Who will be a SAHM?...

just curious..seems there are alot more of us out there.....i am on bedrest now and we decided that after the twins were born i wouldn't go back to work and I would become a SAHM( i am so excited to be able to!!) the cost of daycare and travel time for bringing 2 kids to daycare all day would eat a huge chunk of my paycheks.....anyone else staying home after baby?

also..we will most likely end up moving to florida within a few months of their birth to be closer to my family ....my parents will be such a help for me andi want the boys to grow up around family......anyway if we did move to florida i may get a pt job eventually and have my parents watch them ( they would love it)Chat Icon i guess all in all i am a very lucky girl!

This is still something that DH and I need to discuss in depth and figure out if it's feasible. I make a good amount more than DH and I just don't know if it would be a smart decision. I am thinking I may cut down my hours a little bit but I doubt I'll leave my job.

Re: Who will be a SAHM?...kinnda ventiing also lol

Originally I was going to work from home for 6 mos, only going into the office once a week for meetings and status updates. Now with the state of the economy, it looks like the company does not want to pay to set me up in a home office. I am still trying to work out the details, but I am afraid in this economy, with DH company already laying off 5% of their staff, to willingly leave my job.

If we were to leave NY though I would be a SAHM. It is solely b/c of the COL in NY that I need to work. Also, I would send DS to school at this point whether I was working or not, so that additional $1K a month is my expense as well from my salary.

I think its a really personal decision...but I will say to anyone on the fence about being a SAHM, definitely try it out! I loved being a SAHM so much and I'm not going to lie...financially it has been hard for us...DH does not make a good amount of $$ right now (works for DC government) BUT I wouldn't have traded it for the world. Best thing I've ever done!

I hope to go down to 3 days a week. I really want to maintain my own retirement plan, aside from the money that I bring in.

Well, I guess I will be both. Im not working now. I will go back to work at about 3months after he is born. BUT it will be at night, DH works from home and will be here when I leave. We are also moving back to NY over the summer to be closer to family who can help watch him, so I can work more. I could actually be a SAHM, but for my own sanity I want to go back to work. Im going crazy now. I can only imagine if I had NO outlet what so ever. But thats just me.

Kind of I guess. I work from home. I am in sales. My boss is in Ohio. I do some mostly local travel and maybe 2 trade shows a year. Luckily my DH works from home too. Our plan is to get a "Mothers Helper" type person to help us out a few days a week. My day is really flexible and a lot of my stuff can be done at night(e-mailing leads-etc.) so I am hoping it works out well. We will see. I will probably be off for 8 weeks on STD. I can take 2 more weeks vacation if I want to.

I just wanted to weigh in...I went back to work after 3 months because I loved my job. But after 3 months back to work decided to go PT. I switched jobs to do so but I love it. I love getitng out of hte house and having time to myself as well as a sense of achievement that is all mine, I am not DS's mom or DHs wife.
Also my ILs watch him while I work which is amazing. The bond that my DS has with them it priceless.

I will go back after 6 months -
I 'could' stay home, but we agreed it was best for our family for me to work -
I honestly don't think I would be a very good mother if I was a SAHM

Re: Who will be a SAHM?...kinnda ventiing also lol

i was a SAHWife before i was a SAHM.

my 1st was born in Aug 2007 and my 2nd one is due in July 2009.

i LOVE being a SAHM and i am fortunate to be able to do it.

if i do work (sporadic through out the year) i work in daycare where i bring my son. or i will watch my friends kids where i can have my son with me.

once the next one comes... i dont know if i want to go back to watching kids... i will have two of my own...

but once they are both in school its back to work for me,.

Re: Who will be a SAHM?...kinnda ventiing also lol

I plan on working part time after 5-6 months. Definitely giving up my NYC job. Don't think I could commute in, work all day, commute back, get home at 7pm ..when would I see my baby?

I tossed around the idea of being a SAHM, but would rather not give up the lifestyle DH and I have worked so hard to maintain.

It's also nice to feel as if my contribution gives our family the extras we would like to be able to do.

I'll only be working 3 half days a week, just to get out, and for some extra $$. We are living in a low cost of living area(not that anywhere on LI really is) in order otherwise I would be working full time too!

Re: Who will be a SAHM?...kinnda ventiing also lol

I will be a SAHM....... put I am gonna be gone for part of the day to go to school....

I worked in finance and I find that I dont want to find another finance job...

I want to go into teaching....

If I go back to work it will be for 1/2 of what I was making...

I will need daycare... Which is so expensive....

So my husband wants me to stay home go to school or work part time is ok but no more 7:30 - 7:30 job....

Me too. I've already thrown this idea out to my bosses and they seem willing to discuss when my due date gets closer. I think with how the economy is going they wouldn't mind paying me only 3/5 of my salary.

I will not right now medical Insurance is under my company. Until Dh lands a perm teaching job then it will be another story. But I am taking at least 12 weeks off and then maybe work 4 days a week if work will let me. My parents will be watching the child for us which helps out big time!!

I am a SAHM, but was also a WAHM ( I own a NYS Family Day Care, that is run from my home ) ....Fortunately we are getting by on DH's salary, but should our situation change, I have the ability to open back up again and the flexibility to stay home with my DC's Chat Icon

Re: Who will be a SAHM?...

I am one now so I will be for DC#2 as well- I had originally planned to go back to work but when we factored in daycare, commuting to NYC, insurance (b.c DH's firm wouldn't cover me or DD if I was working) other expenses I wouldn't be bringing home enough to really make any difference. So DH insisted (and I wanted to) that I stay home with DD and I can always go back when the kids are in school.

Re: Who will be a SAHM?...

I make a good amout more than DH, so this really is not an option for us. I will be making even more after I finish my MBA next year. I also carry the insurance for us.

If one of us had to stay home it would be DH.

This is the way I'm feeling....I think I'm going to start looking again after 6 mos...I am the type of person that needs to bring home a paycheck, and I've really built up my career and don't know if I want to lose that, on the other hand, I have never been a mom, My thoughts could change completely once DD is here..so who knows...
