Re: While you are at work is your dog...
Jasmine is only 4 mo old so she is usually crated, DH works nights and is home days or she is in the kitchen gated. She is allowed to roam free after peep N poop but she is always closely monitored for now, she is getting more freedom and doing well but if anything she will be like this for at least another 3 months

Re: While you are at work is your dog...
Crated. But she LOVES her crate. I think it is b/c she knows we are coming home if she is in there and she is right by 3 huge windows so she can see the yard and the driveway.
She is the best dog. When she sees me put DS in his car seat she goes into her crate

Posted by imthecindyofcindyandkevin She's only about 9 months tho, but even as an adult we just wouldn't trust a dog to roam free.
You don't think she will calm down as an adult? What about confining to a room or two?
My dog is now 2.5 and he is still VERY energetic, but we learned what he is good with and what he is not (he loves to rip thick carpets, not thin ones). So we just remove any items he might destory out of boredom and we try to exercise him a lot. It has worked for us, this way he is not confined and he can stretch and play and roam in two rooms.
Your dog really will calm down in time, he is young yet.
No offense, but if the crate works for them, then it works for them. Every animal and family is different and different things work for them.
My dog happens to really love her crate. She is a nervous dog and if we left her out to roam she would get VERY nervous and upset. If she is in her crate, she knows we are coming home to her.
Not trying to start drama, just wanted to put my experience in

Thank you!!
Kasey also loves her crate, it's her "safe place". I think giving her too much room would lead her to become anxious when we're not home, but in her crate she feels more secure.

I don't mind and appreciate you posting your experience! However, I was referring to the post that said that they would never trust her even as an adult. It said nothing about the reasons to leaver the dog in the crate are due to her liking it and it being her safe place.
Now if she likes it and chooses to go in, that is very different than if she must go in (and doesn't like it) simply b/c she can't be trusted. My dog hated it and could not be trusted at that age and it was needed then, but it is not needed now. So I was sharing my experience showing that even naughty dogs can be trusted as they age or if you just remove a few items that the dog could destroy. Not meaning anything bad at all!
But yes, if the dog likes it, that is a whole differnet ballgame but in general, dogs do need to have a certain amount of freedom and movement during the day, in order to develop proper hind leg function. According to the vet, crating is still not recommended for more than a certain amt of hours a day. Or ideally, leaving the crate open so they can go in their safe place, while still having the option to exit, to play, to move around, during adulthood.
Puppies can be naughty and need to be taught, that is generally why we crate "train". But adult dogs should generally are able to be trusted and speaking from experience, I can vouch for the fact that after they go through their teething and teenage years, adult dogs no longer NEED crate "training" (but yes, may love their crate by then, or may still hate it but should still have the option to exit the crate if they are going to be left for more than a few hours!) and that was all I was referring to. No offense meant!

Wow, I am amazed that dogs can love their crates so much. My dog was miserable in the crate and would run out so Pizzed off and pent up, it was terrible. He would have surely gone insane if he had to use a crate for his entire lifetime. I was so glad he calmed down enough to be trusted and not be confined to a crate. I used to feel so bad leaving him home in the crate even for a few hours. Now I don't ever have to feel bad b/c he is free to do the same things when we are out or we are home and that takes a load off my mind!

Re: While you are at work is your dog...
I guess every dog is different. Charlie hated his crate, but I think it's because he sensed that we didn't like it either.
During the day he is with us at work, but when we are out and have to leave him at home he roams the house.

We never planned on using the crate forever, but she really does like it. But we've never used our crate as punishment. She has one of DH's old sweatshirts in there and she cuddles up with it.
Don't get me wrong, she is excited to get out, but she goes in there willingly and even can nudge the door open herself.

Re: While you are at work is your dog...
Coop is gated in the hallway with his crate and his bed inside the crate and a few toys. We used to crate him exclusively, but this works out so much better for him.

Re: While you are at work is your dog...
We used to have her crated until she was about 10 months old...then we confined her to the bedroom for a few months...one night we got home and she was trying to tunnel her way under the door to freedom (clawed through the new carpet and padding to the wood floor) so we decided to give her a little more room in the house.
Now she is in the lower level of our house and is not able to go into the basement or up the stairs....we often find her tap dancing on the dining room table...but she is a lot happier now than she was in the crate.

Free to roam the house...he never adjusted to crate training, so at first, we confined him to an area of the house, and now he is free to roam (he is almost two).

Re: While you are at work is your dog...
Free to roam - he is a good dog.
I wouldn't recommend leaving him outside. Our vet told us a friend of hers came home and found that her dog had hung himself apprantly trying to jum the fence and got his collar stuck So ever since I won't leave Murray out.

Re: While you are at work is your dog...
I work from home so he is free to roam downstairs.
When we go out, the living room and upstairs are blocked off. He has access to the den and kitchen. He's not a year yet, still a puppy, and still chewing things up.

He roams the house. We had him gated in the kitchen for a year while we went out, but now he is fine. He usually goes and lays down in his bed when we leave and is in the same spot when we come home.

Yogi is only 10 months and we are just now trying to ween him off of the crate. We leave him in a bedroom with the door closed. He has done really well so far. We have also left him alone for an hour or two to roam the house and he hasn't destroyed anything yet.
