When do you do homework?

My dd is in K and this is the first week of homework. I'm curious as too when other kids (especially the young ones) sit and do their homework bc we are having a hard time finding the right time. Thanks

When do you do homework?

For my DS last year the earlier the better because he gets delirious. So it would be snack and half hour TV then 3:30 hwk. On the days I worked and DH had to do it with him in the evening, it tend to be a struggle and took longer.

As soon as they get home unless it's an early gymnastics day, then after it's over.

Re: When do you do homework?

My son is in K, and his homework only takes about 10-15 minutes a night, sometimes even less.

So I usually let him relax a bit after school, have a snack, watch some tv or play outside first, or have a play date, and then try to do the homework in the 4:45-6 pm window. He gets home at 3:15, so I give him an hour or so to do what he wants and decompress -- and on Thursdays, we go to an after school activity from 3:45-4:45.

My first instinct was to have him do it right away and get it done and over with, but he is kind of keyed up when he first gets off the bus. I found he was more attentive and ready to focus on the work after he has some free time. I think they need a break after a long day at school.

He usually doesn't eat dinner until 6 or 6:30, so my goal is to get homework worksheet(s) done before dinner, so after dinner he can play a little more and then do his shower or bath and be in bed by 7:45-8. If he was older with a lot more homework to do, I might insist he start earlier, but right now, this is working for us!

Part of his "homework" is nightly reading, so we do the reading part as part of the bedtime routine.

My DD is in first grade. We do it after dinner at 6:30 (right after my DS goes to sleep too) so she is fed, relaxed, and can concentrate without her little brother driving her crazy. Chat Icon

Re: When do you do homework?

On the nights where we don't have any activities, they can have 20 minutes down time when they get off the bus and then they need to sit down and get it down.

If we do have activities, then right when they get off the bus, they get a snack and sit down and get it done.

Neither of my children like it hanging over their heads if they don't get it done right away.

When do you do homework?

All the freaking time?!

LOL

We get home at 6pm she's in bed by 8:30 (latest 9pm)
So that's 2hours for bath, feeding, reading and homework (in kinder it was writing 3 sentences 3 days a week) and fun time.

So we did this:
Home
5-10min Snack while talk (how was the day, what happened blah blah)
Homework No later than 6:30 start time
Bath time (on those nights) No later than 7pm-7:15
TV while I comb her hair
Dinner - 7:30-7:45
reading, play time
bedtime 8:30

These days in 1st grade
6pm home and snack until 6:15
6:15 homework until 6:30
6:30 ipad homework until 7pm
7pm bath or reading (alternate nights) until 7:30
7:30 dinner until 7:45
7:45-8pm free time
8pm brush and floss
until 8:30 free time
8:30 Meds and bed

No TV until the work is done.
Hubby cooks, I shadow AJ during homework times and I bathe her, read to her. He cleans dishes. Its our game plan.

Oh and heaven forbid but yes we watch TV during dinner. Its part of wind down time and we get to laugh as a family, its fun. I think its fair. :)

Re: When do you do homework?

DS is in K & there is a LOT of homework. What I do like is the teacher gives you the homework for the week on Monday - so to be honest, most of the time I do the majority of it on Monday night.

DS is in aftercare & they do homework with them too. I like this because it does give me a bit of a break being we get home after 6pm most nights & with bath, dinner, etc. it's rough. But...at the same time I also like to do most of it with him because I want to know what he's learning.

In addition to his math sheets, ELA & Fundations, he has to review his sight words nightly & read is reading packet with a couple of A books nightly. We do them together at night as part of our bedtime routine now. We make it fun so it's not so "homeworky" Chat Icon

We have to do it right away. If it doesn't get finished before karate or baseball they finish it after dinner. After dinner takes for ever to get it done.

Is it possible for her to start the hwk at 5 after a 40 minute break? Also can you sit her at the table while you are cooking? I've done this with my DS when he letter writing or tracing, or if it was a math worksheet that he understood. I would explain the directions and then have him start it while I was cooking. It can be a little heftic but atleast some of it will get out of the way before dinner.

My sister is a FWM and her girls will start some of the hwk at 5 and then finish the rest when she gets home at 6/6:30.

Re: When do you do homework?

I wish this wasn't the case, but between 7:30-8:00.

I don't get home from work until 6:00, and we need to wait until my younger DD is in bed, otherwise she's all over him and distracting him. In order for him to have my undivided attention, and for him not to lose his focus, it has to be lights out for the little one before we start.

Unfortunately, she's slowly altering her nap schedule and waking up later during the day, which is pushing bedtime later too.

It's not ideal, but we are managing.

After school snack and then we start homework. I have found the longer we put it off the long it will take them to get it done. Days we have an after school sport or activity the same rule, home then snack then homework.

Re: When do you do homework?

Right now DS gets home, has a snack, 10-15 minutes of downtime, and then homework. Then he can play. He does his 20 minutes of reading while dinner is being prepared. That said, he is in third grade and is able to do it all on his own.
Next year my little one starts kindergarten. I'm already dreading the homework. He won't be able to do it after school because he's watched by my mom and MIL and I can't expect them to do it. It's going to wind up being DH doing homework and getting dinner ready because I work later then him. We usually don't even sit down for dinner until after 7:00. Chat Icon

Re: When do you do homework?

DS starts his homework with the babysitter Mon-Wed and then my husband finishes it with him after dinner (7pm-ish). On Thursdays, he does it all after dinner (closer to 7:30pm). He is in Kindergarten too and only gets about 15-20 minutes worth a night, plus 15 minutes of reading which we do right before bed. He's had homework since the 2nd week of school, so we've gotten into a routine by now.

My kids are 4th and 1st and we do it as soon as we walk in the door (as they eat a snack). If we don't do it this way all he!! breaks loose and there is a lot of fighting later on!

Same here. I find that if I give more than a ten minute break it is much harder to have them sit to do their homework.

When do you do homework?

I find the best time for us in the morning after breakfast. Sometimes it gets a bit hectic with running around but that's definitely her best time. She will work on it while i'm getting her lunch prepped. She's really too wiped out after school and I would rather let her play. Luckily ours is given on Monday and due the following Monday.

Usually after dinner. That way DC have some downtime after school and still have some downtime before bed.

Right after school. That's the only way it will get done.

DD's are in K and we just got our first homework assignment. Today we did it at the kitchen counter while I cooked dinner. I think it worked out well, probably got about 15 minutes done before they lost focus.

Get home - snack, then homework unless they have religion or another activity right after school.

This. When he gets home first thing we do is wash hands then go open the backpack and see what's in it. I have him get his homework pencil and crayons in his drawer in the kitchen and we do the homework. He's also in kindergarten so it's still easy and doesn't take too long. I feel like if I wait it's more of a fight and so far he's been good with this routine. When it gets colder it'll be easier too bc some days it's nice out so I do let him play outside for a bit too.

Re: When do you do homework?

DS does most of his homework during after care but for some reason he leaves his common core math homework for me LOL so the minute he gets home he gets to the table and we do his math homework. i find if we don't do it right away its harder for him to do it.
