We moved in in Oct. 2006 and we are nowhere near halfway done. Esp. since we do 99% of the work ourselves and we both work fulltime.

spent alot of money in a short period of time, unfortunately, using hired contractors and landscapers and ordering things online.
most of my house is as done as it can be for my budget, so i am satisfied.
took about 3 years but the bulk of the work was done in year 1
Same for us.
We bought in April of 07 and I would say I did everything within the first year. In fact I was ordering things online before even being in the house. Unfortunately, I am way too compulsive to wait. But you attend to what's the most important first.

we dont- we try to do one thing at a time, and save a little to work on the next project. Everything takes a long time to do- its a PIA.
