Wherever my children settle. If I didn’t have kids, I think I would look at retiring to the Berkshires. I really hate the heat.

Wherever my kids settle. I refuse to be the grandma that sends a card and a check for birthdays. I will definitely be pushing them to leave New York.

My daughter settled in Alaska. I hate that her and the grandkids are there. But there is no way I could move there. The winters are brutal. Can get to 50 below. The days are short and dark.

It sucks for sure!

My cousin moved up there and it breaks my aunt and uncle's heart every day but there is no way they would relocate to be near her and the grandkids either. The winters are way too long, cold and dark. And it is just so damn far!

For what it's worth, I think this makes you an amazing mother and grandmother... It sounds like you let your daughter live the life she chooses without making her or your grandchildren feel awful about it (even though I'm sure it tears you apart inside). Chat Icon

And dang, there is no way I could live there either. 50 **below**??? Fluck that!!!! I can't even tolerate 50 above without whining that it's cold! Chat Icon Does she enjoy it there?

Aww thank you for that.

That's actually what I tell people when they ask me how I do it.
I always say. You want your kids to be happy. You raise them to live THEIR life. And if that's where her happiness is than I have to support that. And she is very happy there. I get out there at least once a year. Sometimes twice.

And they are coming here in Aug for 11 days! Chat Icon Needless to say I am over the moon. I love having the kids here.

Facetime also helps. I refuse to let the kids forget my face Chat Icon

Again, thank you for words. That meant a lot.Chat Icon

There is actually a town in Alaska on the coast (southern end I believe) that is warmer in winter than on LI. Looks beautiful too! Can't remember the name of it but I'm sure I could find it if you're interested.

Why does it not shock me that there is a place in Alaska that is warmer than LI?
I'm sure there is a place at the North Pole tha that has shorter winters than LI too?

Maryland or Virginia ...away from DC ...too expensive. We want to stay on east cost but not go too south. We just want to go where taxes are less.

Florida.
As far south in the state as possible. Most likely on the gulf coast.
Almost everyone we met on a recent trip down there had relocated there from NY or NJ and every single one said they would NEVER go back . They all loved it.

I’ve been to Santa’s village in Finland in the middle of the summer. The sun never went down. You just watched the sun just circle around. Having light 24 hours a day sounds brutal to me.

I already deal with something like that here. The sun is up in summer for 18 hours. It’s “dark” for 6 hours. It totally sucks. It can get really, really hot here and there is no A/C. However, the heat doesn’t last as long as it does on LI. I’m going to go into this summer phase here and I’m not looking forward to it. The winter here was snow every day for 5 months (I’m at the base of the mountains). I’m pretty sure it’s going to be a hot summer here with lots of hail storms. We already had a bad wind storm this week.

But I can’t change the weather and I just shrug. What else can I do? My cats love the sun, though.

Whenever and wherever I retire I just want somewhere where the weather is mild.

My dream? Costa Rica.

Where I'll actually be? Probably NY, unless my kids move somewhere else
