Re: While you are at work is your dog...
Marley is only 2 mos old, so she is confined to an area in the living room. We have a walker than comes to play with her mid-day. Once she is potty trained, we will let her have the run of the house.

Re: While you are at work is your dog...
My toy poodle is confined to the kitchen. I pt his toys and his pillow in there with him. We let him roam the house only hen we are going to be out for like an hour.
My pit mix is crated. He LOVES his crate. Right before i am ready to go to work in the morning he goes in his crate and just sits there waiting for me to close the door. I put a blanket int here for him and some toys that he can't choke on. And his crate is more like a co-op...lol....When he was finished with his potty training, he would stand in front of his crate door until we opened it at bedtime. so we bought him a much bigger one and he loves it.
If you have a puppy then i would definately keep him confined in 1 area or in a crate. If you have an older dog that you 100% know you don't have to worry about going to the bathroom all over or chewing thins up then it is fine to let them roam.

He has the run of the house. Hes a little over a year though. He just likes to cuddle on my dads recliner and sleep, waiting for someone to come home.

Re: While you are at work is your dog...
free to roam. We did keep her confined to the kitchen for about a year since she was very destructive. But as she got older she got better. Still does things every once in awhile, but for the most part she's good.

Re: While you are at work is your dog...
Crated until about 6 months. Now at almost 2 she is gated off in the kitchen.
ETA: I've been considering letting her have free roam. Last time we tried she ate some molding.

My Lhasa is free to roam
My labradoodle suffers separation anxiety so she was until she ate my couch, now she is crated.
The new one is crated, we have only had her for a couple of months.

Re: While you are at work is your dog...
Free to roam the living room, dining room, kitchen and den since about a year ago (she is 2 1/2). Before that we had a puppy playpen that she'd stay in all day. She still stays in that on the days the cleaning lady comes.

Re: While you are at work is your dog...
Limited to two large rooms (ktichen and dining room). They have water (no food, I worry they will choke), safe toys, beds, a rug to lay on etc.
Basically it is half of my downsatairs living area. It works out great.
I really could let them run throughout the house but I worry that someone will come to the door and my dogs will stand there and bark all day and I hate for them to get upset like that.

Re: While you are at work is your dog...
Crated and always will be. We've left her alone in the house for just a few minutes to find things chewed up, all day like that and the place will look like it was robbed!!
She's only about 9 months tho, but even as an adult we just wouldn't trust a dog to roam free.

Re: While you are at work is your dog...
ours is only 4 months old, so he's kept in a large x-pen that has plenty of room for him to run around and play in.

You don't think she will calm down as an adult? What about confining to a room or two?
My dog is now 2.5 and he is still VERY energetic, but we learned what he is good with and what he is not (he loves to rip thick carpets, not thin ones). So we just remove any items he might destory out of boredom and we try to exercise him a lot. It has worked for us, this way he is not confined and he can stretch and play and roam in two rooms.
Your dog really will calm down in time, he is young yet.

Re: While you are at work is your dog...
free to roam the house. we used to keep him confined to the kitchen (kept a baby gate up) in case of an accident... when he learned to control his bladder, he was allowed the whole house, we just kept the doors to the bathrooms shut because he liked to pull all the TP off the roll and shred it. now he is entirely trustworthy

Re: While you are at work is your dog...
I crated her for the eight months, then she was gated in the kitchen-and now she is out in the house-but all bedroom doors and bathroom doors are closed :)
