Re: When looking to buy a home...did you have to stay close to grandparents so they could watch your DC?
we didn't have to and I really didn't want to, but we are 5 minutes from my parents. It has really been great (they don't do pop-ins thank goodness!)
when the kids are sick, they can pick them up or watch them for the day. Now that DS is starting kindergarten and we are in the same district, I'm loving that DS can take the bus there on days I have late meetings.
I like the idea so much, we are 80% likely to stay in our district.
DH and I could do all of this ourselves (DH works from home), but it has definitely helped out.

No. We wound up buying about 20-30 minutes away. We live in Eastern Nassau, they live in Northeast Queens. It never really came up because my parents bought a home in Las Vegas about 6 years ago and eventually they will move out there full time.

Yes we turned down areas and houses that were too far from my parents since they would be helping out with kids sometimes. I have no regrets because the convenience is SO worth it. It would have been super hard to travel more than 10 minutes out of my way early in the morning or after work.

My parents live in LI .... We are currently TTC and considered moving to NJ but ultimately chose LI to be closer to my parents.

Re: When looking to buy a home...did you have to stay close to grandparents so they could watch your DC?
No.
Our first home we bought we didn't even consider the area (same as my parents) but the RE wanted to show it, so for the heck of it we did. We ended up buying it and were 10 minutes from my parents and siblings. We were in the same town just opposite ends. We ended up having our first child there and lived there up until DS was 13 months. I was/am a SAHM so I didn't need babysitting durning the day but even if I was a working mom, both my parents worked so I couldn't depend on them. Even on the weekends they really didn't watch him much.
2.5 years ago we moved from LI to NJ and my parents still work and still rarely watch them.
I think it is nice to be close to parents to help out but I would also hate if they felt like they were always obligated to watch my kids.

No. I knew they would be useless. I know it sounds mean but they are more into saying they are grandparents to their friends than actually being grandparents.

Re: When looking to buy a home...did you have to stay close to grandparents so they could watch your DC?
yes!!! 100%! (for us)
we both work and my mom is laid off. she watched DS and will also watch DD when i go back to work. she comes to my house so my kids don't have wake up early. it works for us and we save $$$$ on daycare.
