Where can I go to have my convertible car seat installed?
I'm in Medford. Are there places that will do this? Thanks!

Thanks! I actually work pretty close to there. Do you think DD has to be with me to fit it properly?

No, my son wasn't with me but I did make sure the shoulder straps were already at the right height.

I actually have been looking into this and live in Medford as well. I did a search and it said the Brookhaven Town Hall does this but I have yet to call

People are telling me your local police station is supposed to do this as well. Has anyone tried this?

This isn't 100% true. SOME police stations MAY have an officer who is certified in car seat installation. But not all will/do. It is best to get a certified installer to put the car seat in. They can show you how and answer any questions you may have. If the person installing is not certified then it isn't necessarily going to be any better then you doing it yourself. You can look up a certified installer here (sorry i can't direct link from my phone)

Do you have a reasonably new car with LATCH? If so... You click in 2 belts for an infant seat and tighten. No brainer. Convertible is the same, but you attach the top too (with a hook). It really, honestly is super simple.

Yes it's absolutely that simple but there are a lot of other factors. For example, the seat at is not supposed to move more then 1 inch in any direction when installed. Infant seats when installed rear facing should be angled between 30 and 45 degrees. When RF the front seat should not touch the car seat. A certified installer will also talk about proper placement of the chest clip and the proper way to have the harnesses adjusted. They should also talk about where the harnesses should be threaded for both RF and FF. They can answer any questions a first time parent may have.
I am not an installer (although I would like to take the course to become one) I just take car seat safety very seriously and cringe when I see pictures on facebook of children not properly restrained. Do i do it all by the book. .. no. I have a mirror so I can see DD2 but it is one that attaches to the teather strap. I have toys on the infant carrier as well. But my DS never wears a heavy coat in the winter and he was RF until 26 months.
I'm not "attacking" you personally. I just feel that 1st time (and sometimes not 1st time) parents should have their seats installed at least for the first time, by a certified installer.

i had done this when I needed my infant seat installed, and pretty much all the ones I called that were on the list, didn't even do it. like brookhaven town & state police for example.
I was pregnant when I had the infant seat installed (obv) so I didn't have dd with me, he just put the straps on the lowest level. I think I am going to bring dd with me when I do the convertible seat, so I can make sure they fit properly.

This should give updated accurate information.
As far as the straps, when RF they should be coming out of the seat ATor BELOW shoulder level. When FF they should come out of the seat AT or ABOVE shoulder level.
When adjusting the steps the chest clip should be positioned at nipple level. Straps should be tightened so there is no slack to be pinched. Typically you should be able to have one finger for behind the chest clip.

this is the website I went to last time... brookhaven town is still on the list - i'll give them a call, but 8-9 months ago they weren't doing it. i'm in port jeff station and if I enter my zip code, 99% of what comes up is as far east as the hamptons... or conneticut.

Riverhead Police do it, I worked an event with them and they were great.
Hassel does it, again they're great. Hassel is also where they do the training for SafeKids and where I took my classes. You can contact SafeKids Suffolk which is out of StonyBrook and see if they are having any checks, but most of the time they refer folks to Hassel.
