Don't be surprised if the curve goes back up within the next two weeks because of all the "Idontgivea$hits" that celebrated the Passover/Easter Holidays with outside family.
Wouldnt be surprised.
But unless those people were sick, they wouldn't be spreading anything, right? I mean, to get others sick, they would need to be sneezing and coughing their infected droplets all over. If no one was sneezing and coughing, there is hope.
I don't know of anyone that had get togethers on Easter. No one in my realm of friends shared that on social media. Maybe they did and didn't share, who knows.
Actually, no. And that is the part that people do not realize.
Anyone who does have the virus; doesn't necessarily have to have ANY symptoms and still spread it to someone else.
I still don't understand what people are not getting about this. Do they need to be hit over the head. And yes, people did Easter gatherings...my mom's neighbors had their son, daughter in law and BABY over. Inside the house. My mom says she sees them go over most days. And as for the not sneezing comment, I don't know where you are getting your facts, not even getting into that, but I like a lot of people, suffer from allergies. I sneeze and cough all the time.
Relax with your nasty comments. I get it, I understand that it CAN be spread by people who have no symptoms. My point was, germs get spread through droplets from people coughing and sneezing. So if people are together and NOT coughing or sneezing (not everyone has allergies FYI), then how exactly are they going to get sick? Because disease just doesn't get expelled from breathing, like I said. IF they did, then millions upon millions in NYC alone would be infected right now. Viruses don't get transferred from skin. I'm not an idiot. I get how it works. I'm NOT condoning people getting together in ANY way, whatsoever. My point was, just because people DID get together, doesn't mean we will see this HUGE UPTICK like people are saying, 2 weeks from now. People would rather just be nasty and negative ALL the time. It's getting old. I digress though.
Because you don't have to cough or sneeze just to spread droplets. It is how your saliva is spread which can be a hundred different scenarios. Using same utensil, touching your face, wiping your mouth with your hand or napkin; then touching an object, then someone else touches that same object; then that person touches their face somehow; and bingo, its spread. People do this more than they realize. People blowing their nose and not washing their hands after. Still fluids being spread.
Even someone smoking a cigarette; and blowing out the smoke. There are droplets of saliva in the exhale.
Point is the virus can be spread to an object and live on it for hours to days until the next victim touches it; and infects themselves say by touching their face somehow someway.
It is and can be spread so easily; and I do think so many do not realize that!
Stop with your common sense!

Re: When do you think we will Social Distancing be done
Yes it is very contagious and yes people will die and yes it is devastating on many levels. But I think that at some point people are going to start facing reality that we cannot hide in our homes until a vaccine is ready in maybe a year or more. The virus will not disappear by social distancing no matter how long we do it. The scary truth is that the only way to get it done is to slowly gain herd immunity, meaning more people must be exposed to it. We are going to have to start to learn how to live with this virus by easing the restrictions, and it is going to have to happen sooner rather than later. You cannot shut down a country indefinitely because (1) the economy will not withstand it, and (2) people just won't do it. And I'm not talking about the stock market and I'm not putting money over lives but again, the reality is that in only a month 17 million people have already lost their jobs/businesses/livelihoods and $1200 is only going to pay so many bills for so long. We cannot ignore that. I think if Cuomo had his way we would be hiding under the bed until Christmas but realistically by June we are going to have to start going back to work (to the extent certain businesses survived). And at some point kids will have to return to school - even if that is September - for many reasons. We have to remember that the virus is deadly but it is not a death sentence - more than 80% of people get through it and recover. I know this is all a very unpopular opinion that people will hate. But I think if we eased into living life again - no huge gatherings, people wearing masks at work, maybe not having 100% of workforce every day, continue with the hand washing, less seating at restaurants....I think it could be done.

I agree with this entirely. What we are asking of ppl is too much to sustain for much longer. People will stop doing it. I am alone with 3 kids, I haven’t seen my boyfriend in 6 weeks,or my mother, my sister, my friends. I’m happy to hunker down for another 3 weeks but then I think we really need to ease restrictions. It is against human nature to be alone. Hell in the 80s and 90s all we asked of people to curb an epidemic was to use a condom, and we couldn’t even get everyone to do that and reached a point where 1 percent of the US population had HIV. Now we are asking ppl to forsake all human contact with anyone outside their home indefinitely, homeschool their children, while working themselves, OR losing their jobs, businesses, livelihoods...people are not going to be able to maintain this for much longer. There will be food shortages, looting, civil unrest. These things are not better than a virus. I say this as someone who hasn’t left the house since March 20th bc I feel that we are doing is warranted and prudent and thank God it has proven to be effective. But what it isn’t, for better or worse, is sustainable.

When do you think we will Social Distancing be done
So for those who want to get back to business.....how do you suggest we do that when my cubicle is less than 6 feet apart from the people that sit around me?
How do you send your child to school everyday knowing they may end up getting the virus and could potentially get very sick or spread it to others?
But I guess it's okay because theres only a 20 percent chance that they may die.

I don't think anyone thinks we should get back to business tomorrow- or even next month. But, by June, yes, we will have to start lifting some things. Cuomo said himself this is not sustainable long term. I think people are questioning those who want complete lock downs until a vaccine. The entire world would collapse in on itself. I think it is very easy for people to say they could live like this for 18 months- because it has been 1 month. The country can't just reopen. But, at some point, and that point is coming, we are going to have to try to find a balance. This is not an all or nothing situation.

