I was looking forward to reading this because of all the hype...now not so sure!
Oh no - read it if you want. It's really a quick read and it is what you make of it. Just don't expect it to be completely and utterly mind-blowing and one of the best books ever written.
The real hook to the whole series is Christian Grey himself - he's an interesting character and his story is interesting and like another pp said I wish there was something devoted solely to him and his story.

There will be. She's writing "Shades of Christian". I think once you start to sink yourself into the 2nd book you get more wrapped up in the story. I really enjoyed the books. They're a mindless read and they're written TERRIBLY. The grammer and editing is absolutely atrocious but its entertaining enough. Perhaps I just enjoy smut

I really enjoyed all three books. I like to read for fun and to be transported away from my life for the time being and these books did that for me.

Re: Why do people like 50 shades of grey so much
if they're written anything like Twilight (which it sounds like they are), i can't imagine i'd enjoy it at all. I thought Twilight was the worst piece of crap ever written
The supposed fantasy/erotica aspect of it isn't enough to draw me in i guess. I have other erotica books if i'm in the mood for that sort of thing

Re: Why do people like 50 shades of grey so much
I have read them all and I liked them, they were good fun! lots of fun! Fun to talk about with friends, and fun to read.
Here's my take on it. I think that women love the books because they are every woman's fantasy, girl meets incredibly wealthy boy with dirty habit, and she changes him. And in my heart of hearts, I think lots of women want to meet a man and mold him into the perfect man...and thats what Ana Steele does with Christian Grey.
I belong to a book club and I have recomended this for our next read...I want to talk about the phenomenon just as much as the book, and its been ages since we have had a fun read...our last one was Charles Dickens!! Oy vey!

I agree - it's the fantasy of it.
I could never recommend this book to my Book Club even if for the purpose of having something fun to talk about. The last book I recommended that was even slightly raunchy was Gods Behaving Badly and some refuse to read it and said it was repulsive.

Re: Why do people like 50 shades of grey so much
Isn't all art subjective?
Some people like Picasso and others don't get it. Some people think Hemingway is brilliant and others think he's a misogynist hack. Some folks love Puccini while others say opera makes their ears bleed.
I didn't love the books. I didn't find them especially compelling.. but who am I to judge someone else for their tastes? I mean.. I like 80's pop!! LOL
I can say they were easy to read and the stories had some good bones. I don't personally feel that the characters were fleshed out enough and I never got to feel connected to any of them.. but I think that it was 'just enough' for a number of folks. The pacing was fast and when you are dealing with busy modern day folks, that timing is vital to keeping their interest. That's my take for whatever it's worth.

Re: Why do people like 50 shades of grey so much
The writing is positively juvenille and just plain bad. But I took the books for what it is: a popular piece of fun smut. I read all 3 books in just a couple of days and enjoyed it.
To me it's a guilty pleasure just like how any of us watch Jersey Shore or any of those Real Housewives shows. They provide no real substance but you just can't take your eyes away. That's how I feel about these books. Not to mention it did spice up things between DH and I after reading them.

Completely agree with the above! They are a mindless read and sometimes our crazy lives need a break and this was a very welcome break for me.

I read about the first 30 pages of the book. It is so horrible, I just couldn't bother going forward. I think it is some of the worst writing I have ever experienced. Complete suckage.

I think that ebooks and the fact that it has an ambiguous cover and title make it more accessibke to someone who wouldnt read a book called "Claudia's Raputre" with Fabio on the cover

I think I would hate Christian. When I was younger, I might have liked it more. Now, from what I hear, he seems like a controlling, sex-obsessed, arrogant man. Not the type of guy I want in reality, or in my fantasies.
This is how I feel, and this is why i'm having trouble enjoying the book on any level (i'm still on book 1). I just don't LIKE Christian. I want to punch him and tell him he's a d-bag. I'm certainly not turned on by him.

I am almost done with the 1st book. I've been reading about a month. I am not glued to it and just don't see the intrigue...
I complete agree! I tried to read it 3 times and can't seem to finish it.
I can't believe there's so much hype about this book. The writing is so atrocious and premise is hard to believe. A successful Type A guy like Christian would more likely turn out to be the submissive one, a complete reverse of what he is in the book.
And why would he make Anastasia sign the contract? She can easily turn it around and use it as proof to expose him for what a wacko he is...
As for Anastasia, everytime she says 'Oh my' I cringe and think of Sulu (George Takei's character from Star Trek) saying the same thing.

Exactly this! I cannot stand him I like to read books that I can somewhat relate to. I know this is pure fantasy. The man is a ga-billionaire yet never seems to be working. He's way to controling and I don't feel the chemistry between the two of them. He controls her and she finds him hot and sexy. There's nothing there. Everything I read I just go... "Really?! Come on!"

For me, the books were just a fun, fast, trashy read. And Christian just read so hot. Little weird and creepy at times? Sure!......... but still hot. It is not great, wonderfully written literature by any stretch of the imagination but it doesn't try to be. Take it for what it's worth, a fun read.

Re: Why do people like 50 shades of grey so much
Ok, i got hooked. I didn't care for the 1st one, but once i finished it, i went on to the 2nd. I had a hard time getting into the 1st one, but once i "got into it", it hooked me in. The second one, like it so much better, liked that there is more of a story/plot. You get to "know" Christian better which helped me understand what was going on in the 1st one. I am on the third one now. I have all three if anyone needs the download. Just let me know.
