And then the bill is just split evenly per person or per couple, what amount would make you think that a friend's choice of restaurant was too expensive?

Never really thought about it. But does the menu not have the prices on it? I feel like waiting for the check to ***** about prices is a little silly.

Depends how much everyone drinks? For someone else's occasion 150 pp?

Eta- I also consider the place. Quality of food, execution, etc If the meal was mediocre at best, I'd just shake my head and know to cross it off the list.

I don't drink so if chipping in for the birthday friend, I'd be annoyed if I had to pay more than $40-50 for just myself + chipping in. I'm poor and I'm cheap and this is why I would probably decline.

ETA: I now decline invites out from certain people. DH and I went to dinner for SIL's birthday once. It was us, SIL, her husband, and son, and another couple and their son. They all had drinks, DH and I did not. They also had 3 people in each of their parties whereas DH and I were just us 2. They split the bill by 3 so DH and I paid for their drinks and their kids' meals. $80 for what would normally cost us about $40, $50 if we chipped in for SIL. Never again.

Including a lot of drinks bottles of wine I would say more than $150. 2 drinks each then $100

$100 per person, but my husband does not drink, and I I would likely only have one glass of wine or a mixed drink. I would expect the minimum to go out in NYC about 65 per person for a decent place in NYC. If we were going to Nobu or somewhere like that my expectations would be different. But I have to say if there are no prices on the menu, I would make it my business to find out prices beforehand.

DH and I both drink but if there are friends who do not drink at all I adjust the bill bc drinks can get pricey and IMO that's not fair. I expect these sort of dinners to add up, I mean as a guest you look up the restaurant online, if it looks pricey decline the invite, it's hard to say how much it will really come to bc it depends on how much food is ordered and drinks but you can gauge if a place is super expensive or reasonable.

When I've gone out with a big group (even to a nice place) with apps, drinks, nice meals, and desserts I've really never had to pay more than $40-50/pp. More than that would seem excessive to me. But that being said, NYC is crazy expensive compared to the island so I'd probably expect to pay closer to $100/pp in the city.

When we go out for a friend's b'day on LI and pay for the birthday person, it usually comes out to somewhere in the $50 - $60 range, pp. In the city, I'd expect it to be a little more ($20 - $30 more). That being said, we usually try to pick a place based on knowing who is coming - some friends have more limited budgets, so if they are coming, we try to pick less expensive places. If budget is less of a concern, dinner pp is more likely to be in the $65ish range

DH and i dont go out often for things like that, but twice a year we do a big friend dinner in the city and we expect it to be a $300 night. We always split the bill evenly

If someone else is planning something, I always look at the menu before hand so I know what to expect if I/we attend.

We always pay per couple. Things really add up if there are drinks/ apps/ and desert involved. Could be 150-200 per person, but we always know ahead of time how much the cost will be around.

I think in NYC you are going to pay at least $60 (very casual) -$100 per person if you are drinking. Every time I do dinner with my friends i,f drinks are included, it ends up being about this. I guess anything over $100 per person would annoy me. Like I'm sorry, but I do not want to spend $200 between my DH and I to celebrate your birthday ;)

If we coughed up $200 for every person's birthday we'd need to take our a second mortgage!

Honestly, after a certain age people and their birthday's are ridiculous. Like are you 7 that you really feel the need to throw yourself an elaborate party that I pay for???

Sorry, this is just a pet peeve of mine. I guess I am a birthday grinch. I just feel like every weekend is someone's freakin birthday!!! Like cmon people get over it. Vent over hahaha.

Honestly, unless it's a milestone birthday the whole thing kind of annoys me. I don't like inviting anyone to something they have to pay for, whether it's $20 or $200. I'm not cheap by any means but it just rubs me the wrong way.

For a mutual, lets all go out to dinner night, I guess $100pp in the city? My friends and I would never choose a super expensive place though, so it's hard for me to say.

I wouldn't pick a restaurant over 100 per person though if I were planning for a group. Not everyone has the means or the desire to spend that much on a meal.

I'd expect between $100-$150 a person for a group dinner.

What gets pricey in these group dinners is when you order a bunch of appetizers for the table in addition to main dishes plus bottles of wine + individual cocktails. It's amazing how quickly it adds up.

I think $150 a person for a group birthday dinner is ridiculous, even in the city. I work in the city and have gone out enough and never paid this amount. It's not a wedding! Think about it. $150 a person, 10 ppl, 1500 total. I've never had a bill that high, and usually places will include wine. Jmo, but anything over $75 just for a birthday dinner is crazy to me.

Depends on the crowd, to be honest. We have some friends we go out with where we could spend $400-$500 a couple for just 4 people -
We don't do that often and if it's a place we really want to go to, we'll do it with just a small group -
Big group with all different budgets, I probbly wouldn't go out in the city, it be honest, you're looking at at least $100 pp

and as far as the drinking goes - I totally get it if you're with a small group (2/3 couples) and one couple doesn't drink, while the other(s) have 2 or 3 bottles of wine or something - but if you're with a large group of 10/15, 20 people - it's a total PITA to split the bill by who ate/drank what - You have to go into that knowing you're going to be paying for more that you consumed .........but for ME, it's worth the $$$ b/c it's not really about what I'm eating or drinking, but the fact that I'm hanging out w/ everyone.

Whenever we go out we take into consideration who's drinking and who isn't. If we drink more than the people we're with we will always pay more. I would never want people to pay for something DH and I had.
