Which is more energy efficient?
We *might* need a new washing machine - which is more energy efficient - a front-loader or a top-loader?

Re: Which is more energy efficient?
I think front loaders use less water, therefore don't make the dryers work as hard, too.

I just saw something about this on tv the other day. Front load uses much much less water. Overall it is more efficient than the top load.

Re: Which is more energy efficient?
we have the whirlpool cabrio- our washer is top loading, and the dryer is front load... the washer does come in front load, but i just prefer the top load becasue thats what i've always had. our top load washer is still HE, and still needs the HE detergent and everything... not sure if/how it compares to the front load with energy efficiency, but i'm guessing it has to be pretty good if its got the HE designation.... we LOVE them so far!! you can fit sooo much in there, because it doesn't have the center agitator. so nice!

Re: Which is more energy efficient?
We also just bought the Whirlpool Cabrio washer and dryer. The washer is certified Energy Star and is supposed to use only $35/year according to the tag I have. The top loaders are just as efficient as the front loaders now assuming you opt for the HE machines.
Not only that, but PC Richard is giving 10% off if you buy the pair, plus Whirlpool has $100 rebate (or more if you buy more than the two appliances) and I believe we get a rebate from LIPA because it's an Energy Star product - but I have to look into that.

Re: Which is more energy efficient?
Front loaders use way less water. At first I actually thought there was something wrong with the unit since I saw no water going in there.

Re: Which is more energy efficient?
We just bought the top loader Whirlpool Cabrio and it's an energy star appliance. We get a discount with LIPA once we submit the paperwork.
We got our first electric bill since we had the washer and it went down dramtically! The water bill is quarterly, so we have no basis to compare.
My issue with the front loaders, is that you have to purchase the stands to place the washer/dryer on, so you don't have to bend over so much. Those stands are nearly $200/piece. Plus, I read some reviews of the doors staying wet and thus getting a moldy smell. I reviewed consumer's report for all reviews and we went by that when we were looking.

You don't have to buy the $200 stands. We have ours on concrete blocks and wood, works just fine.
For the most part front loaders are more efficient. There are some top loaders that are as well.
