Where will you be doing solar eclipse?
I took the day off and will be home after an appointment. My kids are gone this week. So i guess pretty uneventful for me. I dont have viewing glasses anyway.

At work. Have absolutely no interest anyway. I'm sure I'll see pics later.

Re: Where will you be doing solar eclipse?
I'm at work and not interested in going blind. Those glasses look like the old 3D glasses you'd get in a box of cereal. I'm not trusting my eyesight to those things. I'm shutting the shades in my office this afternoon. And I told DH I want my daughter in the house all afternoon. It scares the crap out of me to be honest.
Can't wait for it to be over to be honest. Done with the hype

Where will you be doing solar eclipse?
I have a question....is it dangerous to be outside during it? Like, do what you normally would do? Usually I walk around outside during lunch, is that a bad idea today? If you don't look up is it ok?

Where will you be doing solar eclipse?
Working in Midtown. This is not my first time seeing one. I remember all the hoopla when I was living in the Midwest - we made the viewing boxes and everything.

It is not dangerous to be outside, doing what you would normally do. It is only dangerous to look at the sun - just as it would be on any other day.
I will be at work, but will be going outside periodically to view the eclipse with the glasses I got

I wanted to go to our library's event since they have glasses but somehow I didn't register in time. I don't want to go be in a big crowd and not even get glasses. My mom made some cereal box viewers so we'll probably go use those.

I'm showing this to DH! I'm staying in with the kids between 12:30 and 4:00, and he thinks I'm nuts. My DS would 100% look at the sun if I told him not to...not worth it to me.

Today is no different than any other day. Never look at the sun unprotected on any day, just like today. The only "danger" is that since it will be darker during the eclipse, people may be tempted to look at the sun unprotected.
During the eclipse, it will be like an overcast day.
The moon blocking most of the sun is the equivalent to standing under a tree or by a building that is blocking most of the sun. There's less overall light shining on you, but you still can't stare at the sun.

No it's fine to be outside, just don't look up and stare at whatever is going on with the sun. I just can't trust my daughter not to.

It annoys me that it's going to get overcast. It's so nice and sunny today!

Where will you be doing solar eclipse?
There's another total solar eclipse in 2024 so I'm kinda surprised they are making such a big deal out of this one. I take a late lunch so maybe I'll experience some of it, but I don't have the glasses or anything so don't plan to look directly at it.

The media will hype a rain storm, so it doesn't surprise me at all

An event that happens every 7 years kind of *is* a big deal.
The 2024 eclipse is even closer to LI than today's eclipse, so that should be even cooler!
Also, before this eclipse, the last time there was a total solar eclipse visible in the US was in the 1970s. And even those eclipses were on the fringes of the US. All of the other total solar eclipses were visible in other countries/continents, so most people in the US haven't been able to see a total solar eclipse unless they traveled to another country.
Here's a cool site where you can look up solar and lunar eclipses. https://www.timeanddate.com/eclipse/north-america.html?starty=2010&type=total-solar

Re: Where will you be doing solar eclipse?
I'm going to try to adjust my break so I can be outside during it, but I'm not looking up - I don't have the glasses and quite frankly, I don't trust most of them.
I did buy a bunch of themed snacks for work, and I'm sort of the designated party planner for office shit. Moon Pies, Sun Chips, Sunkist soda, Milky Ways, Starburst, Pop Rocks.
As with most events in life, I'm excited for the snacks.

Yeah I guess. I kept hearing "once in a lifetime" so I figured every 60 years or something - then I googled and saw that there's another, even better one for us in seven years!

I will try to take my dd outside during it. We have a pair of the viewing glasses, and also made a viewing box. She's kind of excited about it. And I'm interested to see it since I don't remember seeing one before.
