When you pass on baby clothes to a friend do you expect something in return?

I am not sure if I am done having kids so I am saving all of my clothes until I know for sure.

My dh's friend has given us a lot of clothes over the past year. (about 2 bags worth plus 6 pairs of shoes). All in great condition. My ds wears only a few items from these bags due to size issues or style. And I just have too much stuff to pick from!!

My dh wants to give his friend a $50 gift card. I told him that his friend doesnt expect anything and that doesn't even make sense because we don't even use $50 worth of stuff we have rec'd.

I always buy on sale and don't buy my ds $$ clothes.

Am I supposed to give them something? I have no issue with a gift card in a lesser amount but more that the value of what I use makes no sense to me!

My dh is overly generous in all situtations so we never agree about this type of thing.

Thoughts?

I would never expect something in return for hand me downs. The way I see it, I spent the money to buy clothes for my kids to wear. They are done wearing it so I got what I paid for already. I am not losing any money by giving the clothes to a friend. And I would ne glad to get the clothes out of my house and to someone who can use them!

I agree.

I also think if someone wanted something, they would just list the clothes on eBay or Craigslist.

I don't expect things when I'm giving away clothes.

But I have gotten gift certificates from people as a thank you, which definitely made me think about giving my stuff to them over someone else. It wasn't so much of the gift but that they appreciated it so much.

Nothing. They gave it to you out of kindness, not to expect repayment.

If you don't mind my asking, how much was the gift card?

No. Maybe just a thank you card through snail mail.

nope. I gave some stuff to coworkers that I knew I wouldn't use was just happy someone could use it...

on the flip side, I just received alot of hand me downs from my coworker(I'm talking 20+ sleepers, plus dresses and outfits AND a nap nanny.... I went to Marshalls and spent under 10 on a picture frame for her cause it was a huge help for me on my second kid to not have to buy that much.

My SIL has given us the equivalent of at least $1k worth of clothes, we have showered her with wine, gifts, and little things here and there as a token of our appreciation.

For a bag or two of clothes? Eh, I think a thank you is sufficient, or maybe a bottle of wine.

A thank you card is really a nice touch.

I was almost embarrassed to get one from a coworker who had a little girl.

I was literally giving him clothes my DD never wore & I had only laundered. I asked him if he could use them to do so, and if not, to pass them along, as they were nice clothes & essentially new. I would feel WORSE if I got a gift card. I felt that I wasn't really giving a "gift", more so giving another life to the clothes.

No, they gave the clothes to you because they wanted to, not because they expect something in return..

My cousin and my friend have given me tons of clothes. I always make sure to spend a little more than I normally would for Xmas or birthday. DH & I keep mentioning that we would like to get them a gift card as a thank you , but we just don't really have the money.

Not at all -
Either I'm going to give it to my friend, or give it to a stranger, or throw in it in the garbage -

While it's a nice 'thank you' gesture, I don't think it's expected at all - at least not by me

I would feel funny receiving a gift card. Like maybe you barely even liked the stuff but then felt obligated to me. I give my sil everything we had for our boys and if I wanted $ for any of it I would have sold it on cl our at a second hand store. Jmo.

Re: When you pass on baby clothes to a friend do you expect something in return?

my SIL gave DH and I huge amounts of my niece's clothing & shoes. everything is excellent condition if not new.

they didn't expect anything but I bought my niece and my nephew (SIL was pregnant same time as me but having a boy) new outfits since my niece is always growing and they didn't have anything for a boy.

Also gave them bunch of diapers and are still giving them diapers (today almost a whole costco case) since my LO is always a size ahead of my nephew even though she is three weeks younger Chat Icon

to answer your question - it's always nice to do a little something in return but i wouldn't ever expect to get anything from passing on itesm i didn't need

Re: When you pass on baby clothes to a friend do you expect something in return?

i haven't, no. I don't think it's necessary and truth be told if i gave someone clothes, i'd feel weird about taking a gift card from them.

Totally not needed IMO.

I would not expect anything in return if I gave the hand me downs.....
I received a toddler bike and a changing table from two different co workers. The didn't expect anything in return but both items were greatly appreciated so I bought a gift for their children as a thank you.
