Re: Why do they plow in your driveway? Is it true if you stand outside, they won't block in your driveway?

I always wish that our house was on the left side of the street instead of the right because they never plow the snow into the driveways on the left side. I don't know if this is just something in our area though but at our house and my parents' house the snow always just goes to the right.
?? that's interesting, what do they do, plow all the snow on the left side to your side? LOL>
Make sure you put all your shoveled snow on the right side of your driveway so you for damage control.

It is all about the angle of the plow head. Most of the plows that go down narrow streets are angled right so that the snow is off of the road and not in the center (if it was angled left).

Sorry that makes no sense to me - if they lift the plow, that section of street doesn't get plowed. I'd much rather dig my driveway out. Where is the snow supposed to go? They aren't doing it on purpose.

Re: Why do they plow in your driveway? Is it true if you stand outside, they won't block in your driveway?
i'm not sure what else you'd expect the plow drivers to do.. if they had to raise their plow up before everyone's driveway (to not block the driveway), there would be no snow plowed off the streets, just giant clumps of snow infront of everyone's houses where the snow plow had left it.
Unfortunately, having your driveway plowed in is a necessary reality of what happens when they plow the streets. Not much we can do about it except to dig out
If the plows didn't plow the streets properly because they were more concerned about driveways, everyone would complain about that even more

ITA. then the road wouldn't be plowed in that section, eventually most of the street would still have snow in it
I think that maybe some streets (private ones) are not plowed by the towns, instead private companies hired by the homeowners assoc. or private villages,so they pay them to remove the snow at the bottom of the driveway for each home they plowed in, but its on a much smaller scale so they aren't going to fall behind like a town truck would if they had to do that extra work

Re: Why do they plow in your driveway? Is it true if you stand outside, they won't block in your driveway?
I wish there was a way to avoid this. unfortunately not. However last year when I was in Bklyn and was stuck digging out my bf's store the sanitation guys saw my us and lifted the plow. But, I think that is because they frequented his store (deli) and had a good relationship).
So we aren't digging our driveway out till we get plowed.

I think if they were to lift up the plow for your driveway it would make getting in and out of the driveway difficult The snow that is left in that strip of road in front of the driveway would be a lot. kwim.

I live on a two way street. So when he goes up one direction he pushes everything to the right (south side) then he returns to do the other side (driving in opposite direction still pushing snow to the right, which is now the north side of the street. So unless its one way I do not get it.

Re: Why do they plow in your driveway? Is it true if you stand outside, they won't block in your driveway?
The plows fly down our street and send the snow flying into the yard and driveways. You can't eliminate that but there are some things you can do to minimize it if you want to but it takes some extra work in shoveling before the plows come. We have a circular drive so I make sure I shovel the part of the parking apron on the approach side of the driveway, tossing that loose snow into the yard so that snow is not in the street waiting to get dumped into the yard by the plow. It's still shoveling but it's easier to shovel the new-fallen snow than it is to shovel the hard chunks created by the plow. You could also park in the street on the approach side of your driveway so the plow has to stay wide on the end of your driveway but then you have to shovel out the car. Bottom line is that there is snow in the street and they have to put it somewhere.

this is good advice...I will notebook this.
I really had no idea what to expect as far as my new town and how they plowed or what to expect, and what made it worse was I stuck at work all day and so was DH, so we didn't even get to tackle any shoveling at all. So when I pulled up, I had no idea what to do. I literally hauled my butt up over what seemed like 3.5' of snow uphill. My road was plowed nicely, though!

Standing out there makes no difference at all. The guys were out there shoveling yesterday and the plow dumped it right back into the driveway. They stood there with their mouths wide open. It's the nature of the beast though.

Re: Why do they plow in your driveway? Is it true if you stand outside, they won't block in your driveway?
Last year I was standing outside (not on purpose, but I just happened to be out there) and they angled the plow so that it pushed the snow onto the yard instead of into the driveway. So it can be done.

Re: Why do they plow in your driveway? Is it true if you stand outside, they won't block in your driveway?
A plow is 98% of the time angled right so snow is always pushed to the right side of the street. That is why on highways you will see tandum plowing.
The citys job is the clean the streets, not your own private driveway. A homeowners job is to keep the sidewalk in front of their home clean of snow & ice.
If you choose to shovel your driveway & dump all of the snow into the street like my neighbor did, chances are that when the plow comes down the block the snow is going to wind up back in your driveway.

My neighbor does this all the time and everytime that massive pile ends up right in front of his driveway. Apparently, he hasn't picked up on the fact if you throw it to the sides and lawns, the amount of snow that gets pushed in front of your driveway would be much less. Not to mention, you can get fined for throwing it into the street (not that I've ever seen that happen).

i know three contractors who say they will not plow for brookhaven because they have not been paid for the plow work for last two years, and will not plow till they are paid, they also said they know dozens of other guys that will not plow, ever wonder why the store parking lots are down to the blacktop but not the streets??

Hey man, better a late answer than never!
I have since realized since owning a home that you will always be plowed in and there's no way around it. I actually laughed at myself last night as I was shoveling out for ever thinking it was possible.
You live & learn!
