why is calling a black person 'colored' negative?

I heard the Lohan bit...

Re: why is calling a black person 'colored' negative?

there are very few words in the language that are inherently bad.

it's more in their usage.

this word is one of those words. it was (and apparently still is) used in a negative way to describe black people.

it's really a misnomer anyway...white is a color too. we are all "colored" in some way.

It's an old term indicative of a certain time in history. I don't think it was used to be derogatory. If it is considered offensive, then they should change the name of the NAACP.

Good point.

Apparently - people are trying to make a big stink about Lohan calling Pres. Obama colored... I didn't think she meant anything bad by it.

They NAACP actually defended her use of the term, since they use it too.

My personal opinion, not to cause controversy, but I find this worse because it assumes that all black people are from Africa. What about people from the Carribean?

What about everyone just calling themselves what they actually are... AMERICAN. If you were born in America, you are american. Period. End. Simple.

Technically, we (meaning black people) all are from Africa. When they put the Africans on the boat, they just dropped some of us off in the Caribbean.

My parents were born in Haiti, so I consider myself Haitian-American. DH is African-American.

My horse trainer is South African. He actually does refer to himself sometimes as African American... (He's caucasian)

Re: why is calling a black person 'colored' negative?

I think it is offensive. When I hear someone use the word colored it makes me think that we are living in the South a couple of decades ago where segregation still exists.
I think Caribbeans are a lot more nationalists so when someone will ask me what I am- I say I am Dominican. If you ask someone from Jamica they will say Jamaican ect. DH's family is from the south so when you ask him he will say Black and White. I dont think I have ever really heard him say AA. I dont think Lohan meant the use of the word colored in a negative way but I think the term is definitely outdated.

I thought I was the only one who thought this also. That's why I just say black...the same way people say I'm white. I dont find either one derogatory.

The word "colored" I think is associated with a time where there was extreme racism. It is a term both my grandparents use b/c that is what black people were called during that time.

I don't think she meant any harm, but she sounds like an idiot. Maybe she said it to get herself in the news?
I've heard people say "a person of color" is that even more pc than "African American" or "black" ?

Well...I personally think they blowed this up big time. I do not believe Lohan is the brightest but I do know she didnt mean to use the word "colored" in a negative way. I think some people are more senstive than others. I discussed this with my African American friends, and they didnt see it as a big deal. In fact they didnt even know about it adn I had to be the one to tell them.
