Sorry - I just can't fathom spending $10 BILLION on this type of experiment when people everywhere around the world are going hungry.
ETA: I understand the nuclear component to it all - and trying to understand how it works...but I'm still BAFFLED by this.
ETAA: I recognize I sound super ignorant right now. But I just can't get over 10 BILLION dollars. Wow!

as long as someone lets me know when the end of the earth will be so i can run to coldstone and gorge myself on cake batter ice cream with cookie dough, brownie dough and marshmallows --- something i have been avoiding, for my figures sake, for months.
so, i mean, if i'm going to bite it in a great, big earth catastrophe i want to go out eating my cake batter ice cream -- in the "love it" size, please.

I absolutely agree.
Its not just about re-creating the big bang, its about understanding how the universe works - how atoms are put together. Physics explains EVERYTHING in the universe - and if we have a better understanding of what is going on in the universe, we can use this understanding to our benefit. For example, we have already figured out how to split an atom - this is the how nuclear power works. If scientists could figure out nuclear FUSION - bringing two atoms together, and how to harness the energy from that reaction, the energy issues we have today would be no more.

I don't mean to pick on you, but I have to say that I really don't like this logic in general. First of all, it's not one experiment. This will be the most advanced and useful particle accelerator on earth and will be useful for research for decades if not longer. The research they will be able to conduct could change the way we understand the world and in turn the way we run our world. It's not just fascinating, it will have practical applications as well.
Also, by this logic, then we just shouldn't spend money on anything until everyone is fed. Why should our government spend millions to build roads when we have homeless people? Why cure cancer when we can't cure AIDS? The fact is that there are many worthy causes deserving of funds and attention, including the arts and sciences.
As far as the finances go, this project was funded by about 2,000 separate sources over a period of decades.
Funding for the hungry?
$16,000,000 million was raised worldwide during World Hunger Relief Week for WFP and other hunger relief agencies around the globe.
$16 million in one week isn't too shabby and this is one of many global and local initiatives to feed the hungry. Is it ever enough? No, and it's a cause near and dear to my heart... but I don't begrudge science their advances because there are causes I deem 'worthier' for some reason.
There are good things being done for various causes by different people around the world for different reasons. I think it's important that not everyone have the same cause - because it allows other important causes to get attention. We can't focus on one thing at a time.
Again, I understand where you are coming from. This portion of your post just reminded me of a thought I had about this...

Oh, and SupaBonBon, I don't think you sounded ignorant in your post. This just isn't important to you. It is, however, important to many, many, many people -- and may be of practical importance for the entire world. To each his own, but I don't think 2,000 sources funding $10 billion over a period of decades for some of the most advanced particle physics research that will ever be done is outrageous. Again, many probably do - just my humble opinion.