No death rate is not 20 percent I mean a large amount of population are not able to get tested Including health care workers - told to stay home until there is no fever But no one wants to formally test them And countless others who are not sick enough to warrant hospitalization
unless you are so short of breath that u need oxygen, most of the population has not been getting enough tests
And kids have the lowest mortality
Unfortunately the elderly are dying

My post was confusing, what I meant was that over 80% resolve at home without serious complications and without hospitalization. But the death rate I believe is 1% or less. Yes still too many and still too tragic but you can't deny that many other problems will result from putting people on house arrest for a year. It's all well and good for the politicians who are still collecting a paycheck but I personally know many people who are now terrified of how they are going to survive, not to mention people who cannot see doctors or get treatment for other serious diseases right now. Companies will need to make some temporary adjustments if their current configuration has people sitting on top of each other. If school opens then yes I would send my kids. There are dangers, diseases and other hazards everywhere, every day.

Sorry Nell but a pp mentioned something about 80 % of people recovering. I have no idea what the actual percentage is but I just feel like some people are just so quick to be sending their kids back to school and getting back to business.
I get how hard it is to be staying home everyday, trust me ask my husband how crazy I have been since this started but I wouldn't just risk a family getting this so we can rush to get back to normal.

I agree. Children also seem to be the least affected Yes, they can carry it to others. Perhaps something to look at when we start to ease restrictions is extending the distancing for the most vulnerable

I definitely hear you and respect your feelings. Many of my friends and family feel this way. But that is your choice - if you do not feel comfortable, stay home.
For me, it has nothing to do with it being "hard" to stay home. I like my house and my family. My point is that this country has 300 million people and right now we are quarantining all of them (mostly healthy people) for an indefinite time which will ultimately have far worse consequences than the virus.

80% of people recover at home without medical intervention. ~16-17% recover in the hospital with medical intervention. 3-4% die. I think the stats are poorly worded in many sources.
ETA the most recent death rate I've seen for the US overall is 3.4%. In NYC its 4.7%.

When do you think we will Social Distancing be done
I’m curious as to why some people are saying they’re too afraid to send their kids back to school if they do reopen in May or June. There seems to be such a tiny risk to children, I’m sure they’re much more likely to be killed on the way to school. Unless you live with a elderly or immunocompromised family member, why are you so afraid for your kids to go to school?

I already posted I didnt know what the actual numbers were. Either way we still have over 2k people dying a day. So yea not going to work in an office and i def wouldnt be sending my kid back to school anytime soon when it would be extremely difficult to distance yourself

Totally agree.
I also feel this time and the extra 2 weeks to a month more we stay in, the better off the hospitals will be. They know more, have more meds to help treat it, they'll actually be a bed if you DO get really sick and need one. It won’t just go away. Until there’s a proven vaccine, people will continue to contract this virus. But the difference will (hopefully) be that we know how to treat it to have the best outcome.

I swear my daughter had it before this whole thing blew up. In late Feb into mid March she had a minor head cold that ended up with a lingering dry cough that went on for weeks. No fever, felt fine otherwise...I hear in kids that's pretty much how it presents. God knows how many of them were passing it around before schools closed

I did find this article https://www.businessinsider.com/coronavirus-death-age-older-people-higher-risk-2020-2?r=DE&IR=T that goes by death rates among age groups. BUUUUUT that is based on a Chinese study and I think their numbers are very skewed- especially with reports of thousands more urns than dead and they analyzed the numbers of how many cremation ovens were working.
Also France isn’t counting death rates in care homes. I believe that Italy has the most accurate rates.

Yes I think a lot of people had it without realizing it. Both of my kids were sick right after Martin Luther King Day for the week. Then I got sick toward the end of that week. I remember feeling extremely tired and had low grade fever. I tested negative for flu.

Agree!!!

The disease is also too new for them to definitively say that if you had the disease and recovered, you're 100% immune (and if you are, for how long?) I think that is the main thing we need answered. If we are able to create herd immunity, and having antibodies in your system mean you are immune, and the test for that are available and accurate (right now, they are neither), we can definitely start letting people out of quarantine.
One thing we don't want, is to have quarantine lifted, and a 2nd wave comes through because people are getting sick a 2nd time.
And what happens if it's like Chicken Pox and Shingles? What if you recover the first time, but the 2nd time it's much worse?

Totally agree.
I also feel this time and the extra 2 weeks to a month more we stay in, the better off the hospitals will be. They know more, have more meds to help treat it, they'll actually be a bed if you DO get really sick and need one. It won’t just go away. Until there’s a proven vaccine, people will continue to contract this virus. But the difference will (hopefully) be that we know how to treat it to have the best outcome.
I was reading an article in The Atlantic this morning that talked in part about how we are running out of the most important medications to treat it (and I'm not just talking about the unproven hydroxychloroquine). And it's not just a matter of buying more, it's making the chemicals that comprise these medications which takes time and is often done in other countries. Scary stuff.

I am on a Facebook page for local moms. Someone posted the other day that she tested positive on February 5th, and then again last week, after testing negative in March. Not sure how much of her story I believe though. Was the US even testing back in early February? Not even Italy had seen there first case at that point. I know people who have been very sick, and were still unable to get tested. Yet she got tested 3 times in a 2 month period? It just seemed off. But, if she is telling the truth, than that means you can get it again. Which is terrifying.
