I have so many intellectuals living on my block I'm starting to feel I inferior...
Me too! Just yesterday I had an amazingly stimulating conversation with my neighbor about the benefits of using Preparation H for undereye circles!
And I don't live in no high falutin' area!

Wait, were we not supposed to answer the question & only mock the OP? If so, I missed that.
I grew up in Uniondale, so I am not mentally eqiupped to answer that kind of difficult question.
And clearly you lack the comprehension to quote properly.
Hey Admin, Can we get a tutorial for quoting?
I had to go back and add that!
Hooked on phonics worked for me!

Re: Where do the smart people live?
Sorry your being attacked/mocked. I know exactly what your asking, although it may not be expressed with the right terms. I have family in the Boston area, who are all professors in some of the big Universities, and I totally get what you are saying. Unfortunately, you will not find that on LI, but I agree in what others have said in that you may have to find groups related to your interests and go from there. Good Luck!

Re: Where do the smart people live?
I cant think of any place like that on long island. St. Brook could come close but it is the congregating outside the university that you're seeking and St. Brook really doesnt offer that.
Many professors have subsidy housing around Dowling in Oakdale, but there really is no common place that they would go to after hours.
The only place I have gone to that is like you describe is Charlottesville, VA.

Where do the smart people live?
Sorry people are attacking ( per the norm on here) I know exactly what you mean. I don't think it exists in long island. I'd live in Manhattan, Dc, Boston or the Nc triangle area to get what you are looking for. I'm sure here are other places but that is what comes to mind.

Re: Where do the smart people live?
Coming on here and asking that was not the best idea because soon as you narrow it down to an area, you've basically said all the other places on LI are where the average people or idiots live.
I went to college in Boston for 2 of my undergrad years (and visited often while DH was in pharmacy school there) and while I see there is a difference from NY to Boston, I don't think it has anything to do with intellectualism, but more a lot of the Bostonians I ran into seemed very uppity. So not necessarily smarter or more intellectual, but less diverse and had an uppity attitude (2 of many reasons I hate Boston).
Also, I don't think just being around professors is going to make you smarter I guess it depends on what you mean by 'smart' also.
So many layers and answers to this question, but I don't have the time...back to writing my dissertation in idiot-ville

I agree with this line of thinking as well. Silly me, thinking diversity was a GOOD thing!

Oh, I forgot to add. Your implication that smart people don't exist in lower-income neighborhoods...
That's some thin ice you're skating on

Re: Where do the smart people live?
Another thought...
While I think NYC is very diverse (a lot more so than Boston), I think Long Island is diverse but also very segregated. I have some family that lives on LI and growing up we visited a lot and it never occurred to me because I'm a minority. But now that I'm older, I've met many people from LI who have never tried different kinds of food, have friends from other races/ethnicities, traveled outside of the country (or comfort zone). That always surprised me...I tended to think that downstate is diverse, but the city is a lot more diverse than LI IMO.

Clearly. You spelled genius incorrectly.
Did anyone else giggle at the irony to this?
And since I'm so simple minded and apparently a bully who was picked on all my life - THANK YOU for knowing me and my childhood SO well! - might you enlighten the rest of us bullying dolts with what the OP was "trying" to ask since apparently I'm not understanding?
Oh and might you care to explain the quotes around the word trying, since she, in fact, DID ask the question.
Many thanks!

Where do the smart people live?
Thank you to everyone who tried to give me a real response-- sorry to anyone who misunderstood my intentions. I used the words "in general" pretty clearly... I come from a low-income area myself and of course there are intelligent people who come from everywhere-- it's just that IN GENERAL, those places have less emphasis on education.
Sorry I became such an easy target for people to laugh at. I'm just trying to find a place where it feels like I can fit in.

