He is learning more than you think just by being with/watching her. Body language and non-verbal communication is also an important skill set to learn. If she doesn't speak English, does he speak her language? Im not a teacher-or expert by any means!-I have the same concerns as you with my 2 year old girls cared for at home while I work. But I know that they have learned a lot through play and that's really the best way for them to learn at this age. Let him be a child and learn the way he is supposed to. I don't think anyone is "missing out" by not being in day care. The same way I don't think those in day care are "missing out" by not being at home. It's all just different experiences. We enroll them into library classes where they are in a group setting, do a craft, sing/dance/read and then have free play. We do this 1-2 x's per week and we also enrolled them in a my gym class on the weekends. I feel it gets them some exposure and out of the house but it's not a structured full time school setting. Im just not ready for that. Can she take him to a library class?

She only speaks Chinese and he is 9 months old so he is probably picking up when she speaks to him...she isnt really comfortable taking him out since she doesnt speak the language and if she needed help she wouldnt be able to communicate. I guess I need to think about it some more and we have time to make a decision on what we want to do...

In this case, if possible you could always enroll him into a daycare for 2x a week just to get him some socialization

When do kids normally start nursery school?
My son is in a traditional nursery school and he started at 2 years 9 months in the "2"'s class. We love his school and he has thrived! So happy we did it.

My Daughter started at 2.5 in a 3's program. I agree with the previous poster.. he is learning plenty without you even realizing it. No structured learning is necessary at this age. If you could encourage the grandmother to take him to an event like a library class every now and again that would be great-- otherwise you doing those things on the weekend and interacting with him in the evenings is enough IMO. Taking him for play dates or being around cousins etc.. should help too, at leats that is what I found in my experience.
