When to stop working

I am due November 15th with twins. I work in Manhattan but live in Middle Island. It takes me 2 hours door to door each way. I am telling myself I want to work until about 30-32 weeks. Is that realistic? I know every pregnancy is different but I would like some opinions on this. I just cannot imagine doing this commute past 30-32 weeks.

Re: When to stop working

My dr. automatically had me scheduled to stop working at 26 weeks. I ended up being put on bedrest the week before that anyway but that was his plan from the beginning before any complications came up.

I think it depends on your job. I was on my feet all the time when I was working. If you have a desk job I think it would be more realistic that you could work much longer.

I stopped working at 31 weeks before that I was on and off bedrest and had to take a few weeks here and there off. I have a pretty physical job on and off the floor all day and on my feet all day. At 31 weeks the dr was happy with my cervix and was going to let me continue to work but I had pretty bad swelling so they made me stop. I delivered at 33 weeks 6 days

Re: When to stop working

I planned to work till 32 weeks. I stopped at 31 weeks because I got put on bed rest. I had a very long commute as well. Hicksville, LI to Redhook, Brooklyn...ugh

now I'm 34 weeks and still preggo, getting larger and larger. LOL

Re: When to stop working

I was planning on working till the end! Chat Icon I also commute from Ronkonkoma to the city, 2 hrs door to door. I ended up having contractions around 30 weeks and my ffn test came back positive and I got the stomach virus so I was in the hospital getting hydrated. My Dr. said I could work from home but no more commuting. My company let me work from home for a little while, then they hired a freelancer to take over until I come back.

Best thing I ever did! I am currently 36 weeks 3 days and Chat Icon Chat Icon are still in! I will be delivering vaginally whenever they are ready. Ive been 3cm for two weeks and having contractions. I'm not on bed rest but by not commuting I have been able to keep them in longer. You will know when your body reaches the point where it can't take any more!

Re: When to stop working

I worked until the day before my scheduled c-section at 37-weeks, but I was only an hour from home. Two hours would make me nervous.

Re: When to stop working

Thank you for all your advice. I work a desk job so my job is not really demanding. Just the long commute gets me so scared. I cannot imagine something happening on the train home or while I am at work far from DH. Luckily my sister lives close to the city so I could always go to her house after work if I felt anything and she could drive me the rest of the way.

I stopped work at 22 weeks. I was having dizzy spells / feeling faint and it was making it very difficult for me to teach. I started seeing a cardiologist at that time but everything came back fine.

At 24 weeks, my high risk doctor put me on modified bed rest. At 30 weeks, he put me on strict bed rest. I'll be 32 weeks on Sunday and my doctors are very pleased with my progress. Although my cervical length has shortened, it's still above 3 cm. My leg/ankle/feet swelling has gone down as well.

Hang in there and take it easy!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: When to stop working

I live in QUeens os my commute to Manhattan was only 40 minutes but I worked until 36weeks and I delieved my twins at 37w5d. The last month was hard to say the least! I tried to get a ride from whoever I knew and I took the express bus instead of the subway in the end because I couldnt walk up and down the stairs on the subway

Re: When to stop working

I worked until 34.5 weeks at work and only stopped because of pre-term labor. Then I worked from home until the day the twins arrived 36w6d. BUT I only had a 10 minute drive to work. I would have stopped earlier with a 2 hour commute!!

Re: When to stop working

I'll be 21 weeks on Sunday, and I was told to stop working at 16.5 weeks due to bordering on having TTTS. I have a 3 hour a day commute to the city, so they didn't think it would help. It's weird because I really don't have any uncomfortable issues or any other problems, but I still have to lay down as much as I can. I think you and your doctor will know when it's time that you can't work anymore.

Re: When to stop working

I don't have a long commute, but I worked on my feet all day as a high school teacher. I changed rooms a couple of times a day and had to move around the building for my prep period, lunch period, and duty period. At my first appointment, my doc gave me my "schedule." He said that barring complications, modified bed rest at 30 weeks, complete bed rest at 32 weeks. That's what I did. After he delivered my twins (at 38w5d), he told my husband that he thought that the bedrest "schedule" he puts all his twin moms on has helped him dramatically reduce the number of preemies he has had to deliver over the last few years.

My doctor also told me he takes all twin moms out of work at 26 weeks. I was kind of Chat Icon. For me, that's Sept. 1st and it feels like right around the corner. He said he told me upfront so I have time to make arrangements, get paperwork, etc.

He said it is precautionary because the risk of pre-term labor is just too high with twin moms. He said his goal is get his twin moms to 35-36 weeks and by going on modified bed rest at 26 weeks, he said it works.

I should also say I have a desk job and it's 15 minutes away, but he said it doesn't matter.

Same here! I'm a middle school teacher and I was put on modified bedrest at 24 weeks and complete bedrest at 30 weeks. I had to ask my doctor if I could go to a communion and wedding this weekend along with going to a family BBQ for Mother's Day. Since I've been doing well, he told me I could attend all but it's back to the bed and couch on Monday. He thinks I will deliver the twins at 38 weeks (God help me!!)

Happy Mother's Day to all the mommies-to-be!! Chat Icon

Re: When to stop working

I live in Huntington and work in Brooklyn. Long, torturous commute. I wanted to work as long as possible. I sucked it up and commuted until 32 weeks. Fortunately, aside from being exhausted and uncomfortable, I didn't have any concerns about myself or the babies until then, so I was able to make it that far.

At 32 weeks, the fluid around baby A (now known as Georgie!) started to diminish so I worked from home from then until I delivered.

You'll know when you need to stop working!