I'm guessing you crossed "LIF" off the list of possible places today?
In all seriousness, there is no academic/intellectual hotspot like you're envisioning, here on LI. Even the "college towns" like Stony Brook don't have what you're looking for. Like others have said, the best way to satisfy that need is to create your own community of friends/acquaintances who are like-minded. Meetup groups, library programs, lectures, volunteer work-- I think you'll find interesting people you can have deep discussions with at any of these.

LOL. Well... kinda. But I have heard from a few people who are checking on me, so I appreciate that!

Many thanks! Well I'd would rather have common sense and be respectful to others that are looking for help then sit behind a computer judging them. If you aren't here to help someone then find something better to do with your time It's pretty pathetic. I come on here to kill time at work and maybe learn something new..and all I've learned from this site is that there are a bunch of prententious assholes on it...and I'm still sticking with my original assumption

Where do the smart people live?
A town with that houses a lot of Navy guys. They went to Naval Academy and became doctors-smart enough to go through schooling while someone paid them to rather then take out loans.

Re: Where do the smart people live?
Oh jeeze - are we LOOKING for things to be insulted about today?
Really? You don't understand what the OP's intent is? She's looking to surround herself with a certain level of intellect because it's what SHE wants for herself .......she's not saying anyone is stupid or beneath her ......she's looking for a group of people who share a common interest ......
Unfortunately, I don't think any particular 'area' is going to do that for you on Long Island - You need to be in a big city to be close to that cultural/historical outlet .......You probably felt the way you did in college, because, well, you were IN COLLEGE regardless of whether you were in Boston or Miami of NYC or the middle of nowhere .....you were on a college campus where everyone was there for the same reason - to learn. It was a concentrated environment. KWIM? What about maybe taking a class ?

Re: Where do the smart people live?
While there are no towns that give off that Boston vibe (and I know exactly what you mean having gone to Boston many times and it being one of my favorite places), there are some towns that may be more to your liking than others, when it comes to LI.

Re: Where do the smart people live?
You are correct. If you look at the demographics of a town - generally the lower the income the less educated. Of course, that doesn't mean that everyone in that town is uneducated. A college degree is not the only way to define smart but honestly I don't think you were implying either.
DH and I just went to Boston this past August for the 1st time as adults. We LOVED it! I don't think there is anything on LI that is similar. Someone said Huntington Village and I agree that there is a great feel to the area - maybe thay would work for you?

Re: Where do the smart people live?
This website gives a good overview of many towns: http://www.city-data.com/
It gives breakdowns of the income, education level and the types of jobs held by the people living in the area. I have found it very helpful during my house hunt.
I have found getting involved in local activities has helped me to find like minded people. I would suggest looking for clubs, etc. that suit your interests.

Re: Where do the smart people live?
I grew up in a household where my parents constantly had this wide variety of characters coming by.. intellectuals, artists, politicos. It was so much fun listening to them. They'd talk, argue, engage and the subject matter was so varied.. education, foreign policy, television, art, pop culture, etc.. People would just kind of show up randomly.. they'd sometimes play poker or bring instruments and kind of jam with each other. I always thought *my* house would be like that. And it's usually not but I say all the time that I need to cultivate that kind of environment for my kids because I learned SO much and was exposed to so many different opinions and topics when I was young that it really stimulated my curiousity and desire to learn.
Is that kind of what you are looking for?
If so, what I learned in trying to recreate that atmosphere is that it's more about how much you put in to cultivate it. A lot of my parents friends and relatives were NOT educated.. but they were thinkers and doers and passionate about their opinions and creative in their expression. I have found that the best conversations I have happen when the people I gather are super diverse and all interesting. It's possible that your key error is in trying to match intellect and ability to communicate in a compelling, passionate way to education level or financial status?
FWIW.. I grew up in Bay Shore which I know is often considered a 'bad town' and not necessarily a hotbed of intellect.. but my parents still managed to pull together a good cast of characters from all over.
I guess I am one of those of the mind that says you should just start throwing spaghetti at the wall wherever you are currently. I think there's lots of dynamic and interesting people all over the place and I think you'll find them just by putting yourself out there!
Good luck!
