Why do they plow in your driveway? Is it true if you stand outside, they won't block in your driveway?

I don't get it. I get they have to plow the side roads, but my entire driveway was plowed in about 4 feet deep of snow.

Can this not be helped?

eta: neither of us were home. If I had seen this go down, I would have asked them nicely to not block us in. It seems every other house on our block - their driveways are clear - and just our house and the house that is vacant and for sale on our street were blocked in.

Nope, can't be helped if you want the street plowed. Unless the road is a dead end, they have to plow it all to the sides

Im not sure they could help it unless they went and dug each driveway out.....way too much work.

Unless you want them to stop at every driveway and then pick up again, you gotta just deal. Or then there would be some super pisssed off plowers.

oh, ok. I wasn't sure if this is normal or not. In my parent's town, they keep the driveways free.

my parents live in Suffolk, and I guess were always lucky?

This is my first time having to experience this, so I wasn't sure. I've heard conflicting things.

One friend told me she always stands outside when they come to make sure they don't block her in. I know in NJ, they are trying to pass legislation to stop the plows from blocking in your driveway.

I'm trying to make a game plan for next snowstorm. I was very happy though with my street being plowed.

i live in a village in suffolk they plow your driveway shut. Its a wall of snow and I had to dig it out with a damn plastic shovel.

Nope. They plowed our driveway in as my dh was out there shoveling today.

In Nassau and Suffolk where I have lived, the driveways always get blocked. The only thing standing outside is good for is for slowing down the plows on the road. And no, I don't mean standing in the street. One year, in nassau, the plows would come flying down the street and literally launch the snow onto the sidewalk and even beyond that! The cars were getting slammed with ice chunks. They were a little more cautious if you were outside!

My MIL swears if you wait out side when they plow they won't cover your driveway. I don't know why they do this, I suspect they do it so you'll be more likely to hire someone to plow you out and cost you $$$. I'm not sure. But that would be the only I could come up with.

I always wish that our house was on the left side of the street instead of the right because they never plow the snow into the driveways on the left side. I don't know if this is just something in our area though but at our house and my parents' house the snow always just goes to the right.

Our plowers do a really good job, but even so, they plowed in our driveway while we were out there watching. They really don't have much choice.
