Why are some people like this? (negative towards career choice)

I really don't understand why certain people are still in my life.

I have decided (after a few years of thinking about it) to go back to school and become a nurse. It's all I think about doing. I love the medical field and I LOVE helping people and talking to people. I've been told several times that I'd make a great nurse and decided to go for it.

I told a friend and her answer was "Geez, you really want to do that?". She warned me that I'll basically never see my kids and the classes are insanely hard and that the medical field has no respect for nurses.

All of this within a 20 minute phone conversation. I know she is very unhappy with her career and they always struggle...but why bring me down? I have a long history wth this friend...she is a good person but for some reason has a way of being negative a LOT and I should have expected it.

It doesn't change how I feel about becoming a nurse. I just wonder why people have to be that way? I've never been like that. I'm happy for my friends when good things happen, and am there for them through the tough stuff.

i've been a SAHM for 6 years and just really want to do this for myself. We desperately need a second income as well and its time for me to do this. Sigh...

..ps-and its not completely true that I'll never see my kids. I'm going to night school. I'll be here during the day. I will miss things in their life here and there while I go to school but I'm OK with it. It's something that will benefit all of us...

Because some people like to dwell in their misery and find any change to be even worse than their current unhappiness. So they see others who try to change things up as confusing. Why not stay with the devil you know? type people.

Personally.. I love change. I say GO FOR IT! Then again I picked up and moved to NYC on a whim hahaha. I wish you best of luck with school and career.

You WILL see your kids, and you will be fine. I got through nursing school for my RN while working full time and having a child during that time. just got my license last week (woohoo). It all works out. Don't let negative nancy ruin your enthusiasm for your goal. If you have any questions, let me know and GOOD LUCK!!Chat Icon

Some people are haters plain and simple. For example, I could never be a nurse, but I would never discourage someone who wants to become one, I applaud them! Nursing is an incredibly admirable career and one that we NEED smart, dedicated people to WANT to become, good for you and GOOD LUCK Chat Icon

thank you!! I appreciate that! In the past 10 years i've quit my NYC job, moved to DC to be with DH (then my boyfriend), got married, had kids, became a SAHM, DH went to afghanistan, just recovered from an ectopic pregnancy and now this! LOL. I can handle change and adapt well...but I'll admit, I'm a bit scared. It's going to be hard and life WILL be upside down but i'm doing this for my family and for ME. I need this. I have been with my kids every day for 6 years and i've loved it, but i do need something else that inspires me.

I do love this friend. She is a good person. She is just negative. Does that make sense? Like when I talk to her sometimes i hang up feeling worse about myself, lol. I don't even think she means to do it. She just sees a lot of negatives and i think wants me to be aware of them...but I am excited so why rain on my parade you know? lol

Is she a nurse? Maybe its not right for her?

Gong back to school as an adult does involve some sacrifice, but it is only for the short term. My father was working full time & going to school when I was little, but I saw him & appreciated the time when he was around even more.

Many moms are nurses--it will be fine. My DH works in a hospital & they are always encouraging people to go to school for nursing.I think there is a lot of opportunity there, and there are many different types of nursing--so you will find the type that works for you.

I don't know if the medical community respects nurses, but patients do! If it is something you think you'd be good at go for it!

She isn't a nurse, she works an admin job for a large company. She thought about nursing 2 years ago and when she researched the program she realized it wasn't for her. She is smart and desperately needs a career change herself..but she isn't the most people friendly person. She said she would hate dealing with nasty patients, lol. It's true..you have to WANT to be a nurse to do it and i definitely do!

thanks everyone!

Re: Why are some people like this? (negative towards career choice)

I could see people being negative about it if they can't find a job, or, are miserable in their job. (As a nurse btw).

I see it a lot, because I work with many nurses in the health care field.

I think they are more annoyed with the bureacracy and the unrealistic demands that are being thrown onto them though, and not the actual job and patients themselves.

I've also seen people talk negatively about a field if they are regretful they didn't pursue it themselves.

