I know this is petty but I just really want to be able to go to the pool/beach this summer. Maybe they can limit numbers and space out the chairs more. IDK. I’m accepting no school until the fall but I really want my kids to be able to go to camp and have a summer. Obviously only if it’s safe but I’m hoping.

At the beach I go, there is PLENTY of space to spread out but the issue is people like to sit RIGHT on top of you. I get there super early... like before 8 am on the weekends when it's nice and empty. Within hours they are practically sitting on your blanket with you, meanwhile there is a vast expanse of open beach to all sides of us. I once asked someone sarcastically if they would like to join us because they were setting up their stuff right on top of us. It's just rude. Have some respect of personal space. I was waiting for this guy to grab a drink out of our cooler, he was sitting so close to us.
Anyway- if they enforce some social distancing at the beaches, I'd be ALL for that as a PERMANENT measure.

If they send teachers back a minute before it is absoluetly safe for them to be in close contact with others, they'll see how few teachers they have. With what teachers are paid and how educated and capable they are, asking them to risk their lives because the government is antsy to "move on" with a deadly contagious disease out there.....well, good luck.

I kno wlots of teachers who are immunocomprmised or who live with those who are, or who are elderly. Not willing to sacrifice their lives or those of their loved ones for the economy.

What and who determines when it is "absolutely" safe?
Unless they find something that wipes this virus off the face of the earth permanently- which they won't- it will never be ABSOLUTELY safe.
And that's something that is impossible to determine anyway.

I do not think any schools will reopen until after summer vacation, and by then, it will be safe enough. Unfortunately, as Nell said, it will never be absolutely safe. Schools are breeding grounds for every single gross germ there is. If they waited, the kids would never go back to school. So, safe enough will have to do.
I am a teacher, and I would love to go back before June- just don't see it happening. But if my school opens, I would show up. Just like all of the essential workers are showing up. I would hope teachers would not decide to just not go to work if schools reopen before they deem fit.

Yes my SIL and BIL are both teachers and live quite a lovely life! (Not being sarcastic)

And the economy will be sh*t, so not sure what other job anyone would be able to get if they decided to just up and quit.

I know lots of humans who are immunocompromised or live with elderly. They're working.

If a teacher wants to quit, let them quit. Find a new teacher who wants to teach. There are lots of fabulous teachers out there who want to make a difference in kids' lives even when it's hard.

I'm failing to see a problem.

And schools opening has nothing to do with the economy as you say. Businesses opening back up has to do with the economy.

And what about the cops, firefighers, EMS workers, grocery workers, and health care workers who are working NOW in the height of this? What if they said- nah I quit because it's not ABSOLUTELY safe for me out there?
Then what?

Agreed and most teachers i know are making far more than the grocery cashier or even the nurses that are working right now in the mist of the crisis. If they quit, that's on them. Most that I know would love to be back as soon as they can.

All my teacher friends desperately miss their kids. They also refuse to be on the front lines of another spike because of premature reopening. They want a vaccine or effective early treatment....just like most of us will before we go into crowded rooms and buildings. Saving lives on the front lines is one thing. But stopping distance learning too soon and having people lose their lives is unconscionable. They want to live to teach another day...even if what we need is a year away. I hope it's around the corner....but....I know few people who are going to go back to things as they were until they feel safe.

How do you even keep children out of school for another year? That would mean an entire school year of distance learning, which, IMO, in not an adequate education. An entire school year spent like this would be devastating to our kids. You can't even start Kindergartner's like that, they have never been in real school before. I just think the schools are going to have to open in September.
I read today that Dr. Fauci has even said if we keep up this level of social distancing until June, he can see people being able to go on summer vacations domestically, have BBQ's & backyard gatherings, and having something close to a normal summer. Through all of this, I have taken his word over anyone else's. He isn't God, but his words gave me huge amounts of hope.

