Why do people like 50 shades of grey so much
I am almost done with the 1st book. I've been reading about a month. I am not glued to it and just don't see the intrigue...

I haven't read the books but I don't get all the hype about them. My girlfriend gave me a Ann Rice series Sleepy Beauty many years ago which I think is similar in nature (erotic) and I couldn't get thru them, just had no interest.

I'm on the third book and it's just awful. Also, My vagina must be broken because I don't find anything sexy. H is waaaaaay too controlling for it to be hot.
I do however like the little sprinkle of storyline which is Christian's childhood. That is about it.

Re: Why do people like 50 shades of grey so much
I wasn't a fan of the first book and didn't see the appeal either. I'm now almost finished with the 3rd and I do like the series a little better after reading the subsequent 2 books.
I'll have to say - she's a terrible writer and the books are incredibly repetitive and the sex scenes almost become rote - but I think the appeal is Christian Grey himself. I think it's because it's a book that toes the line of erotica (but gets nowhere near what erotica is) enough to capture the imagination. I think it's provided inspiration for many.
I hate Anastasia (just her name alone reminds me of a porn star), but I do like Christian. On paper, we would all love a guy like that but in reality it wouldn't work because most of us would chafe at his controlling nature. But I think it's the fantasy of it. It's almost like the book is saying it's okay to fantasize about this stuff.

I agree - Christian's childhood and his storyline is the best part of this book!

I think it is the shock factor then you get over it. It becomes predictable. Take out "the scenes" and you have a a small story line and their communication is almost high schoolish. I will read the next two just because, see what Christians childhood was about, not becasue I am dieing to find out how it all turns out. Anastasia completely bores me.

Keep in mind it IS based off Twilight fan fiction. I don't think you can expect more in depth banter from them.

Re: Why do people like 50 shades of grey so much
I haven't read them, and don't plan on it. Everything I've heard about them, even from people who love them (including the author), makes me think I would hate them.
Nobody has said the writing is good. Even the author said the writing was bad.
I'm not a fan of erotic reading. Not the kind of thing I want to read on the train, which is where I do most of my reading. Maybe a short story before bed...but That's about it.
I think I would hate Christian. When I was younger, I might have liked it more. Now, from what I hear, he seems like a controlling, sex-obsessed, arrogant man. Not the type of guy I want in reality, or in my fantasies.

The characters are SO incredibly similar to Twilight's character too I feel just with sex.

Same. I read the whole series. They were a "fun" read only because I had a funny discussion going on thru PM on FB with a bunch of girls also reading. A few of them went to the EL James luncheon yesterday at Carlyle on the Green

Re: Why do people like 50 shades of grey so much
I started to read the first book and am so glad one of the ladies here suggested epubbud.com because I would have been really upset if I'd paid for the book.
I thought Twilight was badly written; this was AWFUL. It was like a 15 year old's diary. Though I read a lot and admit I'm a huge snob about books.

Re: Why do people like 50 shades of grey so much
I just downloaded the first book. A few of my co-workers were thrilled with it so I checked it out.
I'm finding the writing awful and I'm not drawn to it as much.
A guy I was sitting next to on the train peered over my shoulder and started talking to me about it. ewwwww...

Re: Why do people like 50 shades of grey so much
I read about the first 30 pages of the book. It is so horrible, I just couldn't bother going forward. I think it is some of the worst writing I have ever experienced. Complete suckage.

Re: Why do people like 50 shades of grey so much
The first book was just mehh but I kind of got into the story in the 2nd and 3rd.
They are pretty terribly written, but I liked the Christian character very much - not for the sex (which got to be super tired, creepy and laughable) but more for his backstory.

I think it's because a lot of people weren't aware that the whole genre of erotica fiction existed

If she was smart; she would write a prequel just about his childhood & adoption with Grace.

Re: Why do people like 50 shades of grey so much
Christian is CREEEEEEEPY. The books did nothing for me.
I did read all three bc I heard they got better. That was true, but just a little.
That being said, even though I didnt really like them, I like any book discussions, and even more, making fun of the stupid repetetive lines.

I dont like it. I think it is horribly written and I don't get the hype! Nothing more than those trashy drug store novels.

I kind of like the way this is twisted into the three books though. I think its light and fun (never mind the hot and exciting read). I think it takes a lot of ones imagination to make this reading fun and enjoyable. I like it, I like Christian's character and sometimes want to slap Anastasia lol. Its how you take in and interpret the story. I had fun with it and I would actually tease my husband... when he would say certain things I would say to him "Come on honey, talk to me like Christian Grey" lolll and he would look at me like I had three heads and then I told him the story line. He thought it was a cool story.

Re: Why do people like 50 shades of grey so much
I read Twilight, so I can't complain too much about the terrible writing..although this is worse. I hope she puts some of my $9.99 toward a thesaurus.
I am reading it and I'm enjoying that it's a quick read, and the sex scenes are ok. I don't really read erotica, but I know I can't stand her stupid self conscious butting it. Ruins anything I might have gotten out of it.
I also find Christian terrifying. I would have run from there screaming. Like he selfishly wants women to submit to him in every way. basically he wants to own her. Ugh. That's ok for one night roleplay but ugh. i don't know. I'm only 150ish pages into the first book, so I'm reserving final judgement
