I can't wait for this to be over....DH has been super excited for this for months and tells me almost every day about how it's almost here.
at least if the conspiracy people are right - it will be a very quick death and we won't know any bit of it!

Oh wow. I'm in the middle of reading "Angels and Demons" by Dan Brown (his first book, before "The Da Vinci Code") and it's all about CERN and supercolliders creating anitmatter and stuff.
I had no idea that this was a real place doing those kinds of experiments! 
(btw, in the book, terrorists stole the technology and used it to create a bomb to destroy the Vatican. I assume they fail. i'll find out in about 100 pages!)

This is how BILLIONS of dollars are being spent?!
And what happens when they discover NOTHING from this?
Or better yet, what happens when they discover that the big bang theory did happen......?
Does it actually really change anything!? It happened already!!!!!!!
Sorry - I just can't fathom spending $10 BILLION on this type of experiment when people everywhere around the world are going hungry.
ETA: I understand the nuclear component to it all - and trying to understand how it works...but I'm still BAFFLED by this.
ETAA: I recognize I sound super ignorant right now. But I just can't get over 10 BILLION dollars. Wow!

I actually think it's pretty cool. Really interesting to see what science can do.
About the 5 years thing... the article said it would take several years to amp it to full power... Maybe that's what you heard on Today?

Dont worry we will all be here tomorrow night posting on Lif! I think they over exaggerate things. But like others posters said it would be intertesting to see what science can do.
ETA: If the world is going to end tomorrow than I want to apologize to everyone on here, If i ever did anything wrong to anyone i want to apologize, I want to have a clean slate if thats the
case....Believe me i know it'a not going to 'BUT' Just incase i wanted to get this off my chest.  Thank you

The scientific community is in agreement that this poses no risk of blowing up earth. I think a lot of people who weren't well informed and the media ran away with this story.
There's no need to panic. The world isn't ending tomorrow -- at least not because of this particle accelerator.
