This is so silly...we took selfies, pictures with camera and phone, and we lived to tell, and so did our phones and cameras Mass hysteria over this thing...cracks me up!! I know people that wouldn't even let their kids outdoors!! We were at Sailor's Haven, and honestly most of the kids weren't even interested beyond looking through their glasses every 15 minutes or so.
I have no idea of the validity of it, I just didn't think any of it was worth the risk to be honest. I didn't think it was anything spectacular anyway.

All the media and hype leading up to it had me a little nervous to let my 4yo outside during it. I had thought she'd keep looking up and I'd have to drag her inside with my hand over her eyes and I planned to keep my 1 yo inside the whole time. But it ended up being different than I expected, since it didn't actually get dark and was just like a regular day. So I had both kids playing outside and the baby didn't look up at all since he had no reason to, and the my 4yo was great about only looking thru the glasses. I'm so glad I got to experience it with her and teach her a little about the solar system.

Where will you be doing solar eclipse?
My three kids were so excited, we made a day out of it and hit Jones Beach. I made masks with their solar glasses and they kept watch at various intervals. Honestly, it was amazing. Glad I got to see it and my kids will always remember this day. We all had our own glasses and let people at the beach borrow so they could see too. My hubby at work in midtown had his glasses watching when he went out for lunch and had a line of people taking turns borrowing his glasses to see through them. Can't wait for 2024 when it'll be even closer.

Re: Where will you be doing solar eclipse?
We stayed in. My kids were napping (I wouldn't have brought them outside anyway because I don't trust that they wouldn't look up). I looked outside through the window during the eclipse (I thought it was pretty cool to see how the light changed) but didn't look up at the sun or the sky. I don't have the special glasses but there's no way I'd use them even if I did (I'm actually surprised that people trust the glasses... I'd be way too nervous about my eyesight to use them or let my kids use them-- totally not worth it to me). At the park near my house there were tons of people camped out to watch the eclipse which I found surprising! We did watch coverage on TV from the locations where it was a total eclipse & we thought that was very interesting, to see how it became like nighttime during the day! Next solar eclipse in 2024 should be a little more dramatic in NY!

Someone at work had a pair of glasses so we all went outside. It was pretty cool to see. My sil was in Tennessee and saw the totality. Her pics are amazing

Did you look through a pair of glasses at all ever to see what it looks like? Complete darkness other than a blip of light (the sun). I'm sure they are totally safe and the same type the employees at NASA wear! and we survived with our eyesight in tact!

Re: Where will you be doing solar eclipse?
We all watched from our front porch with welding helmets. I knew that by not being in the path of totality, the spectacle wouldn't be anywhere near as impressive, but it was still neat seeing the sun partially blocked, and the sky get darker and the winds pick up.
Being outside of the path of totality is like the difference between seeing fireworks in NYC on July 4th vs seeing a box of unlit firecrackers in a store....
I can see how ancient humans would be scared by something like this happening.

His eye is still behind the lens though, so I'm sure he came out unscathed! I did see many people make some sort of cereal box thing to put their glasses in so they cover their kids entire face.
In the 80's at school we all watched an eclipse outside with glasses, and we all lived to tell. The panic and hysteria is a newfound thing since FB was invented I think

Where will you be doing solar eclipse?
I picked my kids up from camp early because they had dentist appointments so they were able to see a little. they looked a few times (at camp, at the dentist and at home). We shared our glasses with the folks at the dentists office.
I was worried because of all of the hype but, I just told them to hold their glasses and to look down before taking them off.
Camp kept the kids inside since everyone was worried (so I'm glad I picked them up early that day since it was chaotic).

I get it, but just like lasik surgery to correct my horrible vision, for ME it's not worth any risk at all. I know that having lasik carries a very very very tiny risk of vision damage but when it comes to my eyes no risk is acceptable. So I continue to wear contacts and just deal with it.
For me, seeing a eclipse is absolutely not worth any risk at all, because for ME, I couldn't care less about the sun being partially blocked for a few minutes. So that's where my reasoning comes from. Not to mention, I had to work yesterday as it was just another Monday at the office, and had back to back conference calls all afternoon, so it was a non issue anyway.

You do realize that eye damage and blindness are a real thing from looking at an eclipse without protection, right? It's not a FB thing...it's science. I would thing, on THIS site especially knowing the demographics and ideology of most posters, you all should believe in science? I for one, will never take the chance, it is not worth it to me at all. I also have no interest, I know shocking! It gets dark everyday, I can go out at night and see darkness. Also, it can take days for damage to appear. Everybody is free to do what they want, but stop talking down to people who don't feel like playing with their vision or their children's.

It's all about acceptable risks. For me, I would never wear contacts (for several reasons) because of the small risk of damage to my eyes. To me, it's not worth that risk. I wear glasses instead.
There's also always a risk of sun damage any time you're outside. Sun glaring off of water, snow, mirrors, glass, etc, is also very damaging. "Snow blindness" is a real thing, and in rare cases of extended exposure, can lead to permanent blindness.
However, we can't hide from every possible danger that may happen. Everything we do has a risk, and we each have to evaluate how much risk we're willing to take for each activity.
The professional (and skilled amateur) photos and videos, especially of the total eclipse definitely beat out the in-person partial eclipse, but I still wanted to see as much of the eclipse as I could in person, since it is such a rare event.
I would never force someone to "have to" watch the eclipse, or scold them for not watching it. A partial eclipse, even for someone who enjoys astronomy, isn't overly exciting.

Exactly! That was my point. Everyone takes risks according to what they are comfortable with and what they value.
I wear contacts because I hate glasses, and accept that risk. But I won't accept the risk of laser surgery on my eye.
I would love to get a boob job, , but the risk of an elective surgery is too much for ME. For others, it's worth the risk to feel better about themselves and have plastic surgery.
For ME, viewing an eclipse was not worth any risk because I really didn't care about it one way or the other. To others, it's worth the risk because they were really into it.

Have you seen any pics of the total eclipse? Some of those pics, especially the NASA ones, are pretty neat. Maybe not exciting or mind-blowing, but pretty cool to see.

I stayed in. Too paranoid to be bothered with something I don't care about anyway. Things like that mean nothing to me to be honest. It does not interest me, nor does the worry about going blind.

Oh stop...the hysteria is out of control. It's a real thing if you are STARING at the sun without protection, just like on any other normal day of the year. To not even let your kids go outside is hysteria, and all of that IS hyped up from the internet We will have to agree to disagree

That's good for you... to each her own. I'm not convinced it is 100% safe to stare at the sun regardless... even with magical glasses on... and I didn't care enough about seeing the eclipse to try it anyway.
