Um, I saw the ring I wanted and said, "So, you can buy that for me whenever you feel like it."  OK, I DID do that, however, he had already told me the Christmas prior that I should expect a ring for the next Christmas.

We knew we were going to marry each other, I didn't threaten or hint it just happened. Was I surprised? Yes, that night I was surprised, but I knew it would happen eventually.

We talked about marriage, and he suggested looking at rings together. It was much easier to look together than for him to try to arrange a time to drive down and look at rings with my best friend. We knew we weren't getting engaged any time soon. We didn't want a very long engagement and I didn't want to plan a wedding while studying for the bar. We looked at rings and he proposed 1 year later. I knew the proposal was coming at some point, but I didn't know when. I also didn't know he kept the ring in his sock drawer for 1 year. I'm glad I never went into his dresser.

Similar for us. I knew it was going to happen eventually so I never really worried about it. I never had to threaten or hint but I did talk about our future together as did he. It was sooner then I had initially expected but it wasn't a total surprise since DH isn't a good liar and I knew something was up.

This is how it happened with me too... It was my bday and DH had asked for my parents "permission" days before. He took me to this really nice Italian restaurant and set it up w/ the maitre 'd to bring over a single rose w/ a ribbon after dessert. Inside the ribbon was the ring. DH got down on one knee and proposed. I was crying.. totally shocked and said yes and then the whole restaurant started applauding. Since it was my bday and we had plans to go out later, everyone celebrated with us! It was one of the best days ever....

I once told him I would never give him an ultimatum, I would just leave. I never pushed him, but he noticed that I was getting a little fed up and took me ring shopping one day. We were "just looking" but he surprised me with the ring he bought behind my back.

I knew it was coming once we talked about it.
He would have asked me sooner but he was separated for years and thought it wasn't appropriate until he got the divorce papers back. We were dating for a little over a year, papers came back and he then bought the ring. He waited another two months until he could propose in Italy. I knew it was Italy but thought it would be much later in the trip. Yes, I was surprised.

My SIL gave my BIL an Ultimatum to propose within the next two weeks " or else" ( they were not even dating for 2 years so It wasn't that my BIL was procrastinating) Even though he had his own timeline that he wanted to do it by, he felt rushed and ran out and bought a ring to keep peace. I love when I hear her telling everyone what a huge surprise it was

He started talking about marriage pretty early on, so no pressure was needed on my part! I was pretty sure I knew when he was going to propose, and I was right, although I got the location wrong. I was expecting it at the restaurant we were going to, but he proposed before that, in the middle of a museum in front of about 50 tourists 
He got me good!

She must have been so shocked! 
2 weeks? That's ridiculous! I can understand if someone is dating a long time and you talk about it and say, we need to move forward and commit or, blah blah, but to give the guy 2 weeks is a little ridiculous.
I teased my FH about it from day 1. We were dating about a year when that ad came out for Debeers and it was "What are you waiting for, the year 3000?" so I used to say that to him a lot. We were in HS at the time, so it was a complete joke. In college, I used to joke about how I was floating away and I needed a rock to keep me weighed down. It was all in jest and it was fun (that was my hinting) but we did talk about when it would happen and our timeline, etc. At the time FH did propose if he didn't propose then or within I'd say a year of then, I would have gotten pretty antsy about it, wondering when, why not, and if he was serious.

I picked out my ring with him. He would have no clue as to what to buy. I loved how he did it though that was a surprise but I knew it was happening because he was fiddling with his pocket all night.  I also had to tell him to twll my oparents he was asking me and he did that in front of me .

We were sort of talking about it (we were living together), I expected something in the summer or my birthday(October) and he totally surprised me in January in Key West!!
