I had a military pen pal in 1990 (desert storm), only exchanged a few letters, I was 10 years old

I did years ago... a girl my own age in Japan. We wrote for about two years and then just stopped.

I remember she had the neatest handwriting I've ever seen!!

e-mail sort of 86'd a lot of the whole 'pen pal' thing.

i have a lot of friends in the UK that i keep in touch with but... over email and facebook not handwritten stuff.

When I was 10 I got a pen pal from a small town in Germany. I am now 34 and we STILL keep in touch!!! She has visited me in NY twice & even came to my wedding. Think it's so great to still "write" to someone & can't wait for my daughters to get pen pals too, hope they get someone as special as I did!

I did as a kid...she lived in Oklahoma. I think I wrote to the post office and they sent me a card with her name and address on it.

We lost touch around college but recently I found her on facebook!

Oh memories.
The days before email- it was actually kind of nice to write on cute stationary with a pen and put a stamp on and mail the letter!
I remember when I was a kid in the 80s stationary stores were big. You'd get pretty paper, matching envelopes. You could buy them by the piece.

I had a few.

In school they matched us up with a school in Chinatown and we wrote to those students. We even took a field trip into Chinatown to their school to meet them.

I think I had one in Oklahoma too in another grade

I also had one that I got from my Teen Beat magazine or something.
Forgot where she was from!

I had one in Malaysia (???) when I was younger but it would take 10 months to get letters, so I think we only exchanged like 3 times!

When I was in elementary school I put a letter in an empty soda bottle and threw it into the ocean (in Staten Island). A few years later, after I had already graduated, my school sent me a letter from a little boy in Florida who found my bottle at beach near him! I had forgotten all about it, but apparently I left my school's address instead of my own in case someone crazy found it Anway, we wrote for a while and we actually met up once when I was visiting my grandmother who lived an hour or so away from him. We don't keep in touch anymore, but we were pen pals for a few years

Not since 8th grade French

My cousin and I used to write back and forth around that time as well, but then we lost touch until Facebook

I always had penpals growing up, some in England and France and when I was older, I wrote to someone in Japan for a few weeks.

I used to write lots and lots of letters...I was a huge letter writer (mostly during class) My husband has tons of letters that I wrote him in the two and a half years we had our long distance relationship. They are all rubbish though.
