Re: Why do we live in a tipping society?
I don't mind tipping at a restaurant or when I get a delivery. I think tipping everytime I go to Starbucks or a take out place is ridiculous.

Re: Why do we live in a tipping society?
As a former waitress, I tip generously now (at least 20%) b/c I know how hard they work. At other places though, where they are making $7/hr and are teenagers, too, no.

Re: Why do we live in a tipping society?
I love not tipping, and I love that when I do tip someone, its because I want to...not because I have to. I can't say this is a fact, but I think that waiters/waitresses are paid even less in the UK then they are in the states...I know bar staff are paid a pittance (being a former bar maid myself)

Re: Why do we live in a tipping society?
I like tipping to show appreciation for good service
I hate when the tip is included and service was terrible
I hate feeling like everyone expects a tip to do their job but............ I do tip b/c I feel I have to or I will be treated poorly next time

Not to start this whole thing again but title closers usually make an appearance fee of $40-50. This is fine if the closing takes 30 minutes, but I have sat at closings for 3 hours, not been funded and had to go back the next day to finish up. Unless you are paying off more than one mortage you need the tips. Also as a buyer, the title closer is who pays off the old mortgage so it's probably worth 50-100 to ensure everything is done promptly ETA: I do not do this anymore specifically because of the unsure amount of income.
ok- they should be paid more- your DH is in the business and so in mine- does anyone tip him after he spends 4 months on a loan that doesn't close????
forget about sitting for a few hours- a loan officer can spend 100 hours on a loan that doesn't work out- that's the business and why I am pushing my DH to do something else!
Oh yeah I'm with ya. So is my SIL and best friend who both have DH's in the biz.

Re: Why do we live in a tipping society?
Where I live you don't tip anyone. There is no need to, b/c the minimun wage is $14 an hour. Waiters, waitresses and bartender make at least this.
In the US I only tip to people that dont get a full salary (waiters bartenders, etc) b/c an employer doesnt pay them enough, why should I have to pay the rest of that person's salary?

Re: Why do we live in a tipping society?
The only tipping I do not mind is in diners, if they give good service I tip well. Even if they don't give such great service and I notive it's extremely busy and the boss put one waitress to a very busy section, I still don't mind tipping well.

What?!? If you come pick it up do they put it in paper bags?
I tip when we go out to eat, that's it. I get a little annoyed at the tip jars at the ice cream places, etc. I mean, I don't tip McDonald's workers, so I would I tip someone for getting me ice cream? If someone makes that little money and they are depending on the tips that they aren't guaranteed, they should get a higher paying job (with the exception of a waitress since that's specifically a tipped position).
Like the Summer camp tipping thread. I don't tip the summer camp counselors and that was the first I had heard of that even being a job where they expected tips. Yeah they get paid min. wage, but daycare workers work really hard and don't make much more than that and they don't get tips
