When to expect a call back?

OK I know school has not yet started, but in the spring, I was advised by the Director of CPSE to call the school psychologist and give her the heads up on the Cohen's diagnosis.

I left a message last week and again yesterday introducing myself, DS name, teacher and to please call me about so,e issues going on before school starts.

DS will be starting out the year with no services in place, and it's going to be a long day for him now in K.

He will be starting pre care at 7am and school goes from 9-3:15.

His behaviors start to come out around lunch when he's exhausted.

Any advice?

P.S. Do you think I should reach out to the teacher or social worker? I don't want to raise a red flag if things may be fine, but I don't want him labeled a problem child either, and I'm following what was recommended....

Maybe she is not in until next week when school starts? If it makes you feel better then I would just get in touch with anyone else you can- either the social worker and teacher and give them the heads up as well.

He has no services at all? Did they release you at CPSE? The The special ed department has their hands full right now getting all the children ready with their schedules with IEPS and 504s and unless you formally requested evaluations, I wouldn't think they would get back to you until after school starts.

Regardless of my DD's diagnosis, I always send a note to her teacher at the beginning of the year, listing her strengths and weaknesses, her issues and triggers. Basically, I just want her to be aware of who my daughter is and the background may be helpful to the teacher during the day if something arises. Good luck : ).

Re: When to expect a call back?

He has no services this year.

CPSE graduated him out of everything and said basically we need to wait to see how he does in Kindergarten, before starting the process again through the next level.

He saw his Dev Ped a few weeks ago and did not sit still at all.....at one point he was climbing across her desk practically.

This is him everywhere.

She had me schedule his next appt for early fall because she expects I may hear by then about his behavior.

Re: When to expect a call back?

They will all be back to school by 9/2. The 1st week is crazy though so you might want to call the psychologist the 2nd week. On the 1st day though, I would write a long note to his classroom teacher introducing yourself and sharing your DS's history and the results of the Cohens Evals. I would also tell her that you plan to touch based with the building psychologist. I would also share any strategies and suggestions that you and his preschool teachers found that works for him to help him focus and attend in order to learn and function within a school environment. Also tell the teacher to call /email to let you know how he is doing.

He probably will need environmental modifications, behavioral modifications and sensory strategies. If he has trouble with social skills and trouble with his feeling etc... You can contact the building social worker, often there are building level supports students can participate in without needing an IEP. You can also touch base with the OT for "brain breaks" sensory activities for the classroom. Move n' sit cushions are great to promote in seat attention. He would need the junior size (Fun and Function has the best prices). You might want to buy one, label it and send it into school. I am a school based OT and I work with many students and teachers regarding attention, sensory and behavior in the classroom setting. They is a lot that can be done to make sure he has a successful school year. He doesn't even need an IEP for any of it....

Thank you so much, this is really helpful.

Yeah, I was guessing that it's probably crazy for the first couple of weeks and I wasn't even sure if support staff were required to be in the building this early.

I don't want to come off as "that parent" without even knowing anyone yet.

I've had that done to me with some of the adults I work with and it doesn't help the relationship start off on a good foot.
