when your water breaks or you suddenly go into labor, do you think you will rush to the hospital or labor at home?
i feel like part of me wants to stay home for the first few hours but then again, i would be worried that i waited too long would end up having a baby in the back seat
will you rush to the hospital or wait it out a little bit?

i plan on laboring at home as long as possible... even with traffic, the longest it would take for us to get to the hospital is about 25 minutes, so i am really not worried.

I thought I would stick it out at home...yeah, no...I went running to the hospital!
I will say however, that my contractions went from 0-60 in intensity very quickly but I waited the 1 hour until the contractions were 3-5 min. apart. After that, I went running...

If my water breaks I will go straight to the hospital because I do not want to get infected. If I am just having contractions, I stay home for awhile & go to the hospital when It becomes too painful or uncomfortable.

Re: when your water breaks or you suddenly go into labor, do you think you will rush to the hospital or labor at home?
My doctor wants me to follow the 5-1-1 rule.
Contractions 5 minutes apart for 1 hour and they last for 1 minute.
If I head to the hospital right away I'll be sitting in Labor and delivery testing and triage. I'll be sitting in there basically doing the same thing I'd be doing at home. IF my water breaks at home I'll head right to the hospital. The hospital is about a 40 minute drive so I want to be able to get to the hospital in plenty of time.

well i know i have a while to go before this occurs. IF my water breaks im sure ill be going to the hospital asap because i think it being my first i might be freaked out and DH just might faint as it is. I would love to labor at home as long as possible but i know if i say im in labor and having contractions my whole family will be rushing and pushing me to go to the hospital. Maybe ill just keep it a secret until its show time. LOL

I plan on waiting if this happens to me. However, I'm a big believer in intuition, and if I have a gut feeling that I need to head to the hospital sooner I will.

Honestly, odds are your water won't break until you get to the hospital. At our childbirth class, the nurse told us that only 11% of women have their water break before they get there. It is not always the first sign of labor. I personally do not know any women who have had their water break at home or when they were out and about. You see it happen more on TV and in the movies than in reality.

This is good to hear because my biggest fear is that my water breaks in the office (I work will all men) or on the subway...i'll be one of those "sick" passengers that everyone loves.

With DD as soon as my water broke we started to get ready and head to the hospital. You're on a clock after your water breaks so you kinda need to get there sooner than later. I did take a shower, make sure my dogs were ok, double checked my bag, and we drove through McD's for my DH all while I was having contractions after my water broke. I wasn't in a rush, but we also did what we need to do and didn't wait around.

Re: when your water breaks or you suddenly go into labor, do you think you will rush to the hospital or labor at home?
My water broke at home after about 12 hours of slow contractions (like one an hour - nothing to complain about). I called the doctor and he told me to wait until my contractions were 5 minutes apart. On cue, my contractions started coming 5 minutes apart so after an hour I went to the hospital. I wound up progressing very quickly and was 7cm when they first checked me. I bumped 2 other ladies waiting to get into a delivery room because I progressed so fast.
Among my RL friends and family who had babies within the last year (about 10 people), only me and one other girl had their water break on its own.

2 of my friends their water broke at home in the middle of the night. One friend's baby came a week early and the other one was a month early. They actually didn't get into labor until they were at the hospital. Both had to be given medication to bring on the labor.

The hospital is literally 2 minutes by car from my house. I will wait it out in the comforts of my own home.

It depends on what the doc says and what the weather is like. I'm due in January. If we're in the middle of a snowstorm, DH will drag me in even if he has to put me on a sled.

I'd like to stay at home but I'm also concerned b/c the hospital is 40 minutes away with no traffic.

Re: when your water breaks or you suddenly go into labor, do you think you will rush to the hospital or labor at home?
FYI: This is the story of my friend:
she was admitted to L&D due to some complication... she was just about to leave (they were sending her home) when her water broke in the bathroom. she decided to stay.
This is what she didn't know: the moment you're admitted, they don't let you eat or drink... only crushed ice.
In the end, she literally didn't eat or drink for 24 hours+ she was famished, thirsty and exhausted.
later on the nurse said: if it were me, I would have kept the water breaking a secret until I had lunch and a lot to drink.... then I would have returned.
that being said, we're 7 min away from SBU hospital, and I'll be laboring at home until the contractions are 5 min apart..... and eating / drinking if I can
as for the infection risk following the water breaking, as long as the water is clear and doesn't have an oder, the risk is low... you have at least 24 hours. just note the time of the water breaking. if it smells or has a color, go to the hospital immediately (myconium)

If my water breaks at home, because I have Strep B, they say get to the hospital asap to get on penicillin ...my other strike against me is that my mom had quick labors with all of her six! children....and guess what...out of the six, I WAS THE ONE BORN IN THE BACKSEAT OF A CAR ....so...I will be running lights to get to the hospital!!!!!

Re: when your water breaks or you suddenly go into labor, do you think you will rush to the hospital or labor at home?
If your water breaks, you are supposed to go to the hospital. When I had DS, my water broke on a Sunday night, but I didn't realize it. I thought it might be my mucus plug. I didn't have it checked until my next appointment, which was Wednesday night. They sent me immediately to the hospital and I was given antibiotics.

Re: when your water breaks or you suddenly go into labor, do you think you will rush to the hospital or labor at home?
DH and I pan to labor at home for as long as possible. However, if the Strep B test comes back positive, dr said we have to go into the hospital for the course of antibiotics, no matter what. I get the results back next week. If Step B is negative, we will stay home till contractions are 5 minutes apart and about 1 minute in length.