My cousin (also a SAHM) just did it. I think she's an RN now. My neighbor also did it when she was a SAHM. It's totally possible, and they both see their kids all the time. I actually have a lot of friends who are nurses, but you get the point. All of them LOVE it. Yes, it's difficult. The classes are hard. Some of them had trouble taking the tests, etc.. But they all did it, finished it, and love it. All of them found jobs, and they're all doing well.

I don't know what your friend's deal is, maybe she's just looking out for you, but don't take it to heart. Go for it!

Yes, if you can go thru all that you have the will and determination to get through this. Truly that is a LOT and you should remember all of it and be proud of the fact you are still standing tall and moving forward.

Its always scary but every step you take makes you braver and braver. Not to say its going to be easy but I think you can pull thru when you compare what you've done to all you've already been through already.

I have those kind of friends. I truly do love them and actually feel bad for them in a way. I want them to stop seeing the black in their life and see the joy and goodness, the sucesses and the dreams still unfullfilled. So its nearly a mission of mine to make them happy around me as much as I can.

But telling them my fears invites the negative back into me. I try not to but sometimes I just need to HEAR my own fears from someone else to realize "hey that's not cool" and snap back into perspective. Does that make sense? In a way they are good for that (sounds terrible) but they make me see what the world sees of me. crazy woman, how COULD she? and when I get through it I look back and think "I did it because I could and I was right"

Again,.. I wish you best of luck in both school and career.

When people are miserable in their own lives they're never going to be happy or supportive of others.

Of course it's going to take SOME time away from your kids but in the end it will be more than worth it. Think of how much more you'll be able to give them and do for them with a second income. Your friend is being bitter, ignore her.

Sometimes you have to just delete people from your life. I recently did and it really feels good to say goodbye to the negativity. My theory is that if someone isn't bringing something positive to my life and/or if I don't care to work towards doing the same for them- we don't need to be friends.

Best of luck for you and congratulations on taking the first step towards your new career! It is challenging to be a working mom but people do it every day.

If you really want this, don't let anyone discourage you, and people who aren't nurses or haven't been through nursing school just won't get it.

First things first, those 7 prereqs can take 2-3 years part time to finish, going full time will be faster. Many of these classes are part 1 and 2 so some only have fall start or you need to finish one before you take another ( like having bio 1+2 before microbio). Don't underestimate how difficult these classes are, especially chemistry and anatomy. They require hours of study time outside of class and all of your sciences you need A's in to be highly competitive. There are few spots for night school and I know the waiting list is years long even for people with a 4.0. Nursing school itself does require a lot of studying, every day you will have to, but if you are organized and can set aside a few hours of designated uninterrupted study time daily then that will be ok.

The clinical rotations have a strict attendance policy and there are no absences allowed unless you are hospitalized or the death of an immediate family member (which will then give you prob one day). The state requires a certain # of clinical hours to become licensed and there isnt much if any chance to make up hours so that's why attendance is crucial. That is the part that gets a lot of parents, they will not be excused because thier child was off from school and had no sitter or anything like that. I believe more than one absence and you fail the course. That is going to be the hardest part for a parent, so plan ahead and make sure that you have plan B, C and D during clinic rotations because childcare issues are not excused and I think 2 lateness counts as an absence.

What I would do if I were you is find a way to attend classes during the day and your school options will be so much better. Look into to Adelphi, molloy, and any of the bachelors programs around here. If you already have a degree in something else then some of your prereqs will be waived (gen Ed wise).

Take your time with the prereqs so that you do very well in them, and then attend a bachelors program. Believe me, there is no advantage to graduating in 1-2 years since the job market is horrible, nobody is hiring new grads and without a bachelors degree forget it. I am optimistic that by the time you finish in 3-4 years the job market will have turned around and you will have your first choice as to where you want to work instead of scrambling for a job like many are now.

Best of luck to you. I know it seems like a long road ahead but you will get through it and once you start nursing school that will fly by so fast. Keep us updated!

Thanks for all of this!!