Yep. And you know what? If you feel the need to keep yourself quarantined for 18 more months- have at it. Home school your kids. Quit your job.
Stay indoors. Keep it up.
But the majority of the world needs to slowly start back up eventually

Front lines? Grocery store workers, delivery people, healthcare professionals, firefighters, cops- they're on the front lines.

Going into a classroom after the NIH deems school safe is not the front line.

I stand by them quitting if they don't want to return. No other profession lets people decide they don't want to work and still pays them.

Everyone on here is all up in arms about their tax dollars going to those who CAN'T work. I have a problem with my tax dollars going to those do don't WANT to work.

My job can be done remotely. I would just like to see teachers be extended the ability to teach remotely and not have to join he front lines for as long as possible/necessary.

I think that the question of which things reopening and when are premature will only be truly answerable in hindsight. And some of these discussions may not age well, just like some discussions of what was "still safe to do"when it was clear that people should have been quarantining didn't.

That's all.

Why the chip on the shoulder? Why are teachers special and called out? Who said anything about sending teachers in before it was safe?

Why would teachers be unique or special here? No one wants to go to work and be around people/commute until it’s safe.

I just don’t understand the constant victim badge that many teachers grab onto.

I don’t disagree with the sentiment, I just think everyone is in the same boat.

I get what you are saying, but I feel that school will eventually be necessary. It would be a huge tragedy for our children to miss school going into the new school year. The repercussions of something like that would be felt for years.
I think that large gatherings, such as concerts/sporting events/etc, may be held off for a year. But not something as necessary as school, and not a majority of small businesses. This current climate is not sustainable for much longer. I do not know where people get 12-18 months being acceptable from. We would resemble a third world country.
I think the doom and gloom from people (and not you, just in general) stresses me out more than the virus and the quarantine itself.

Guaranteed, this person is probably a teacher or married to one.

Kids education is very important also. This homeschooling/remote learning is not beneficial to the kids. Easy for teachers to complain about going back to work and being in harm's when they are getting paid. Chat Icon

The curve is already plateauing. We will never have 0% risk. The benefits need to outweigh the risks. I can live without the pool, beach, camp. BUT NOT SCHOOL!

Being off until the fall is not acceptable. Besides, what happens if there is a second wave? By June 1st, Birx' model shows the curve will have reached a very low level.

I hope to God the governor opens the schools. I think he understands the importance they hold, despite the teachers and their unions. Chat Icon

Not a teacher. My husband either. We are very lucky to be able to work from home for as long as we need. Just a fan of teachers and a believer that unlike some others, they can do what they do from a dustance.

Also a believer that as long as kids are gathered in schools, they will bring the virus home to the most vulnerable among us. So, not a fan of schools being reopened until there is a vaccine or an effective early treatment

Fine with those who disagree We will all have to make these choices for ourselves and our kids. I realize that I am very lucky, I would like to see as many people as can be given the grace to join me in working remotely and not being caught up in the next wave/spike .

I have had friends affected by the virus. Even the "mild" cases sound largely terrifying and harrowing. Long term effects and the length of immunity not yet known, Lots of inconvenient truths. Not here to fight. Wishing everyone the absolute best.

The virus will not disappear, and will probably be with us for a very long time maybe even mutate like flus do and we will need a vaccine. However, the new normal will be far different than the normal we remember. There will be tons of restrictions on places that do open and it will be like that till 2021 when a vaccine is developed. Hospitals also have to be preety much ready for the next batch of patients as well till anything opens.

I really, really hope this wraps up by the end of May. I know I am in the minority but I really want to see the kids go back to school. Even if it is just for a week. I feel so bad for the seniors graduating and even younger "graduates". They are missing so much and don't get to say a proper goodbye otherwise. And that is said for all the grades too. My kids love their current teachers and what a bummer it is to just have such an abrupt ending.

Also, if schools don't open, will camps? What happens when non-essential workers have to go back to work and there are no child care options? There's so much uncertainty right now.

As far as social distancing itself, I think that people are going to avoid contact and large gatherings for quite some time.
