooth. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Of COURSE the dentists say 1 year old!
It's all about the Benjamin's!

We took DS to my regular dentist at 3. I asked the girl that usually cleans my teeth and she said that was fine. She said as long as you're brushing every day, 3 years old is fine.

On a side note, I don't understand the need for a pediatric dentist. Can someone explain it to me? I'm not being snarky, genuinely interested in knowing the reason to go there instead of your regular dentist.

Ugh. I meant to make an appointment for DD when she turned 2, but I didn't get my act together to make the appointment until she was 2.5. The only pediatric dentist around where I live in MA is open Mon-Fri. So I had to get an appointment for when DD is off from school. Couldn't get an appointment during April break so I had to stick with June. DH is taking her.
Hope she does ok!

ETA: I decided on a pediatric dentist because I figure if you specialize working with kids, you have a few tricks up your sleeve. I have no idea if DD is even going to open her mouth.
When I was 3 I needed stitches. I still remember the plastic surgeon. He was awful with kids, My parents switched me to a pediatric plastic surgeon after that and it was a much better experience.

For us we liked the fact that it was all geared towards kids. The waiting room had tons if toys, coloring pages, tvs playing cartoons etc. The exam rooms were all kid decorated and less scary. Tvs in there too. I thought the dentists might be better with young kids as that is what they specialized in. I wasn't sure how DD would react or if she'd be scared so I figured the more kid friendly the better just in case. My insurance covered pediatric dentists so I figured why not?

My dentist told me between 4 and 5 is good, so my youngest will go then. We brush her teeth so we keep an eye out for anything unusual and would bring her in early if we notice anything. We use a family dentist.

The recommendation from the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry is 6 months after the first tooth comes in or by age 1, whichever comes first. That being said, I took my daughter to a pediatric dentist around 20 months. They counted her teeth, used that rubber buffer thing with the toothpaste and then brushed on "sparkles," a vitamin varnish.

WE took DS when he was 3.5. I called a dentist at 2.5 and they told me he was too young. DD was 2.5 as I took her with DS. Both did great and no issues.

Interesting. So if by age 1 no teeth are in you are supposed to take them to the dentist?
For what?
A gum exam?

I think my insurance covers it starting at age 1. We provably went at 2. They just flossed and brushed teeth.

we took DS around maybe 2.5. we just took him to the dentist that DH and i go to. DH and i booked our appointments back to back (bc one of us had to watch DS)... so at the end of DH's appointment when he was still in the chair, she had DS lay on DHs lap in the chair and just looked around in his mouth a little bit. just to kind of get him used to the idea.... i think his first real cleaning was at 3.5 or 4.... he's 5 now, and does really well with it and likes our dentist. walks in there like he owns the place! HAHAHA he's never had to have any fillings or anything yet.... so we might look into a ped. dentist if he needs something like that. but so far, its been fine with our regular dentist. she has 3 younger kids, so she's really good at handling him Chat Icon

stupid question...but does your medical insurance or dental insurance cover the kid's dental visit?

I assume dental plan...which sucks because we have DD and DS on medical insurance but not on the dental plan.
Guess we'll have to wait until 2017, so DD will be 2.5 years old by then.

Plus right now, we can't even get her to let US brush her teeth, so I doubt she will let a dentist do it.

Dental plan
Unless they had to see like an oral surgeon or something for a medical issue I'd assume

Thanks.
Then it'll have to wait until next year (after we select the plans for 2017)