I am actually in Maryland..I'll be attending the local community college...I was told by a lot of my friends who are nurses that its a great program and they place their grads quickly in RN positions...I don't know...I have to see...but as far as I know, the associates at this school is great to have. I am going to try to take as many pre reqs as i can and study my butt off. I'll do whatever it takes!!

If she is unhappy, it may be impacting how she sees things. Dont let that thwardt you.

I am in the medical field and I can tell you that I cherish our nursing staff. Its a very rewarding (and demanding) field. Is it hard? Yes. Is it time consuming? Yes. If that is what you want to do, should you do it? YES!

When you are a happy person, you tend to view the world more optimisticly than if you are unhappy. That being said, I would discuss your career goals with a career counselor. There are a lot of changes to healthcare right now. See how career growth is in the setting you want to be in. Would you consider being a school nurse vs being in a hospital?

Ignore people and their negativity. If this is something that you want to do go for it! Nurses, especially good nurses are highly respected by doctors. Going back to school is hard regardless of the field.

thank you! I have an appointment on thurs to meet with a nursing advisor. I'll ask about career counseling. I am 99% sure I want to work in a hospital setting as an RN. My MIL is a school nurse actually...she doesn't have the necessary amount of help she needs to do it though..she spends her life doing paperwork and its overwhelming her greatly (she is an AZ). It kind of turned me off to it although it theory it seems like a great job...

Re: Why are some people like this? (negative towards career choice)

Thanks everyone for the info. I appreciate all the positive words!!! I am definitely going for this...lets hope I can do everything I need to. It won't be easy. I know that, but I'm no stranger to things being a bit difficult, lol. My life as a mom started off having a child with special needs and a bunch of other "tough stuff" was thrown at us. We've always manged to get through it.

I am a very very positive person towards life. I have my moments, I'm only human...but I've always looked at obstacles thrown my way as opportunities to learn something and better myself and always have. My child is thriving (he's doing so damn well!!!) and I thank god every single day for that. I take nothing for granted...so with a lot of time, patience and studying i can do it...I hope!!

Yes, i went to night school through a community college. It was the only all nighttime program that I could find, and I needed that because of my regular day job.

Do you have a BA already? you could go for an accelerated program if you are not working..but it is killer.

I agree with one of the other posters, that if you can get into a BA program, that IS better, as I now have to do that. But taking a little break from school to have my twins in Feb.

However, i have a license and can now work if I wanted too (not looking until after my maternity leave though)

From what I understand the job market is much better for gran RN's in MD than in NY, so I think you will be ok. But you will def. want your BSN at some point.

One step at a time, one foot in front of the other, one exam at a time. nail those pre req classes, and you should be good to go.

No, it is not easy, it is stressful, but I graduated with very good grades only studying after my kiddo was off to bed at night. everyone has to find their strategy, and it morphs as you go,

What matters is it is 100% doable.

I would say the most important thing is to have support to help watch kiddos esp. when you have big exams to study for. My DH worked all the time, so it was hard keeping DS happy and getting the work done that I needed. but it happened, and can be done.Chat Icon

This was SO incredibly helpful ..thank you!! I definitely will try to go for the BS at some point, but this is a starting point for me to get to where I need to be...DH works till 4pm everyday so I'm lucky in that aspect. He is SO supportive of this...he said he'll do what it takes for me to get there. I supported his ass while he went overseas for half a year, so he has no choice! Chat Icon

Thanks again, I will prob have more questions along the way!!

I think nursing is an excellent career, with lots of demand. Also hours you can work around your kids' schedules. Don't let naysayers get you down, go for it!

Re: Why are some people like this? (negative towards career choice)

I just graduated nursing school in May and I am confident you will be able to do it. I went to school with multiple people who had children and they were able to finish. Some days you might be tired and feel like you will never cross the finish line but just keep reminding yourself everyone feels like that at some point.

People are negative I think sometimes because they are not happy with themselves or their own lives and she is probably a littke envious that you are doing something to change yours.
